- For Zelda month I thought I'd tackle and an obscure but internet-favorite BAD Zelda game: Zelda Wand of Gamelon. Yup, the one from all the memes and TH-cam poops. Let's see just how bad it gets.

Nintendo for some reason licensed out Zelda to Phillips CDI, and these Zelda CDI games are something...special. What is really strange is that A Link to the Past came out BEFORE Zelda Wand of Gamelon. These games felt noting like a Zelda game at all, but left their mark on the world once the internet got a hold of it. Let's see what all the fuss is about in my Zelda Wand of Gamelon review!

@@asgth6147 That really shouldn’t have posed much of a problem. I mean, couldn’t he just pick & choose from the recommendations he received? Or do it automatically via an inbox filter; e.g. _exclude(inbody:”destroy”)_ or whatever the hell the proper syntax is?
Not being in Hyrule is a weird complaint, given the existance of Koholint Island, Termina, the Great Sea, Labrynna, and Holodrum.

There's an explanation to them, so it gets a pass.
Koholint doesn't even exist, the Great Sea is Hyrule, and Termina may or may not exist but even if it does, it contains mirror images of Hyrule citizens and they are Hylian. Labrynna, and Holodrum can be physically visited from Hyrule (Zelda and Impa do so) and also have Hylian citizens as well as Gorons and Zoras.
Okay, let me rephrase:
Not being in (specifically) Hyrule is a weird complaint. It's not like this was the only time a Zelda game didn't take place in (specifically) Hyrule.
@@MissFuzzbottom When these games were made, it was the only time. Link's Awakening came out at roughly the same time so couldn't be counted on for history during Wands' development. (Plus Link almost gets Truman Show'd trying to leave Hyrule on a boat and arguably never even leaves Hyrule in that game)

Jirad, I love you but I don’t think you did your research on this one. Nintendo was legally obliged into this after the Nintendo Phillips console didn’t work out. Legally, Philips had the rights to Nintendo’s IP and the rest is history

They had the Zelda IP, but no budget and what is likely the smallest staff to ever be assigned to a Zelda game, let alone 3 Zelda games! I’m also fairly certain that most had never worked a game yet at all at this point in their careers. Add to the mix that there was a deadline that was approaching fast. Put it all together, and here’s 33.333% of the result!
Suppose this explains why Nintendo is suuuuper protective of their IPs now?
Kelsey C this and the disaster that was the Super Mario’s Bros. movie. They became FAR more protective after that due to them having ZERO creative control thru the entire production.
I was gonna say, 'Nintendo agreed to let Phillips use their IP' is a funny way to say 'Nintendo was sued into submission, kicking and screaming'.
When I was a kid I used to watch an informercial for the Phillips CD-I where a guy in a dark room talked to a wall of Televisions called "The great wall" that sold him on the CDI. This was one of the games they showed off for it. I remember wanting a CDI so badly, and my parents wouldn't get it for me.
I suppose I should thank them for sparing me the horror.
Still they should rerelease the zelda games and Hotel Mario on virtual console, for ocmpletionist purporses.

MY friend had these. You really don't want this, besides its true experience requires OG hardware + any shit-tier pack-in controller. TH-cam has accurately preserved these monuments to corporate cash-ins on lawfully owned licenses, quality be damned here.

Not really, Nintendo thought that Animation magic was making a show based on Zelda. However, once Animation Magic had the IP, they instead made their own Zelda games, without Nintendo's permission.
@@thundersheild926 Fun fact: I thought these were indeed cartoons, having just watched the TH-cam Poops. Until I saw a list with the worst Zelda bosses ever.
Considering they had a budget of 600k, no support from Nintendo, and had to program these games on a severely dysfunctional system I think these guys did a pretty decent job.

Of course, every game he has made since then was to overcompensate for these games' existence... but they were *_so_* dreadfully horrible, and MULTIPLE(!), that it _just_ wasn't enough. So, Miyamoto keeps trying to this very day - with each succeeding project superior to the last. Persistent soul...
Each time I feel bad for my drawings... I just look a couple of this terrifying cutscenes and think to myself "Man my art should be at a museum."

My dad got a Philips CD-i from the store he worked at when I was a kid and unfortunately this was my first experience with Zelda, because of that it took me until I was like 15 before I played a real Zelda game a Link to the past to realise what I had been missing.

'Donate it' should be downgraded to 'Destroy it' for games like this.
It was actually "Burn It" before, but people compared it to book burning, so he scrapped it. He explains this in his "Sneak King" review on New Game+

I thought it was common knowledge that Nintendo legally couldn't interfere with the production of these games after the deal with Phillips fell through, since they were the ones who cancelled it but had already shared the license, but Jirard seems to believe that Nintendo okayed them but then just didn't bother to oversee their production.
Yeah, every time he makes the comment on how it is "technically" a follow up to A Link to the Past and then comments on how much of a step backwards it is I cringe.
Its also literally on the Wikipedia page. Nintendo done goofed by giving out the licenses in the first place but they couldn't interfere with the games themselves.
Donate it? Giving this game as a gift to somebody should be done only if you hate their guts!

