My brother was one of the competitors in the latin portion of the competition. He told me that Richard was very hard working and practiced a lot for this movie.
Two of the "hottest" movie scenes ever made are in this movie ... 1) Gere's tango with Jen 2) Gere's ride up the escalator with the rose ....just remembering makes my blood pressure go up😅😅
In the international and American ballroom dance competitions I was in, the crowd all yelled for their favorites (by shouting the numbers, just like in this scene). I have to imagine 'Go Dad' is a little less common. But it's kind of surreal when dancing (or was for me), I heard the music, I focused on the dance and my partner. Many times I totally missed cheers for me, possibly because I was focused on those other things. Although if I imagine myself in such a situation now, and my unexpected daughter cheered from the audience; I might recognize her AND do the same thing -- maybe I should warn my dance partner ;)
I began dancing lessons from age three and every opportunity for the next twenty five years? I entered competitions galore and although winning many along the way nothing prepared me for the wear and tear it caused on my bones to cause me to now be debilitated most days. If wanting to dance , as you're so drawn to it.. try not to make it your be and end all of your existence . Find other past times that wont put too much of a strain on your body . Try your best not to end up like me 💐
It would be considered rude and innapropes at a real Ballroom competition to be cheering and yelling like that. Only on Dancing with the Stars does that happen and not nearly that loud or repetitive 😂
Absolutely wrong. My husband and I took ballroom lessons. We never competed but we attended several competitions to support our teachers. They encourage you to cheer and clap for your favorite couples.
When I was watching this episode, I had one question: Why on Earth did she ask him about his daughter? They could win this competition if she just kept quiet.
@@nancyhicks8329 True, but if she’s never been to a ballroom competition, then she doesn’t know she’s not supposed to yell out, which btw, she ONLY did during applause. Also, the other couple that crashed into them…the lead was supposed to be watching. It’s HIS JOB to make sure they don’t run into anybody.
"WHO KNEW???!!" In the West End production of Grease, the role of Danny Zuko was played by Richard Gere. So, to answer your question, anyone who's a Grease fan knew.
Agreed! Dance is closer to theatre than it is sport. It’s not a baseball game. Your audience is not eating hotdogs in the bleachers. It’s a rehearsed performance.
This was a Wonderful Film, that I most Definitely Enjoyed immensely. IT must be the Omission issue that got to Me of Richard Gere's Character admitting that He just wanted to Learn to Dance 🩰👟🩰. So He Could Ask His Wife. Shall We Dance. Even after watching it A Second or Third Time. IT Had Me Crying 🤣😂🤣 Bucket's of Tear's. Man what a Great Film.
The original is absolutely amazing, but as a life-long dancer I always felt the American version (ironically) stayed close to the source material in ways that make no sense culturally. Comparing the two makes for a fascinating study in both cultural norms and media translation.
@@melissaburke5682 My son was in S. Korea teaching English almost 20 years ago. He loved Salsa dancing. All the Koreans asked him if he had seen the Japanese film. He told me to watch it first as it hadn't been Hollywood hyped. At the time Blockbuster charged you $8 if you didn't return a movie & then it was yours. I rented it & paid the $8 fee up front because I said I wouldn't be returning it. I still have that video to this day. You really need to see the original. For all of us who took ballroom dance on our own without our partner who had no interest in it, this original version really hit home.
"Minha querida Valeska, dormi encilhado em um Cavalo. Sem esperar, o Cavalo saiu pulando, pula pra lá e pula pra cá e me jogou no vale que tinha em sua frente, quando eu acordei estava nos teus braços, Valeska. Continuei fazendo minhas rimas de amor, aquelas que só amor constrói, nunca mais parei de lhe fazer as poesias que te torna você ser sempre minha. Meu coração, através das orações suplica, tira essa dor do meu peito, que recita apaixão avassaladora.."
Y'all act surprised that he can dance. I mean he IS an American Gigalo after all - they got to know how to dance... on the floor and... and... oh, you know.
I was thinking the same thing. She made him nervous after saying that. Why did the private detective invited them without telling them that mums the word. Great movie anyway, I’ll watch it again.
This was a good movie, but the Japanese 1996 version was way better and so much more funny. It is in Japanese, so find a copy with English captions. You'll thank me for it. 🤣😁
American sense of supporting and cheering is wonderful, but does get out of hand. And this is an example of cheer-support FAIL! Encouragement is different from distraction!😮
I saw Richard Gere on the 405 Freeway driving a very expensive vintage Mercedes blue coup. He eas right next to me snd i saw him clearly. He is a small man, his face is thin and small. Good looking but he is not a tall guy like you think.
This is so ELEGANT, so Beautiful. Gere & Partner were PERFECT.
Hilarious scene. Richard Gere is really a good dancer. He did his own tap dance in Chicago, too.
I always laugh so hard when her dress rips 😂
My brother was one of the competitors in the latin portion of the competition. He told me that Richard was very hard working and practiced a lot for this movie.
He can also play the piano. That was actually him playing in "Pretty Woman".

