Hi Jon - Perhaps we should ALL write to Tim Davey saying that "As he keeps sending these threatening letters and I do not require a TV Licence -- He has left me no option but to visit his home to tell him personally that I do not require a TV Licence - and this visit could be Morning, Afternoon or Evening and any day of the week and if there is no reply I will call back to Investigate under caution why he keeps sending the letters threatening the goons, etc etc. See how he likes it !!! 67K of your viewers sending the letters might just get his attention!!!

I received a threatening letter from these bullies today. Their opening sentence read something along the lines of “You failed to contact us within the 10 days we gave you”…I was so pee’d off at the arrogance and audacity of the tone they used that the letter was swiftly inserted into a shredder and will soon line the bottom of my chicken’s nest. I think I got the same one recently. Mine went in the bin. Anyway, it was a new one on me that TV Licensing say the householder may refer to the notes in the letter during their "interview" with the "enforcement officer". This is yet another underhand tactic intended to convey the impression to the householder that he/she is expected to engage with the "enforcement officer". Crapita continue to add to their repertoire of dirty tricks.
Sound advice from CJ, as always, about not doing a no licence required declaration. Why would anyone want to be on the database of an organisation they wish to have no dealings with, and a contemptible one at that?

I gave my TV away to a charity shop in 2014, and I informed the TV licensing people that I no longer needed a TV licence. However, I still received threatening letters over a period of about a year after I had contacted them. Thankfully I live in Scotland, and Scots law is separate from English Law, and prosecutions of those who don't have a TV licence but own a TV are devolved to the Scottish Government. On advice, I decided to contact a lawyer as I was informed that receiving these warning letters could qualify as harassment. My lawyer contacted them informing them if they did not stop sending these letters they would be taken to court for harassment. As a result, I have not received another letter from the TV licensing people since 2015.

IMO it is a very bad idea to "let them know you don't need a license" because even that is giving them information. Then they have your name and probably an email address or phone number. The email address can be used to check for logins on BBC iPlayer for example, and they can go after you by name which makes any legal proceedings that much easier. The best possible situation is that they have to address you as "the occupier" because they don't know who you are. Just wait for an inspector to turn up, say that you have nothing to say to them and that if they continue to send threatening letters you will report them to the police for harassment. It worked for me, I haven't had a visit in over 10 years (I still get the letters though, they make me chuckle).

9 years without a licence, letters but no inspector ever. If you want to live without the BBC on your back just don't watch live TV. I have no issue with them having my email or my information because I don't own a TV or watch live content. The fear comes from people not paying for a licence but still watching live TV. If people are doing that then they have to take the consequences. I don't care if they check for log in because I never log in to anything to do with them. You can only beat the system by leaving it entirely.

What if at some time in the distant past, you logged into iPLayer on a friends computer and somehow those credentials are still cached? Now TV Licensing has enough evidence to get a search warrant. Now they come and search your property and see you have a phone. "That's capable of viewing live TV" they say. Now you are on the back foot and you have to defend yourself. You SHOULD care if they have your email address, even if you are doing nothing wrong.

This is for us a bit of a non-event really. We have not required a TV license on one property since 1997. They were told at the time that we did not need a license but after 2 years i.e. 1999 we started to get the letter, which we studiously ignored even when they got more threatening. They always get to the point shown in this blog and beyond and then they start all over again from the friendly letter that then gradually ramps up to the threatening one and so it cycled on for 25 years now. I had considered an action under the Harassment Act but I simply can't be bothered and don't want to expend the money to do it. Our postman thinks the letters are a hoot and he is pleased that they keep him in a job in some small way. If TV Licensing had carried out due diligence then they would have known that the property is unoccupied.
