HapplyFace they turned on Handicap or something else (idk last time i played the game was 6/7 years ago)you can find that in the options, the handicap adjusts by percentage and the higher % the characters survive less
High Bow Puffin 64 honestly, same dude. Competitive melee is more for styling tbh, meanwhile 64 can be way more of a patience game. Yes, melee can be that way too, but the level of patience for 64 is way beyond that. Every hit is critical in this game pretty much.
Man i love smash 64. Every character (Besides Samus) is actually really godlike in this game, so unlike melee or brawl, you actually DO see unconventional characters like Mario, Jigglypuff, or Link in grand finals. Then on top of that, this game actually has legit combos, even more so than Melee does. Like literally almost every character in this game can do touch of death combos, its awesome.
That's because of the high hitstun. Japanese version of this game has even more hitstun and has less Freeze Frames and Smash DI so you can do more death combos there. I know because I own the game actually.
In my college campus we Computer Science students have our own little room where you can play super smash bros for 64 and wii 24/7. It's so cool to see people still playing that game and having bunchs of fun.
Holy shit, it's true. I'm taking class with Isai and rumor was he was a top player in SSB. I had to see for myself, since he's such a quiet and nice guy, who never once talked about SSB.
Smash 64's balance (every character in the game stands a fair chance against another) is the reason why it's still played at tourneys from time to time.
Anthony Fish that's probably because Pikachu or Fox are easier to use, but other players, who know how to use, for instance, Jigglypuff or Luigi, can be at the same level/maximum potential of Pikachu or Fox.
Anthony Fish I haven't seen an incredible player using Samus, in my experience, I suck with Samus, but I've seen people destroying others with Jigglypuff, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Luigi... In average, Fox and Pikachu are good, because as I said, they are easy to use, reaching their maximum potential is not as hard as other characters, but others characters can be at the same level, sometimes even superior depending on the player.
Sergio Martinengo Well that can apply to just about any Smash Bros. game. In Melee everybody uses Fox, Falco, and Shiek in the tournament scene. But I've seen people do very well with lower tier characters like Luigi or even Bowser. However, I don't think we'll ever see somebody use Pichu, Kirby, or Game & Watch competitively. The same thing thing works for Smash 64 and Brawl. Now Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U on the other hand, I'm very happy that no character feels dramatically overpowered nor dramatically outmatched by others. :)
The 64 Grand Finals is still up by a lot at 460K, the closest to it from Apex 2014 is Mango vs Leffen at 376K. Also there are a lot more sets that have more views than Apex 2014 Melee Grand Finals: Mew2King vs Armada (PM Grand Finals), Nairo vs ESAM (Brawl Winners Finals), Mew2King vs Sethlon (PM Losers Quarters), and Mew2King vs Leffen (Melee Winners Semis)
I feel like the documentary was probably why this 64 set had so many views. This wasn't that long after its release and Isai's episode was pretty memorable
Who else wishes they introduce a remake of this game as a VC download for the Wii U and add the characters that were meant to be in before getting scrapped (DDD, Mewtwo, Bowser, Peach and Wario)?
I've played three tournaments in Venezuela, nothing big, about 16-32 players maximum, one of those in a convention. The three times I've ended up first with Pikachu, I don't know anyone who win me while I use Pikachu, but I've never been part of a World Tournament, I'd like to give it a try.

Surprised Isai went to Peaches Castle when Japanese players don't play anywhere else. I think Isai only went Dreamland against Kikoushi because he was a gentleman. He's not breaking rules, of course.
Directional Influence is the act of changing your trajectory when you get hit, in SSB 64 there's only "Smash DI", which is a type of DI that allows you to move your character some units during hitlag (hitlag is when your character is "freezed" for some frames because you got hit by an attack, hitlag occurs right before getting launched by that attack).
LwYz. Ph. there's "Slide DI" too btw. And the term "Positional Influence" is more correct for ssb64, as you can only change the initial position during the hitlag before taking the knockback. shadowskillet14 And you can't DI throw.
Its technical term is a "teleport". When running in a direction, you have to quickly press the opposite direction then nearly immediately change to up to jump. Ex: if running left, you'll quickly go straight from holding left to pressing right then up to jump immediately after pressing right. Jigglypuff, Samus, and Fox can all do this though it is most noticeable in Jigglypuff. If you press the B button as you jump (or immediately after jumping) to "sing" just right, you can also do what is known as an "extended teleport" and slide much farther.
Isai normally likes to play on his opponent's favorite map, so they're playing at their best. I think getting 2-stocked on the 3rd match made him a little angry, hence Peach's castle. Haha.
Phaiyte It always seems like when I watch high level Smash 64 matches, they just drag on like this. The only fast match I've ever seen was when Isai JV-5 stocked some guy years ago.

