And the sharpness of these blades (Pros or Supers) exceeds what I can get on my straight razors...that just means you have to be extra careful...which translates into learning great shaving technique. CHEERS!!!
These Feather shavettes are the real deal. After using other brands, I'm hooked on these. I get comfortable shaves with much less nicks (and most of those are caused by by 75 yr-old face).. Shaving with one of these is a real pleasure and produces an extraordinarily close shave.

The merkur futur brush works really well with the old spice mug. The brush is silver tip badger and small so you do not bang the sides of the mug. Makes me feel like an old timer when using the vintage old spice bottles and mugs. I got several of the milk glass bottles and mugs off eBay.
I have they same razor with teak wood handle. I commend you on your shave. You used the sharpest blade they offer and no weepers. I usually get a weeper or two with a knew blade the first couple of times I use it.
I’ve had a dovo shavette for a couple years, and I still only use it for the first pass with the grain. I cut myself against and across once and it humbled me. Every now and then I try but around the contours of my chin and lips, I just don’t.
I have the Feather DX aswell as cheap Chinese clones of the SS and the Kai Captain Zebrano, the SS and the Kai are similar for having the bulged lip on the shaving edge. I've found that the DX is much more comfortable for me while the other two require much more steep and unnatural angle for shaving and I feel like I'm not having very good control of the blade, perhaps because I have less visibility with the bulge at the end. I'm also new at the straight razor shaving (if you can call it that) so as a newbie the DX is still the better choice for me aswell as the much better looking one. If you are on a budget I'll recommend the standard Kai Captain which is not lipped and is almost identical to the DX but is half the price.
Thanks for the tip, I had taken the SS out of the running after learning about the bulged lip, and was debating between a $200 DX and $130 Kai captain pakkawood. The Kai captain came with a leather case and a pack of blades despite the lower price, and I'm glad to say I can't notice the lip whatsoever, I think it's basically identical to the DX.

But what is the difference between the feather shavette and a straight razor that you need to strobe everyday in terms of performance, easy of use, feel, making contact with the face, etc?
Hi mate I'm having a big problem with my shaves, I have quite corse and tough hair so when I shave the blade doesn't just cut through the hair like a knife through butter it's more like a knife through a brick :( there is alot of resistance when cutting. I use de razors
Try different blades, but more importantly make sure to soften the hairs before shaving. You can do that by showering or keeping a wet/moist towel to your face for 2-3 minutes.
@@geofatboy thanks for your replies, i have tried hot towls before with relative success, some times it just drys out my face and doesn't really soften my hair, I don't shave straight after shower as I have long hair so need to blowdry it. Tried my first shave with the Feather AC SS. I am not sure if I should tried it since I had a close shave with a conventional the day prior. I end up with a gash on my cheek and a couple of tiny cuts. Should I have used it when I had more hair growth? Now I am not sure if I want to try it again. What are your thoughts on this?
Shavette is a brand name owned by Dovo Merkur. It means instead of honing the edge you simply load new blades onto the razor. Shavettes tend to be more aggressive than straight razors because the blades are more rigid qnd industrially honed.
A shavette uses a replaceable blade. A traditional straight razor has a solid blade. shavenation.com/collections/shavette-razors shavenation.com/collections/straight-razors
Geo, what is the differences between the blades, I believe there were 4-5 different blades that I have to use with this specific razor? I am looking to get it but need some clarity.
Click on the blade pics here: shavenation.com/collections/feather-shavette-razors I just added a lot more detailing about the blades in the pictures in the listings.
Is using the Feather Artist Club SS razor just as easy as using a regular straight razor to shave oneself? I emailed Feather Company in Japan a while back. They said the Feather Artist Club SS razor was for professional barbers to shave others with.
In japan people pretty much just use cartridges or electrical shavers i hear. Itd be more unusual for people over there to use this but not unheard of... Pretty sure that's just corporate-speak. I hear some vintage DEs used to say that as well.
Is there any reason to go for the Feather Artist Club DX instead of the SS? www.feather.co.jp/en/bh_Products/professional.html The SS seems to be slightly milder than the DX. Also that the DX is more adjustable (whatever that means). Some have mentioned the KAI Captain as an good alternative to the Feather Artist Club. The Kai uses their own blades. I find Shavettes razors, is like buying a car from Ford, and you can only fill it with Ford gasoline. That is why I like DE Safety Razors, it will never be an issue getting blades that work.
I've bought a cheap shavette razor and I have been using feather DE blades with it. I find the corners on the DE blades to be a bit dangerous. Are the blades for this one rounded at the edges? Is it an order of magnitude better than your typical shavette? By the way, I'll be using it on my head. Managed the shavette with just 1 nick so I'm fairly confident.
Do you recommend the same shallow angle for the Feather Club DX? I watched one of your old videos where you appear to be using a DX and your angle in that is much more perpendicular.
Use your blade until youre no longer happy with the shave you get. Some people use a new blade every shave or two.. I know some people who use blades from 5 to 10 times each, depending on how regularly they shave and the thickness of their growth. I use a single edge shavette, similar to this video and i can use one blade for about 3-4 shaves to line up my beard and shave my neck and i also line up my hair line just as many times.
@@AllanDC97 DE Feathers are too sharp for me, they cut my beard well but they also scrape the top layer of my skin. With cartridge razors I have a similar problem with Gillettes and that's why Harry's worked best for me but the blade choice is a very personal thing, It depends what type of beard and skin you have and you can find the right one only by trial.
Geo I've been watching your vids for years from the UK. Sorry to see you've been demoted from the swish bathroom to what appears to be a dungeon. All you need is a couple of manacles hanging on the wall and Vincent Price holding your towel to complete the scene! Best wishes from England.

