I take a close look at my Seiko Prospex Shogun SBDC007 titanium watch with the 6R15 Japanese movement. The secret to this watch is the magical Diashield Titanium which looks like stainless steel but is VERY hard and scratch resistant. The thermal properties of this titanium as well as the light weight (about 105 grams) make this watch exceptionally comfortable on wrist in all conditions. Other specs: 42mm; Thickness 13.3 mm; Lug to lug 50mm; Weight 105g; Signed Crown; 120 click bezel; Drilled lugs; 22mm titanium bracelet.
Note: After making this video I moved a link from the 12pm side of the bracelet to the 6pm side to better center the clasp. This helped with the clasp sitting flush with the wrist. Now the watch rides perfect on wrist. So make sure when you adjust the band that you center the clasp properly. Now, if it's possible, this watch is even more comfortable! Also, after about a month of constant wear the watch seems to have settled down to about +1.5 seconds a day. I can live with that.
Additional update: After about two months the watch is now running a few seconds slow each day. I would rather it run fast but it's still well within acceptable time keeping specs for an automatic watch.

i like how you evaluate a watch. a watch is something that you are comfortable to wear and it's supposed to be reliable and durable. Seiko has many of these features, and for a reasonable price as well. it only not tells the skills of their craftsmanship but their integrity in pricing also. Seiko should be more respected by watch lovers.

There are plenty Seiko-heads out there among watch aficionados. If I had a dime for every high-end watch collection that includes a lowly SKX009/7, I'd be a rich man. So there is much love for Seiko, even though people associate it with value rather than luxury. But since Seiko and Citizen are two of the largest volume producing watch brands on the planet, I'd argue that the people have voted. Because watch aficionados aren't representative, I'd say John Q Taxpayer is.
Although it must be said, Rolex-heads begrudgingly respect Seiko. :)

I slipped on a metal step at work while wearing my Seiko SRP311J1 Monster whose band was designed with pins vs. screws. I ended up with one foot on the floor and the watchband caught on the edge of the step taking my 195 lbs without coming apart. It scraped a lot of skin off my wrist understandably, but the band held, saving me a sharp pointed step in the ribs. No need to worry about the strength of the pins. I will never buy another brand of watch.

One of the best watch reviews on youtube. I just received the watch and this video played a big part in my decision. I was deciding among so many brands, mostly swiss and german, but then this video just make my decision much easier.

Really enjoyed the post. I also have a favorite watch. Many years ago I bought a Tissot T Touch diver looking watch from Costco. Black dial. I wear it to work, church, swim, work on the pool. It is beefy, many, elegant, bondish. Has a compass, altimeter. Fits nicely under a dress shirt. Replaced the band (black rubber) once. It is the greatest! Scott

Good review. I'm glad to hear your thoughts as someone who owns more expensive watches. So many people (myself included) always tend to think that the most expensive watch (which they usually always buy next) is the best. Sometimes, you realize that the best stuff is the one you like the best, not the scientifically-best one.

I own Rolexes, Omegas, an IWC, Seikos, Citizens, and more. I can tell you I'd rather wear my Doxa 750T than any watch that I own or have ever tried. It's perfectly balanced. There are no sharp or questionable areas of comfort. It's actually professionally dive rated at 750 meters. The bezel is easier to manipulate and use than any "Professional" dive watch out there. Its legibility in all light conditions is flawless. I find most the high end Seikos to be ho hum and not really worth the money. However, and as you pointed out, the lower end Seikos I find to be some of the best quality for the price point.

Very cool. Titanium is great because you can make it very thin and light and it will still be stronger than stainless steel. That's why the band is so thin, it's still stronger than stainless. And you're right about the spring bars and pins failing long before anything else.

I’m glad that you found watch that you feel comfortable to wear and for you they might be the best watch, but absolutely they are not the best comfortable watch, trust me I have a lot of watch and I’m not a collector or anything, over the years I never sell my watches and so far I’m 45 and I have 11 watches that I collected over the years and the most comfortable watch is Hulk submariner and i will never be pushed towards any other watches or I might buy another pair around christmas and they will be the ONE who knows

A lot of views on this video, so popular that sellers are pointing to it to promote their SBDC007 stock.
I own one and it is great. I am not a fan of the way light comes off the hardlex crystal so I am going to swap it for a sapphire.
Other posters said it's an Omega knockoff. I own Omega Seamasters (three of them), and I couldn't disagree more. Certainly all dive watches will have some similarities because of common features like rotating bezel, lume markers, etc., but I think this watch has a unique character that even the snobbiest watch collectors can respect. Can't say the same thing about Invictas and other brands that are clearly derivative, but Seiko has a unique and distinctive look.