@3:11 how is he able to hit him so many times in the air like that? Whenever I try, my character move their arm slow and can't do a second attack in the air like that. So to be clear, how is he doing so many Up-Air without having to hit the ground first?
There's one every year. To practice, you can play online using an emulator such as Project64k. Just visit the Smashboards forums for more info (click on forums once you're on the site, scroll down to Smash 64 Discussion, and go from there!)
Just because they are defensive doesnt mean they cant fight the way most people do. Samus is great if you have patience and know how to use him. You can definitely charge and hit a person in 1 vs 1. The energy bally can take out any opponent before they land on the edge.
Raymond Marquez they're kinda bad sing is very vulnerable so is rollout and down b is a gamble since it's Kirby and he's floaty while all of kirbys moves aren't good in neutral
Kirby down b and neutral b are usually bad and up b is only good for recovering. Puff up b is completely useless, down b is only used in combos and neutral b is only really used when recovering.
That's because you haven't played it recently. As a kid, OF COURSE you'll dismiss Jigglypuff as a crappy character, or DK because he's slow, or think Fox is OP because he's fast, etc. but really playing this game as a more experienced adult is very fun and satisfying and you'll probably REKT even more with Link today. I know I do. Link has always been my main too, and the duels I have with my friend as DK are nothing short of epic haha
Samoanmike24 Well emulators are "lame" indeed in general. Kind of sucks the fun out of games when you have to fiddle around settings and controllers and bugs all the time. However in this case, Project 64 handles Smash 64 very well. I still have my N64, but I tried Smash on PC a year ago to see how I could improve the graphics, and it ran flawlessly as long as you chose the correct video back-end or whatever it's called, otherwise all items are super tiny lol.
TurtleGalaxies No I wasn't referring to the ergonomics I was referring to the toggles unresponsiveness, especially when compared to the indestructible Gamcube toggle which the Wii nunchuck and new wiimotes use the same toggle just w/o the inner two rings. If I was competing in this (I would hold my own, and probably be the best if I lived in my parents basement like these guys) I would most definitely do some custom work on a N64 controller specifically for this game. IE put in a GC toggle on, eliminate the third hand handle, and make the button layout better. If bringing a custom controller is even allowed. I dont see why it wouldn't be so long as you had an identical one to offer your opponent if he choosed to use it so it would be fair. Sometimes the controller, and not the player, is the limiting factor. That goes out to you MKW having to push the D-pad to do tricks/wheelies when you need to turn and correct elevation at the same time as activating the stunt/trick.wheelie button. N64 toggle is unresponsive and "sticky" for lack of a better word.
+AquaDonkey69 480p Directional Influence. It works differently in this game than it does in the others. Here, when you are receiving a hit you can jiggle the controlstick so that your character moves in that direction, getting you off combos, hitting the stage to reduce knockback and such. In others it just affects the direction you go. Whilst the 64 type of DI is called SDI in other games, and is the same thing.
So why does this game seem to inflict more 'oomf' to the damge? people being destroyed with 70%?? in the new smash ppl can have 180% and still not fly off the screen.
Watching Sm64sh is like watching some sort of gentleman's sport. The commentators are polite and insightful and mature. The crowd applauds politely after some stocks. The players are jovial and relaxed.

However in this case, Project 64 handles Smash 64 very well. I still have my N64, but I tried Smash on PC a year ago to see how I could improve the graphics, and it ran flawlessly as long as you chose the correct video back-end or whatever it's called, otherwise all items are super tiny lol.
If he had the lower platform on last, he would’ve won
Great commentary!
Throw me in as Link they're both jiggly-Kirby toast.
They're the best players in the world lmao, also isai is the best link in the world and link is the worst character in the game
It is all about the quick ground game
Which they can also body you with, regardless.
Do they use the stock 64 controllers?
Nevermind. They use stock controllers. How the hell are the toggles not royally fucked?
a little magic called super glue and ducktape.

No I wasn't referring to the ergonomics I was referring to the toggles unresponsiveness, especially when compared to the indestructible Gamcube toggle which the Wii nunchuck and new wiimotes use the same toggle just w/o the inner two rings.
"Isai takes him to Peach's Castle"
why the itens were disabled ?
lol watch more tournement matches- they never play with items
Because items suck, especially in a game with no air dodging lol
Lmafo
HAPPY BDAY ISAI
can someone explain what the notation "DI" means
+AquaDonkey69 480p Directional Influence. It works differently in this game than it does in the others. Here, when you are receiving a hit you can jiggle the controlstick so that your character moves in that direction, getting you off combos, hitting the stage to reduce knockback and such. In others it just affects the direction you go. Whilst the 64 type of DI is called SDI in other games, and is the same thing.
+John A. cool thank u, i only really play 64 ive just been looking to get better :)
I wish you luck man, I play all of them but just 64 competitively and it's fun as hell :)AquaDonkey69 480p
how good are these players, cause I have this game and I feel like their kinda bad
Flying puff ball grand final?
So why does this game seem to inflict more 'oomf' to the damge? people being destroyed with 70%?? in the new smash ppl can have 180% and still not fly off the screen.
If only grand finals was Falcon vs Jiggly/Link
