i could listen to this all day!
One of only a handful of violinists able to truly interpret and comprehend the meaning and also the punctuation of the composer's instruction (see original score). It is not "Allegro molto, Appassionato" but Allegro, Molto Appassionato. Not even just Appassionato (passionate) but Molto (very), Very Passionate. I am only familiar with this composer's specific instruction in a few piano pieces by Brahms and Szymanowski so the question is, What is Mendelssohn asking the player for? Well, everyone will have their own view and their favourite performance of this concerto but imo very few come close to performing it Molto Appassionato, perhaps Szeryng from mid-60's. This is what makes Shoji so special and confuses many listeners, she is totally submitting herself to the composition often at the expense of conventional understanding. She is a really wonderful violinist.
well said . thank you .
Thnks to skripachka for making us part of this magnificent concert version of Mendelssohn and also in good definition. More than fifteen years ago Sayaka Shoji is delighting us with excellent performances of the violin concertos of the most important composers and in this case than previous versions and reaches perfection. A real pleasure to encore.
This is breathtaking and tears summoning .Either talent attract beauty or beauty attract talent.
Sayaka Shoji,, extraordinaria como siempre ,, talento y pasión ,,, !!!!!!!
She is the best I've ever heard, when she plays you can hear every note. Absolute perfection.
Hilary Hahn
She is !
She takes us to the sweet and doloroso Mendelssohn's world tenderly.
Amazing playing...wonderful interesting thoughtful woman...and ....what gorgeous dress!!
To have mentored Sayaka Shoji must have embellished tremendously Yuri Temirkanov's sense of his own life accomplishments.
The proud smile while applauding the protege was his quiet private moment: the realization that he has contributed another enduring dimension of beauty to the world, and her name is Sayaka.
What a beautiful and fitting comment!
@@luizamsalgado Thank you.
How wonderful to see a recent performance of Mendelssohn violin concerto by Sayaka Shoji. And so beautifully shot. Thanks for posting this!
She is magnificent. Magnifica. Magnifique. Ausgezeichnet.
Ausgezeichnet in wirklikeit !

Thank you Skripachka. Sayaka's Tchaikovsky conducted by Temirkanov was my introduction to her magnificent artistry. Fitting that her most recent performance that I could find on TH-cam has her trusted and trusting mentor conducting once again.
The sense of deprivation has been alleviated tremendously. Don't you just love being melted by her lovely expression whilst weaving her magic?
Thanks so much again.
She is so humble, so beautiful
Yuri Temirkanov mentored Sayaka Shoji since her teens. Temirkanov,Shoji and St.Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra might have made nearly hundred concerts. They are united by mutual trust. Sayaka Shoji is the only non Russian who was invited in Termirkanov's 70th and 75th anniversary concert of St.Petersburg Phil.I had a chance to hear them in live. She played the same piece of Paganini for the encore.
Indeed -- I recall Shoji and Temirkanov teamed up for a wonderful rendition of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto a few years back. And it is still the best performance of that concerto, imo.
Thank you very much for this Upload in a high quality! How Sayaka Shoji plays is genial. But she looks also sad and unhappy and I hope and wish her all the best!
A recent Sayaka Shoji performance of the Mendelssohn? Thank you so much for sharing Skripachka! :)
sAYAKA SHOJI ERES LA MEJOR LEJOS EN EL CONCIERTO MUNDIAL DEL VIOLIN FELICITACIONES . desde Mar Del Plata , ARGENTINA ,,, !!!!!
Wonderful! Ms.Shoji has the power of David Oistrach when appropriate (her Prokofiev as an outstanding example), but here we hear a brilliantly emotional view of a piece too many treat as trivial.
I have avoided listening to this (although TH-cam never stops promoting it) for that very reason - I find this concerto too shallow. Well today I finally gave in, and I am happy I did. I think she would make music out of a cell phone jingle. First time to actually shed a tear or two listening to this concerto.
She has a way to change the colouring of a note while playing it which really gets to me. I still haven't figured out exactly how she does it.
Temirkanov's conducting of this concerto is nice too.
@@altoclef6688 Sayaka Shoji was the One that taught to me understand and love the Mendelsohn Violin Concerto. I guess I understand you...
super, danke
TERMIKANOV looks sooo happy
There are many nNumbers One, but not only she is a Number One, but the one that most often than any other flirts with something divine. Her performances Are A Revelation!

Mr.Salgado.Arigatou gozaimasu. I think that you have already heard
Sayaka Shoji&Vikingur Olafsson, Bartok, violin sonata no.1 Her artistry won’t fade.
@@jnsurg947 My pleasure Mr. MGH cnsGABA! Arigatoh is well a known japanese word here in Brazil (we use it often!), where japanese and descendants go very well together with us. Matter of fact my son is a grandson of japanese! Thank you always. Stay healthy, stay safe; good to know of you! ... Kindly regards, Luiz PS. I only wish the Unique and Sublime Sayaka Shoji records more often and that her records be more easy to find, as well to have more videos of Sayaka Shoji here in TH-cam ...
25:58 she's so angry because timpanist is always playing wrong😵💫
thank you for sharing .
Beautiful kimono costume, beautiful japanesque playing.
Muito lindo
esecuzione di grande espressività di Sayaka ormai maturata violinista
Questa è esecuzione!

I have watched a lot of Sayaka's videos on utube and am really impressed with her. On this video she looks so miserable! She seems to be in tears from the beginning - that seems a bit soon to be so emotional. It makes me think she either had a really bad day or life is not going so well for her. She is fantastic in the Beethoven Sonatas and Tchaikovsky concerto in D or many others. I can't watch this - I am going to try just listening - although I don't know the piece.
Much of that is down to the very high concentration needed when playing this Concerto, also the emotion she is feeling at the moment in time, seen many other violinists react much the same when playing this piece of music ( and also other Concerto's etc...... ) She looks very happy at the end though, also smiles sweetly during parts of this Mendelssohn : Violin Concerto where she is enjoying the music so much eg 15.26 and 23.36 to highlight just two instances. Sayaka Shoji is a wonderful violinist and every bit or better than the very best violinists, both past and present of any era.
This isn't her best performance. But still good enough.
In my opinion, Sayaka Shoji is particularly great in playing 20th century music like Shostakovich, Prokofiev or György Ligeti.
I am replying to Lovemetu's comment although I can't see it here. Her smile at 15.26 is very weak and does not really count as a smile. The one at 23.36 just might. True she does smile warmly at the end. I think I could go through the video and site so many instances of when she looks miserable or sad or like something has really upset her before the concert. To my untrained ears the music sounds fine and as usual and I suppose that is what counts. We all have issues to deal with, and perhaps she has done what we all do and get on with it. In her case she has so many videos for us to watch it's easy enough to avoid this one, because for me, I love the music she plays but equally I love watch her play.
❤
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
25.57 haha love it!
Haha, yes! Her look from that errant drum sound.
27:44 haha love it, too!
Esecuzione CELESTIALE!
This Lady challenges my atheism as nothing else.
She really does, great comment! Even "not so strong believers" ( like me...) are somehow checking their existential conceptions to see if they are truly taking life seriously, at a higher level! (smiles, lots of smiles)!
Why the crowd synchronize his claps? Is really uncomfortable
Not enough natural musicality to make a decent career....
Ida Haendel's 1945 version is much better. Sayaka turns lazy after winning the Paganini comprtition. She needs at least 2 more hours practice each day!