For sure! Titanium is a great underused watch material. It is so light on the wrist like you said. I own two watches that are as far apart in weight as can be. A breitling steelfish which weighs like 7.96 ounces. And a citizen blue angels TI that is only 4.1 ounces. Just about half. It's amazing the difference. While I do love the "built like a tank" feel of the breitling sometimes I don't want to feel my watch. Thats when I pop on the citizen.
Another thing I'd like to see more of is the new ultra hard metals like boron carbide and tungsten carbide used for watches. Say goodbye to scratches!

You cannot blame a titanium watch for being light weight. That was the purpose of making it out of such a noble material as Titanium. Considering how much effort and technology is used to manufacture and finish the bracelet and the case, plus the accuracy, this is a really timeless device.

I do like this one at the price point. 4 o'clock crown would make it more Seiko, less Subby from a distance. I still think I'll go the extra for a Marinemaster 300 though. I really like the MM. And that Sinn U1, black on bracelet, may jump the line.

I've had a 007 on my wrist for about 6 months and love it, and it does steal wrist time as my "go-to" weekender (over a seamaster, and a reverso) I totally agree comfort and legibility are amazing.
Off the wrist however, it feels cheap, with the sound, weight and feel of the band and clasp in titanium vs stainless... But when you get past that, it's wonderful.
    Thankyou for the review.

I see the appeal in the functionality of the apple watch, but I prefer mechanical over digital... I'll be interested in seeing a 6month apple watch update.
Side note - the Quartz Seamaster 120 in your collection, I purchased the same watch new in 1997 still have it and love it, it's a little tank (just do battery and seals) it just keeps on going!
      Keep up the good work!

try the citizen "ray mears" titanium with titanium bracelet version. its lighter than that watch and the totally flat monocoque design is just incredibly comfortable. It also has an on the fly divers adjuster and is properly 300m certified. the only downside is it looks like a field watch and the date window is too small. if you want a tool watch this is it. Oh and its a 1/3 of the price.

I own this watch. Never had issue with pins. Super comfortable. Paid $875 at the time. But band scuffs easily and crystal has like 3 nicks at least. My Sub 016610 cost me $8550. Put it thru hell, crystal and bezel are pristine, band gets scuffs but easily brushes out if you want to. The Diashield on the Seikos Titanium wont let me brush out so easily. The 6R15 started running slow on me after just 3 years. Its a retired keepsake for now. Sorry man, Rolex Sub, although more expensive and heavier, is the best All Around diver watch in the game EVER! Thanks for the video, I enjoyed your presentation.

Thanks for the review - I bet the watch appreciates if they're hard to find. I'm thrilled with my Seiko SKX173 which looks and functions very much like the one reviewed here, but in stainless steel. The Lume is amazingly bright all night long with brief exposure to the Sunlight. And it's quite accurate when I wear it instead of leaving on a watch winder where many watches run a little slow. e.g. After 2 weeks on the winder the Seiko will be only 2 minutes behind my iPhone, while my Submariner can be 1 minute behind after the same amount of time on a winder (but spot on when on my wrist). I rotate through 5 automatics with 4 winders, but my Seiko, my Submariner (1983), and my Hamilton (Harrison Ford Conservation Model) are the 3 watches I wear the most. I have an Orient Mako and Hamilton Khaki that I keep wound up as backups, now that I have nicer watches. I have some nice Swiss and Japanese quartz watches but I prefer autos, although my next watch will be a Speedmaster Moonwatch manual wind.

Nice review, and nice watch Craig. I just got an Omega Seamaster stainless (46 mm) after 14 years of daily wearing a Seiko Kinetic. I have to admit that I am a victim of marketing and feel rich when I wear the Omega. It's a beast, and it's heavy, but so long as I work out daily with only my right arm, everything stays balanced :).
After watching your review, I may have to consider getting a second daily wear watch. (and the kinetic is still running fine - as a gift from my wife I won't part with it :)

However, when I read about the Shogun, I got the impression it was a big watch. How would you say it compares to the models I have mentioned, if you've experienced them?

I like my Citizen eco-drive all-titanium perpetual calendar sapphire atomic watch 200m water resistant case, available at half the price that looses 0 seconds/day and has a band more consistent in appearance than the Shogun. It is also day, date, month and adjustable for time zones, which is great if you do any travel. All these modern features make the Shogun as passé as shoguns became.

I have a very large wrist and always have difficulty lengthening straps and centering a clasp on the back of my wrist. How easily will it be to do so with this bracelet? If I locate an extra link, can it simply be inserted into the short side of the bracelet?

