Calibrating The Electric Choke

  • This is the first time I've seen this.. Dad showed me that dial on the left has to be loosened up, but can be adjusted up and down to adjust the choke. He tinkered around with this for a long time to get the mixture just right.

I´m wondering about the comments whoch claim that the engine is hot. Have a look into the manual from Edelbrock:
    "CHOKE ADJUSTMENT
The length of time during which the choke will stay closed is determined
by the position of the choke cap. As the choke cap is turned clockwise
the choke will stay closed longer. To properly set the choke, loosen
the choke cap retaining screws and turn the choke cap to the leanest
notch on the choke housing. Tighten the choke cap retaining screws,
and run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached.
With the engine running, slowly turn the choke cap clockwise until the
choke valve begins to close. Now turn the choke housing one notch
counterclockwise (LEAN) and tighten the choke housing retaining
screws. Periodic readjustment of the choke will be required as the
temperature changes throughout the year. After each adjustment verify
that the choke valve opens fully after the engine is warm.
Fast idle may be adjusted to manufacturers specifications (usually
1500 rpm) during normal choke cold operation. The fast idle screw
can be adjusted with engine off and throttle held open to allow screw
head access. Recheck fast idle speed after each adjustment."

I find ya get better results when you set the choke when the engine is fairly cold... that way the spring on the inside isn't heated up and released. That top butterfly should be wide open when the engine is warm. If it runs better with the butterfly closed a little, I suspect a vacuum leak somewhere... Sounds to me like the timing needs to be advanced just a tad too.

Yeah, it had a leak in the gas line, that we replaced, then we had to run it to blow out the old gas.

      @@hardendurobosnia17 Rempve the chocke cap.
Then you can either replace it or just zip tie the choke lever to the open position.
Looks shitty but worked on my car for 2 years because the cap melted (carb fire)
If the cap still is intact, you also could just turn it until it is fully open when cold and hot.

  • @MsTaraClifton

Don't follow this video. Only set your choke on a STONE COLD engine otherwise you'll NEVER get it right! The whole throttle blipping thing at the end of this video has absolutely nothing to do with your choke, cold idling, starting etc. This guy is chasing two problems at once and looking at the wrong solution - Do not use your choke while hot to fix a lean WOT hesitation. Instead - adjust your choke when cold, and then get your accelerator pump and/or low jets tuned correctly (Start with your low jet at gentle/slow throttle swings, and then adjust your accelerator pump DEAD LAST for those quick throttle bursts)

I was wondering why he was trying to adjust the choke plate on a hot engine. That fast idle screw is totally different than the fuel/air mixture screws. When he revs it i can tell its a vacuum or slight timing problem. But i can see some others commented on it. I love the old school stuff too.

A manual choke has a cable that runs inside the cab and is operated by the driver. Electric is mounted on the carb & works on its own.