Thanks for the great video @geofatboy. While I don't want to start a Gorilla vs Shark kind of thing, I want to buy a feather Shavette and can't decide between the Japanese and Folding Style. I'm currently shaving with a Cambridge Cut Throat, but I end up shaving the neck area with a "japanese grip". Which feather razor do you personally like the most?
I used to shave with a straight razor. I'm a righty and I could never trust myself to switch hands. I developed a forehand-backhand technique that worked well for me. My first shave with a Feather Artist Club was at the Belmont Barbershop in Chicago. It's definitely a great shaver!

Shavette is a brand name owned by Dovo Merkur. It means instead of honing the edge you simply load new blades onto the razor. Shavettes tend to be more aggressive than straight razors because the blades are more rigid qnd industrially honed.
@@starlodear2987 ok thanks 😁
A shavette uses a replaceable blade. A traditional straight razor has a solid blade.

Can you use DE blades broken in half?
@geofatboy👍
Will you compare this SS to the Artist Club DX?
If you do, please talk about the gripping power of both razors. Thks
Can this give a closer shave than a merkur 37C?
Ny & Chicago accent are undefeated
Ha Ha! They go the full 15 rounds!
Can the muhle shaving soap be melted down to a bowl?
How many shaves can you get out of 1 blade? Should you remove the blade after you shave everytime??
How much more difficult is it to shave with a straight razor in comparison to a safety one??
Geo, what is the differences between the blades, I believe there were 4-5 different blades that I have to use with this specific razor? I am looking to get it but need some clarity.

I just added a lot more detailing about the blades in the pictures in the listings.
@@geofatboy I also found this video and it was VERY helpful: th-cam.com/video/XJFHsajC3MM/w-d-xo.html
4 months later but if you place the col conk puck in a apothecary mug and bloom it you get the same effect
You emphasized holding the blade fairly flat to the skin- do you feel it is very different on this razor as opposed to other shavettes, like Parker?
Those other shavettes are angled outward a bit more...
Is there any reason to go for the Feather Artist Club DX instead of the SS?
www.feather.co.jp/en/bh_Products/professional.html
The SS seems to be slightly milder than the DX.
Yes, they are rounded
Do you recommend the same shallow angle for the Feather Club DX? I watched one of your old videos where you appear to be using a DX and your angle in that is much more perpendicular.
Sir do i need to change my blade of safety razor after each and every use for smooth shaving?
no, each blade will last for 4-6 shaves
For me its 3 shaves before I need to change the personna platinum blades i use
@@os8544-k6z I use feather blades myself, they work well for my sensitive skin, with a gentle touch of course.
Lets we all take a trip to Italy, and get a gangster shave like in the movies

Geo I've been watching your vids for years from the UK. Sorry to see you've been demoted from the swish bathroom to what appears to be a dungeon. All you need is a couple of manacles hanging on the wall and Vincent Price holding your towel to complete the scene! Best wishes from England.
Ha Ha! You got me! I love it though... You know if I still had my (swish) McMansion I'd be in there making some Grade A videos. But you deal with the hand dealt you. So I'm pumping out more videos and now concentrate on the sound quality and content even if the back drop isn't totally appealing to the eye. My views and subs keep increasing steadily so I thing it's a winning formula. That being said-If someone wants to contribute a cool million$$ ShaveNationDonation or a spectacularly adorned bathroom laden house you can bet my ass will be in there doing that thing that I love the most about this whole business (making videos) Have a Great Shave, Have a Great Day!
geofatboy I'll get the manacles off to you today!
Sounds like you already prefer the Japanese grip, that might be the way to go.
I used to shave with a straight razor. I'm a righty and I could never trust myself to switch hands. I developed a forehand-backhand technique that worked well for me. My first shave with a Feather Artist Club was at the Belmont Barbershop in Chicago. It's definitely a great shaver!
