What is people-first language?

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 8 ม.ค. 2022
  • The Mental Health Commission of Canada says we often use language that can be stigmatizing towards people living with a physical or mental illness.
    Stigmatizing language can include sentences like "they're handicap," "they're schizophrenic" or "they're depressed."
    Experts say when we start identifying individuals as people, it allows others to see them and realize their illness is a part of them - it's not who they are.
    Global's Sharmeen Somani tells us how we can put people first when speaking.

    I’m not sure how this helps people embrace and accept themselves. Whether “I’m struggling with my weight” or “I’m overweight” it’s still something that is a PART OF ME that requires acknowledgment and acceptance in order to move forward in a positive self-worth kind of manner. Saying the words I’m an alcoholic is important because self denial about who we are is much more of the problem.

    • @kc3678
      @kc3678 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn't it then be more uplifting to say, I'm a human being who currently has a dependence on alcohol? But, nevermind that. Some people don't acknowledge that dependence on money and power is an issue and unfortunately they're the ones the system is favorable towards. Which then leads to the dependencies of the masses. But, this is where an awakening must happen, the need for a certain amount of autonomy is wired in us, the powers-that- shouldn't-be are always at odds with our autonomy.

      I think the idea is that you should not be categorized or defined in some way of something out of your control which is why your two examples do not compare. If I'm overweight, or an alcoholic, I have the ability to change that, where as schizophrenia...not so much, its out of my control, I didn't do anything to bring on this mental illness. I think that's what this video is trying to illustrate?

    I disagree about people first language. If someone is living with schizophrenia and is sensitive to being called schizophrenic, schizophrenia is not their only issue. They just need tools to help cope. That said, some people use such mental illness labels as weapons. And if you prevent these a-holes from labeling, they will still cause harm using other methods. Bottom line, those with mental illness and those without need better tools when dealing with a-holes.

    I completely agree with person-first language, and I certainly have my share of slip ups, but I would point out something I would correct in future versions of this presentation/story. "Frustrated" is a feeling, and I believe it is person-first language to use I-Statements, in such, I believe it is better say something like, "I am really feeling frustrated today," rather than a You-Statement, "You/they are really frustrating today." Some of this is semantics too, saying that "suffering" is more offensive that "struggling," may be true, but I'm not sure that is always true (both may be offensive). If a statement is necessary, perhaps, "They're presenting . . . today," being more specific as to what is observed, instead of adding interpretation to the presenting symptoms. If interpretation is indicated, then perhaps, "They state they are feeling . . ." and/or "Because [presenting symptoms] . . . , I believe they are struggling today." My apologies for being a little bit of an armchair critic; I'm not missing the point, which is very good, I'm just nit-picking.

      People are fragile, though. I personally don't struggle with a mental illness, but often is the case that people with a mental illness (or low self-esteem) LITERALLY lacks an element in the mind that 'shields' them against criticism. They sometimes struggle with even accepting constructive feedback because, often due to abuse, they have a poorly developed superego (an element in the mind that literally allows you to self-validate yourself) and this makes them hard to accept that they have a 'flaw'.
      I'm saying some people are LITERALLY unable to validate themselves on their own. This doesn't mean that we should excuse poor behavior though. We should not enable them, but we do need to encourage them to heal by taking responsibility for themselves
