It’s all about creating connections and showing people they’re not alone. When individuals realize they’re part of something bigger and have support across the organization, their comfort zone expands, and they take more risks.
This is how we handled brainstorming sessions when I worked in a much larger Art Department at a well-known corporation. We had designers who had been there for 15-20 years and they were SOME of the ones that were the worst at shooting down ideas in the brainstorming session with the classic phrases, "We've tried that and it didn't work", to which I would respond "But we didn't have the same team members that we have now" and the second common thing said was "That will never work" to which some of us would say "Who cares get it written down on the board!"...
Love this - I do this on a smaller scale as a design teacher for middle school. It is soo applicable everywhere! I give kids a time limit and some parameters and at the end of the 'sessions' they are in awe of what they come up with! and then with 'all their ideas' they then narrow it down and begin developing/iterating it to fit the brief!
Earlier in my career, I was dong some weekend work where support would be difficult to obtain and we had an urgent problem at the time, a manager, not my manager but a manager, collected the small crew that was on shift and told us, "I want to hear a solution in 15 minutes, I don't care how stupid you think your idea is." That's stuck with me since, there are no bad ideas in brainstorming.
Ideas come when you have some level exposure and direction. Most people in middle management work in silos and generating ideas is really hard for them.
at a buffet, i personally sneak corndogs into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 corndogs in my jacket pockets. it then, is a joy for me to see other patrons of the establishment eat my corndogs thinking they were part of the buffet.
Why do you not let senior leaders participate in idea generation? They are more involved with the vision of the company... wouldn't they have better insights as to how the company would grow?
If those people have ideas in that level of the company, they should already be implementing them. Plus, more junior team members may not be as free with their ideation if they’re worried about suggesting things that may not align with their boss sitting next to them. Just my 2c
A lot of buzzwords here and there yet again. Yeah guys, did you get it now, are you ready to be a true leader after this motivational talk? I will not even spend time to know this guy better, I may be wrong but my guts tell me he is another marketing rep.
He's arguably one of the most incredibly insightful thought leaders on leadership of our time. He's been active for nearly 15 years. He has 3 best selling books on leadership and corporate culture. He held the record for the most watched TED talk of all time for nearly a decade. Have you seriously never heard of him?
One of the most concise demonstrations of what good leadership actually is
Yes- a great leader opens the connections and minds of others - feels good to be heard!

As an ideas person, I must admit I am a terrible executer. Simon has so much wisdom.
The magic often shows up as one element of a 'bad idea'. 💥
