Jan Peerce & Leonard Warren - Invano Alvaro (1946)

  • Warren and Peerce sing the famous 'Invano Alvaro...Le minacce i fieri accenti' duet from Forza.
    Again, Peerce is not the ideal voice for this role in the house, but he sings an amazing Alvaro here in studio. Warren takes the high Ab at the end (of course).
    Both singers are in their respective primes; this is really a spectacular recording.
    27 December 1946 is the date.
    With the Victor Orchestra, conducted by Jean Paul Morel.

    In terms of vocal technique, these two are at the pinnacle. They may not always be first class interpreters however they are really 'going at it' in this duet.

    I cut my teeth on this great duet some 41 years ago, with the Domingo/Milnes version circa 1971.
    I still admire that rendition by those two young guys (Domingo was 29 or 30, Milnes about 35). But having since heard many others ... I like this one, but believe Warren was just entering his prime here.
    Peerce's voice wasn't nearly as huge as Warren's. But during his prime, as here, it had a dramatic timbre, with great ring and thrust, buttressed by Peerce's fervent delivery.

    Fantastic; didn't even know they recorded this. I think in 1953 or around then they along with Milanov recorded an excerpts LP of this opera and unfortunately this duet wasn't recorded; "Solenne.." was. What a treat to find something you didn't know existed with your two favorite singers of all time!

    Although I am not aware that Peerce ever sang this this rôle, I am amazed at the authority and feeling with which he meets Warren, who is singing one of his most celebrated parts. Peerce's rhythm and Italian enunciation both are stronger than Warren's whose lower register sounds rather tentative in the first part of the duet. I would love to hear their 1955 version, with Cellini conducting.

      Peerce sung Forza 4 times at the Met to a very good review. Forza was a little out of his repertory, but he did very well in the opera.

      Peerce sang it but not often, around five times at the Met. of course not in his early years, and also in the early 1960's he sang the role a few times in Holland, but he was known as a basically "Lyric tenor" as was Jussi Bjoerling (I saw them both the first time in 1958 in Chicago when I was 18 years old) Peerce left a lasting impression on me and many years later in Calif. when I worked in radio we became friends. Peerce had very good low notes and lots of "resonance" but on some studio RCA records he sounds for some people a little nasal , I assure you that hardly was the case in the house, where it was a more open sound, and it was a mid sized voice. His voice somewhat larger then Bjoerling's voice, but not spinto Corelli, or Tucker large. I saw him many times singing in both opera, concerts and in the Jewish Temple as a Cantor (He was a Religious Jew) He was a master of Jewish folk music and sang as a guest Cantor often. I knew him very well, and was a guest at his house, in New Rochelle NY. over one weekend, and I drove him to some of the concerts he gave, when he sang when in Calif. Once he sang some of his famous "blue bird song" for me for me in my car. but he sang in a piano soft voice! A real treat, I do still remember it well even now, in my 80's! @@edwardkerrigan5356

      He did not sing it many times, live it wasn't of course really a great role for him, but well sung as he always was. I have it complete from Holland in the 1960's. @@sugarbist

    Peerce is not associated with this role but he does it justice on all counts.

    • @shicoff1398
      @shicoff1398 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right, Peerce sang it in 1961 in the old Met. house and with good reviews, even if far from his best role, but here in 1955 in recording at age 51 he was able as basically a Lyric tenor to sing it with enough Heft to get a good review. These voice labels are not in stone. Listen to Peerce low notes. Warren is a sensation! For me, sensational.

    Peerce was always strong on top F to B and as you say fervent. Peerce was both strong and sweet at the same time. Other tenors tend to sing either strong or sweet. I never heard him sing a D flat or above. Kraus had marvelous D's and even E flat, but his tone was not particularly beautiful.

    • @sugarbist
      @sugarbist 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kraus was a great leggero tenor with a very light repertoire, and the ability to hit high Cs and D-fLATS. He sang Romeo, Lucia, Don Pasquale, Don Giovanni, Hoffmann, L' Esire, Faust, Daughter, Manon M. Traviata Werther and Rigoletto. Peerce being a lyric or perhaps a lyric spinto had a heavier voice and some of his repertoire was heavier than Kraus, with the inclusion of Tosca, Cavalleria, Forza, butterfly and Ballo. These are operas that Kraus had to avoid because of suitability. Kraus sang Boheme just once and did not do well.

      Warren aveva una voce eccezionale sia per estensione che per volume. I soliti pseudo critici prezzolati ( vedi Celletti and company ) cercavano di sminuire la sua classe eccelsa con critiche poco credibili.

    I like Peerce; I've never really liked Warren. To me Warren always sounds sluggish, and as if he's trying to sing with mashed potatoes or oatmeal in his mouth. The character of his voice just doesn't appeal to me very much.
