The Craig Charles monologue at the start has to be the most confusing thing ever. The Roundheads (Or Parlimentarians) were Cromwells "side". And the New Model Army was comprised almost completely of trained professionals and is largely considered to be the first contemporary military, not farmers.
The whole drum archetype is weak. I haven’t seen one I like so far (though I didn’t keep up with Robot Wars back in the day, I’m bingeing from the start). They all have such a slow weapon which probably couldn’t leave an imprint in wet concrete, and, by the nature of how they work, they come up short because the robot has to accelerate away from the target. They can’t just put a longer pole on the axe, because that would require more torque to swing. Of all the common archetypes, the drum seems like the worst.
@@NoobixCube Atilla the Drum and Stinger are about the only 2 good drum robots or robots in the same sort of style that were actually any good. They just don't seem to be a good design unless you either have a very powerful weapon on the end of the arm or have some sort of internal motor that can move the arm separate to the wheel, like it was an axe or something.
@@djulianerenbourgh4969 Yeah, it seems like if you have a well made robot with at least decent shock absorption then robots like Stinger will have a hard time dealing with them. Usually the problem with those sorts of robots is how to actually defeat them. Since they usually use minimal components or a rounded shape, it's hard to meaningfully flip or pierce them. In Extreme, Behemoth had a good idea by using the scoop and axe to lift and pin Stinger in place, but especially flippers like Chaos 2 have to just... throw them about enough to have the judges decision go their way.
There are loads of outtakes somewhere with the controller driving Killalot intothe pit by accident. He did have a habit of bursting into flame in the earlier seasons though, mainly thanks to it having a petrol motor.
Something really funny about this episode: The Triterabot vs Evil Weevil fight was suspended partway through, the reason? The smoke was so bad they evacuated.

Tbh the most impressive looking robot there is Panzer, with the tracks. Those rubber tracks will have a lot of grip on the arena floor, while grinder could be a good weapon for it but they never used it for whatever reason. Undertaker could also have been a good robot, but sad they never refined it. That first fight of Flip Flop Fly should've gone to Wild Willy, but I don't really think it would've mattered in the long run who went through. I do love their pre-match talk with Phillipa before fighting Evil Weevil! The highlight of this heat has to be Killalot being set on fire by Bash!

IIRC a motor burned out right at the start of the heat final. It was driving fine when they tested it, the final startedand it burned out as soon as they tried to movie it (you see smoke coming out during the match too).
The house robots repeatedly interfering with the contests/battles, along with damage they did to various robots, sucked. Their participation should have been limited, along with any damage allowed.
its actually a sad story, Production in series 3 was awful people were herded around and someone got a spike through their leg but the Undertaker team were rushed so much they actually never turned the robot on and were not told anything beforehand I think its the main reason behind robots being driven into the arena next series.

For me this heat is just weak but the only highlight of it was Atlas getting decapitated by Shunt and Killalot being torched by Sgt Bash in the Pinball XD
Good gods, why do people keep taking on RW with designs like Flip-Flop-Fly? Those things have an asinine weapon that depends all on good driving and velocity, and the damn mistakes always seem to lack both of those. Just make a stable 3 or 4-wheeled car and put some controllable weaponry on it so you don't have to spazz around looking like a deranged Hoverboard with PMS.
As so often, a house bot (namely Matilda) jumped the gun and was completely out of order attacking Wild Willy while it was still trying to drive itself off the pit. It probably wouldn't have made it but we'll never know now.

Which is at least partially why I never cared that they did it. Matilda completely WRECKING Thor all on her own, outside the cpz, twice in the old series, and twice more in the reboot... is one of my very favorite things to ever happen on Robot Wars. The house robots make the show a step above what Battlebots was at the time, so if I had to trade watching Matilda or Killalot accidentally or intentionally decimate some guys bot that would otherwise just kill itself or harmlessly plink away at the enemy, just to have some peoples crap robots do better, I'll take having them in the arena, every time. Because as I said, it's not really a trade at all. We can all have our own opinions.. so don't get your panties in a wad.

I feel that the Evil Weevil team seem to lack experience which is why I felt they were quite shaky in their fights. As for Panzer, they were very unlucky that their machine did not start where it really needed which costed them the fight.
This really shows how much these competitions and even robotics in general have come. Even some of the least successful bots in recent seasons sport more maneuverability and better weapons than almost all of these . Imagine Minotaur or Bronco or Tombstone against these.

I can't help but feel the first fight is BS. The one robot was practically immobilized but for some death-bed level twitching for a while. The second robot gets specifically ganged up on by both house robots and knocked into the pit. The house robots leave the first robot alone. The win is given to the first robot - the one that's been immobile. This bugs me a bit.
ya that was fucked up the house robots pushed him in the pit he should of won that war, but because of the house bots cause him to loose that was bullshit.. flip flop fly couldn't hurt a fly with that axe.
Was there a time limit to when you could use weapons then? Challenger 2 NEVER used the weapon and it may have had a chance to shred one of panzer's tracks.
Flamethrowers in these never seem to do anything. 8:58 Why didn't they back up? Why doesn't Challenger 2 use the spinning drum? Why didn't the match instantly end when Challenger 2 went into the pit? It went on for a while after that. And the Panzer team made a mistake by not equipping that saw they brought with them. They said they'd put it on for their final round, but they didn't, so I wonder why that was. Putting a spike on a side of a robot and then ramming it into another robot never penetrates.
reversalmushroom trust me... they do more then you think... comning form someone whos taken a blast from one, any sort of lipo battery or even Nickel Metal Hydride battery can either explode ore burst, also it isnt good on your PCB boards.... also spikes arent to powerfull till the last round... then they can literally poke holes in your base or chassie... also they can pop tires

They also had to evacuate the studio until the smoke cleared. Then they continued the fight where they left off once it was safe to do so. Editing obviously cut that bit out.
This Philipa is what gave me a lifelong attraction to blondes, ponytails, sleeveless shirts, and bellybuttons. Thank you, Robot Wars.