In some cultures it's a sign of declaration of war.
You know, oddly enough? Wand of Gamelon feels familiar. The painterly backgrounds, the travel to another kingdom... it looks like they decided to make a King's Quest game, but a platformer. And then at the last minute, they couldn't get the King's Quest license and got Zelda instead. Even the animation is reminiscent of King's Quest VII: The Princeless Bride (although KQ7 at least had characters interacting with the backgrounds).
Just remember when they were released they were hailed as marvels of technology, and the cut-scenes were breath taking

So its seems there is some missing info in here. Nintendo did not wriie off on these games. The rights to produce multiple zelda and mario titles where included in the orginal contracts between nintendo and philips. When The whole thing fell through philips still had these rights to make these select few of titles. Nintendo had 0 influence on them or input and where essentialy made behind there backs. Thats why ther is no nintendo flair or anything.
He's usually so thorough with white paper research, the notorious history of the CD-I games is all but clearly spelled out and comprehensive.
But still a good episode.

It's really weird that he called it a weird Nintendo experiment and a follow-up to LttP. And I'm surprised he hadn't heard of the CD-I before now. These games are such big memes... and the CD-I issue was what lead to Sony's rise.

Fun Fact: Both Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon AND Link: The Faces of Evil have been "remastered" and ported to pc by one of the creators of TH-cam Poop (I have no proof of it, but someone on youtube mentioned it on the trailer I believe). The remastered mode in the options make a few changes that make these games playable. NOT GOOD, but playable. Some of these changes include:
1: 60 FPS and a slightly faster movement, making moving the characters and the platforming better.
2: You automatically pick up all items like rupees just by passing over them, no more stabbing them one at a time (you still stab plot critical items and npcs)
3: No retry limits on death anymore, meaning no returning to the map unless you want to.
4: Once the game is loaded up, there are no loading times at all, all cutscenes and transitions are instant.
5: You don't need to duck to open the menu, if you aren't in front of a door, you open the menu, standing or jumping or whenever.
6: Autosaves are a thing now.
7: Beating the game unlocks a hero mode difficulty, enemies deal double damage, and the canteen can't be used, but beating this mode unlocks:
8: King Harkinian is a playable character, and he just ditches the sword and punches and kicks the crap out of everything.
9: For people who find the rupee colors bothersome, the remaster mode also changes the colors to match the series defaults.
The games are still terrible, but at least they are playable and when I beat them in 90 minutes each on my first try, I actually kind of enjoyed it since I wasn't fighting the controls.
oof can't believe you had to slog through this you are the true hero of hyrule and congrats my dude on a million I always knew you could do it, it took years but it is nice to finally see you get your due because unlike most youtubers you absolutely deserve it

This video has been recommended for me by youtube for a long time and the thumbnail always cracks me up
The way the game is described as well as the visual of the travel map, reminds me of those rugs in kids rooms that have like a town layout but none of it is, well fun and kinda boring.

Funny that you mention the Zelda cartoon at the end, because, when you play Link: The Faces of Evil (which doesn't even have "Zelda" in the title), it's clear that that was one of the inspirations for these games (why Link wants a kiss from Zelda in that game's intro and ending, why the Triforce is a solid pyramid, and maybe one or two more answers).

Yakuza 0 is great starting point for anyone interested to get into the series and the series it self is often underrated but those who have played understand why it has a strong fan base and why it has made so many games. Yakuza 0 it self I will admit is has a bit a rough start but you will get engaged quicker than you think. The story is so good I don’t want to spoil it’s very unique and super interesting. The characters are so likeable and believable in their motives and with so many awesome moments that you cheer them on. The combat is so much fun it easily puts the game on the list of best beat em ups of all time, with so many different fighting styles and it’s a ton of fun to play with each of them but it does take some strategy with certain enemies. There are so many fun, funny and bizarre mini games in the game which can get your blood pumping and make you laugh so hard you might lose your voice. There are a ton of side missions about over a hundred of them and a lot of them have such fun stories to them and there are a couple that are super memorable. The boss battles are so freakening awesome not only they can be tough but they make the bosses into badasses. The collectibles feel so good to collect and they will unlock stuff for you and I keep my mouth shut on what. There is so much to complete that it’s overwhelming how much stuff they put into the game and can be too much for some people with its high difficulty levels and how much content in it completing would take too long for any minor completionist and only those with the strongest of determinations and wills should fully complete this game but doing so you truly earn the title of a completionist.

@@TheMetalHeadbangger He's gonna eventually complete it. He still has to do his persona 5 playthrough. But I think he's just tired of people asking him like they asked him for Tales of Symphonia. Honestly though to complete yakuza 0 isn't so bad. The only part he'd be angry about is the RC racing. SOOOO all I gotta say is there is a chance. Just atm not right now.
@@NightSparrow107 I don't think the pocket circuit was all too difficult personally. The "hardest" part was getting the RNG to get the godspeed motor mk2 from the dream machines, but overall, I wouldn't consider pocket circuit to be that difficult.

Interesting fact, Gamelon was the enemy planet in the 1970s Anime Space Battleship Yamato's English version called Star Blazers.
Recently watched the series on my old DVD collection and when I heard of the enemy race of Gamelons, I instantly thought of the CDi Zelda games.

I think the worst thing about the CDI games is that they're the only ones to feature Zelda as the main playable character. She deserves so much better; even a spin-off on portable would be better than this.

Have to disagree with Jirard about the music. The game is awful and the soundtrack definitely clashes with the theme, but on their own, the songs are pretty catchy.

I feel like the cutscenes could have been nice and a great idea if done right, imagine 90s animation in a link to the past where when you are in imporntant moments like when sahasrahla dies you get a cutscene that would be amazing
Funny that you should mention the CDi, I first heard of the system when I was reading GamesTM and Retro Gamer back in 2003 and a few years later in 2006, TH-cam started and those Zelda CDi TH-cam Poops started and then fun continued from there.