I purchased the Shogun about 2 months ago. I was originally at jewelry store and pondering the Rolex Submariner w/no date.
Then I heard about the Titanium Shogun and was glad I skipped the Rolex. yeah, its a $1K dollar Seiko but its smooth soft on my skin and you trully do forget you have it on sometimes. Non watch folks will question $1K on a Seiko but thats about only negative the watch has.
I do wish the watch came with a see through back and Lume dial. I can add those myself but the clear back at least would help explain to non-watch folks whats a mechanical watch. I am thinking of my next watch to be the Rolex Explorer 1, Grand Seiko Quarts, or Seiko SARB035. The price is not the issue its the features and look primarily. I like NO DATES and only high end Seiko and Rolex offer that.
    Thank you for the video.

The only thing I don't like about that watch is the crown at the three o'clock position. I find that those crowns dig into the back of my hand. A crown at the four o'clock position would be much better for me. I find titanium to be a beautiful metal. That color is a welcome change from the more common gold and silver. Correct me if I'm wrong but I've heard that pins have to be used on titanium brackets because screws would strip the threads too easily on that metal.

I agree with you. I have encountered so many people which brag about Rolex as the best there is, and they have never even seen them, much less held one of them in their hands. Oftentimes (more often than not), their reaction is more like "damn, this costs 8,000.00?" I will not say Rolex watches or Omega are worthless. What I will say is that plenty of Japanese watches can give these swiss offerings a run for their money... And let's not even mention the Grand Seiko line..

Don: While very few Rolex or Tudor owners will claim any given Seiko, superior than their watches, those who know what they buy when making such a purchase, the true watch lovers and connoisseurs will certainly not dismiss a watch such as this, in the manner you are. They know and can appreciate quality, even if their money goes elsewhere. I think this is a very good watch, which can definitely dish it out with watches costing more, especially the Aquaracer for which you seem to keel over!

Good review. I have over 35 watches in my collection, including pocket watches. These include Seiko, Rolex, CWC, Omega and JLC, to name a few. I also have the SBDC029 Shogun, the newer version of you watch. It is very comfortable to wear and very lightweight. But the one that I wear the most is my Seiko SKX031. I love the design and It's also comfortable and lightweight, not like the Shogun though. The only downside for me is that it has the non-hacking, non-hand winding 7s26 movement.

Try the new Omega Co-Axial Seamaster Diver 300m. The bracelet is marvelous and at 41mm case and 12mm thickness it wears EXTREMELY well but that's not to say that Seiko Shogun is not comfortable.

I just got the watch Craig after watching your video, looking good. It's really bulky and large in size compared to any other watch I've owned such as the Omega Speedmaster and recent Steinhart. Then again, my wrist is small and I should stay with a mid size watch instead of this large one. Kinda debating or selling this or the Steinhart. Does that dive expansion poke into your wrist like mines? Maybe I'll remove it if I decide to keep the watch.

***** It's okay friend, I guess it's not for everybody. At-least now I know what to expect from watches at this level. I will test out the mini monster and probably try a Steinhart. Have you own any watches with the ceramic bezel Craig? I am waiting for a GMT with Ceramic and seeing if it's worth the extra money. I know it's more prone to scratches and has more of a glimmer shine to them.

Nice review and beautiful watch. But it's hard for me to fully ''get'' this watch. It's well over a grand - but it's mainly for the titanium - right? The Sumo has the 6R15 and for me really is the best bang for the buck when it comes to Seiko divers. Just my opinion.

Malik Martin you don’t know this guy. He own a business, is not lonely and has no mental health issues. The fact that you would make a comment like that which affects many people’ s lives tells everybody what kind of person YOU are. The weight is substantially less on a titanium watch. To some people it is not important to some it is. Putting a watch on a rubber strap then saying it’s lighter when comparing it to a watch on a bracelet is like comparing apples to pears, similar but not quite the same...Don’t make comments about people you don’t know, especially when your opinions are not worth much. You clearly have very limited horological knowledge so I suggest you educate yourself a bit more before making uneducated, unprofessional and worthless comments.

If the Shogun had a 8L35 movement, sapphire crystal, 300 meters ISO, ceramic bezel insert and a retail price of maximum 2000 USD then the Shogun would probably be the best dive watch for the money.
I would say that the Seiko Sumo is the best dive watch you can get for the money.
Sumo has the same movement as the Shogun, 200 meters ISO, Stainless steel (not everyone likes titanium) and it is really a solid watch, you can really feel the quality of the watch.