They are so good. But I always laugh when he rips the dress off. Now I can't believe the daughter didn't know to be quiet at such competition.

Why didn't John's daughter just stay quiet? She ruined everything.
If she had treated it less like a sporting event, it would have been fine.
She was just cheering him on. She didn't mean to cause that.
I always loved this movie. It was always so sad as my husband would never come and see me dance especially in competition.
💔
Are you still married to him?
@@helenboice3094 No, not for over 20 years.
I’m so sorry he didn’t come to your competitions
I would love to dance with you.

Best scene is him coming up the escalator, dressed in his tux and holding a single rose. Yum.
MOST DEFINITELY
I have always longed for a man who loves to dance ❤
I have a plaque over my door, " I hope you dance"
I have one 😊
Sigh....me too...❤
Συν όλα τα χαρίσματα O Richard και καλός μουσικός και χορευτής τέλειος απεδείχθη μόνο που είχε η ντάμα ένα ατύχημα.......❤❤
I love that Bobbie didn't hold it against John for ripping off her dress and forgave him afterwards since she knew it was an accident.

it's called a story you nut, it's not about "winning"
Why didn’t the daughter stay quiet? That kind of would’ve helped too.

Episode? It’s a movie, not a tv series.
So right you are. However, he should not have broken his concentration, focused on winning, & then addressed the situation with wife & daughter.
My mother loved Richard Gere. She was a dancer too.
They were fabulous!!😊
I CANT GET OVER RICHARD GERE'S FANTASTIC DANCING......WHO KNEW???!!
How can that be so surprising to you? He danced fantastically in the movie Chicago!

Loved this 🎥 movies shall we 💃 dancing
Affectionately,...
I truly adore this movie! ❤
This film brilliant but watch the original if you can, Yes this is a re-make of a Japanese film
I admit I am thorougly annoyed by the daughter yelling at a ballroom competition. Not done.... but hay... it's a movie.
I compete and it is done- people yell support for their team members all the time…..
I have competed as well and friends and family call out your number during the final💃🕺

I agree totally.

No yelling aloud..
It does, exactly what just happened.
Not proper in the ballroom world

This is the American version of a Japanese film titled "Shall we Dance" from 1996 that I think is spectacular. If you get the chance, check it out.
Exacto, la versión original, la japonesa, es maravillosa también, no sé donde se puede conseguir pero vale la pena.
The Japanese version is by & far so much better … in my opinion.
I watched it before I saw this version. I agree, it was beautiful!!

That is the best part of the dance.
There so beautiful together

I love this movie!!!!!!
really liked this movie
John does not tear her dress off. During the dance he steps on the bottom of her dress and when she moves the dress comes off from the waist down.
One of the few JeLo movies that were actually very good.
I loved this movie!!

Yet another great JLo movie.

What is the name of the woman dancing with Gere?
Какого рожна орать с трибун

What is up with Richard Gere in all these Japanese film remakes.

I’m surprised nobody rushed over to the woman and added her
My favorite thing about Bette Midler is that one of her best friends is 50 Cent
I prefer the Japanese movie of this more.
I hate the way he left her exposed for so long and didnt help her cover up.

It was in her script to say hey dad 😂😂😂

The original Shall We Dance” from Japan is Waaaaay Better! Just watch it with subtitles and enjoy. No need for a shty simulation
LLLLLLLLLLLLL
How Jlo became famous is beyond me. The worst actress in history in my opinion.
Dance with me was much better with chayanne and vanessa williams.
