As a person who has worked in a foundry making castings, and who has worked in the waste water industry, (now drinking water) this video was beautifully done! Watching you hold a manhole brought back memories when I dropped one on my foot. Thank goodness for steel toed boots.

Because they looks great :) they're usually special commemorative manhole Covers for special areas. Also, a growing number of people are traveling to see these local covers and it is a nice attraction for locals and tourists. Local pride :)

Really enjoyed this one. Loved seeing the process of how they were made and it's cool that you were able to film the variety of manholes throughout your travels around Japan. Great topic and presentation!

Esp when u r using a huge desktop screen, u can view the video in full screen which gives u a totally different experience, i can totally feel the vibe and the atmosphere of a busy street in japan without having to travel all the way there! It is an amazing experience!

I've noticed a move to more official street art where I live in the last five years or so. We haven't got to making pretty manholes, but little power boxes on street edges are painted to different themes by various artists, and public spaces are being developed with art and nature integrated. As the world gets busier and life gets ever more stressful, there's something to be said for making our everyday surrounds pleasing to the eye. Little joys make life worth living.

Miss Communication Oh yes! My city has also started painting their power boxes as well, along with a bunch of trash containers. What's so great about them is that ever since they've been painted, they've received a lot less tagging. Guess people really like them a lot!

Japan becomes increasingly fascinating the more I watch these videos. They have some therapeutic influence to me. Anytime I have a stressful or uneventful day, I just tune in to "Only in Japan" and the "Life where I'm from" videos and I feel like I have gone on a mini adventure.
My goal now is to learn Japanese, travel to Japan, eat authentic Japanese food, visit attraction and events and meet a Japanese girl and perhaps live there for the remainder of my existence.......I've got to stop daydreaming in front of my computer at work, nothing gets done...gonna get in trouble....curse you therapeutic videos!!!.......LOL!!!

No matter how modern Japan is, it never forgets its culture. A manhole thing may be simple from the rest of the world but in Japan they are giving them a high value.

Let me just say that I found this channel by coincidence (probably because I like Japanese culture and had looked at related videos before) a few years ago. And I have to date not found a video you've made that hasn't been entertaining in some way, shape or form. Of course there are some I like more than others, but even those I like the least, I still enjoy, while also knowing that someone else might find those as their favorites :)
I just felt like I should leave you a message, since you have given me so much entertainment, education and insight for free for a long time. So thank you very much and know that I really, deeply appreciate the work you put into every upload.

This is one of my favourite episodes, I come back and rewatch it sometimes. If I lived in japan, or even just visited, I would be a manhole-er! It’s such a cool niche interest, I never ever thought man holes would pique my interest, but I’ve found that through a lot of your videos, I’ve learned to appreciate and love things I wouldn’t even think twice about. I adore that you’re shining light upon things like this, so keep up the great work, John, and thank you as always!

OMG!!! I loved ❤️this episode! When we traveled to Japan (Tokyo) in 2014 I noticed the covers and took pictures of the different ones and my family thought I was crazy 😜 I took more pictures in 2018 when we traveled to the Kansai (I have the Osaka castle one that’s on this episode) area! Now I want to go back to Japan and get those cards, and take more pictures! Mahalo!❤️🤙🏼😁

Extremely impressed by this video. Surprised that something that I didn't think would be that interesting ended up being one of my favorite videos of yours. Also I laughed out loud at "drainspotting" tag.
