    I took The Chief from Chicago to LA in August 2016, it was fantastic! I enjoyed every minute of it. I had a roomette which was very comfortable and the attendant was very good. I actually started the trip from Miami, then to DC. The same day I took the Cardinal to Chicago and then to The Chief. It's great to see the country and meet people and enjoy the journey.

    Wow, as I walked through train with you, I could smell each car! It's amazing how that information was burned into my brain by working on the train in the 80's.

    I'm getting ready to take Amtrak. I'm looking forward to traveling by train vs plane. Something different plus, you get to experience the views you don't get at 40k feet.

    4:34 that pinkish looking building (Harlem Ave & Windsor Ave) is an AWESOME Chinese restaurant. My dad used to take my sister and I there all the time as little girls. It's family owned and the people there are very friendly. Totally recommed! Just saying lol I got excited seeing a place that brings me such good memories. Also, great video thanks for posting!

    Lucky you, I had to ride coach when I took the Chief from Chicago to Albuquerque, New Mexico. I wasn't the one who made the reservation anyway, my Nephews then wife, (she has since passed away) made it for me. I had just gotten out of The Hospital after having a major Asthma attack. God Bless You.

    This was very interesting. I think many people have never been on a train. I used to jump on trains all the time when I was younger. I ran on top of box cars, jumped from one to another like a crazy person. Then I jumped on the side of a boxcar a few times and rode it for some time. I saw a train once stopped with a caboose and just walked in it. There was a bed in it, painted light blue inside and a sink with running water. Later I rode a train the proper way here in Kentucky and went on a short ride, seeing the car in front of me rocking back and fourth, not like this ride where it was so smooth. I love trains :) good job filming!

      Peter Grun
      I love when people who have no idea what they're even talking about start spouting like a 12 year old bully in school. It's very entertaining.
      I think a nation that engulfs Europe landmass wise and has half a dozen different climates and 3 major mountain ranges is more than well worth seeing. Especially via the world's largest singular rail system.

    Germany is a really paradise of different types of trains :)
    We have different types of RB = Regionalbahn, RE = Regionalexpress, my favourite is the S-Bahn, subways very cool in Berlin and Hamburg and munich for example, Stadbahn, Straßenbahnen, the national express which was imported from Great Britain :) and long distance trains and others types of trains which i dont know at this time.
    In my country germany we have one of the most good rail network system of the world, i would say in my experience the best of all countries, but Japan and southkorea have a good rail network system too, but do not underestimate China !!.

      It's a very very very long boring ride. And when the trains come into most towns, you just see the backs of warehouses and the bad part of town. The Surfliner from San Diego to LA is a nice 3 hour ride, but cross country trips are brutal.

    • @animes4ever264
      @animes4ever264 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      David Jardine yeah it is really sad that the most of the persons today watching at their smartphones but believe me, that is not only a specifically problem in USA also in my country germany the most of the persons stare at their smartphones.
      Sometimes i think, " if i am not normal or the others?"
      In my opinion it is really exciting to ride with a train and watching what happens outside, because i love trains and i am glad that i often can ride with different types of trains to my university and not only always to drive with a boring bus :(
      There are many persons who are really sick in their head today and sometimes i would like to take their smartphones and throw it in a volcano or in the pacific oceans where they will never see it again

      I love looking out the window in trains, planes, etc. I also don't stare out the window the whole time. Beautiful as it may be, it's often the same for hours on end. So yes, I look on my phone. People read, look at newspapers, eat food, chat about frivilous things, and nobody dismisses those things as them ignoring the world around them. As much as we've become addicted to our smart phones, we also seem to have become addicted to considering ourselves superior for judging others for using them- without having any idea of the context.

This USA-train-video is the first of its kind I enjoyed & now dreaming to travel by one of those. Do they serve vegetarian food? How much it cost travelling from Los Angeles to Chicago! We'd to see the back of the lady for long, otherwise it's a lovely video. Thanks.

    Had a friend take this train in November (2017), he and his wife elected to take a plane back from Chicago to LA, because of the rough ride they experienced on bad tracks. They also had a sleeper room, but neither one could get much sleep due to movement and track noise. Trains are good for day trips, but I would not travel overnight.

      the best way to do that is to exit the Southwest Chief at Williams Az, not Flagstaff. Stay at the hotel that is tied to the Grand Canyon Railway and take their train to the Grand Canyon rim.

    It is very amazing that the sits showing to the window, so that u can look outside what happen.
    In germany the sits are only away from the window, so that u see the others escpecially in subway and german "S Bahn".

    • @coswiger
      @coswiger 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's not quite correct. There are differences between an urban commuter train and a long runner. You're able to look outside in both as well as having different types of seat positions in each one. SWC's bonus though is the special panoramic car.

      You should take a train trip ANYWHERE in western Europe. Their trains feel brand new compared to anything Amtrak has. Oh, and they actually leave AND arrive on time! Amtrak is a joke.

    2-1/2 days LA to Chicago. That's the way to do it. Your own roomette, and you see parts of the country no-one else does. I flew home and it was cheaper than round trip airfare (25 years ago).

    At 1:00 time index, you start to see WHY you can't beat train travel. Amtrak doesn't care much (as a company) how you feel, don't like them at all, but the individuals working for them are pretty darn good, thanks to them-not their company and as I said, you can't beat train travel IMO.
