Manuel kfc There are 2 different kinds of Heartless, Pureblood Heartless are like Shadows, no hearts are release when slain. Emblem Heartless are the ones with the Heartless symbol like Soldiers. When slain, they release the hearts and it returns to the person who lost it.

It does have a heart shaped opening in its chest, but it was created solely from pure darkness and not from someone with a strong heart. Since it didn’t have an actual heartless emblem on its body anywhere, it’s considered a pureblood.

Let’s see… Flame Core, Water Core, Earth Core, Demon Tower, Demon Tide, Lich, & Dark Inferno… so we got 4 (3 if you count Demon Tower and Demon Tide as the same, since Demon Tide is the super-powered version of Demon Tower) awesome Pureblood Heartless bosses & 3 new weaker pureblood heartless that use more than the darkness element in their attacks.
Honestly, I really wish Square would re-use this Boss design or the secret boss design from BBS. The *thorns* and use more purple/red more often. Also, I miss reaction commands, they felt more organic than situation commands.
The Quadratum Dark Side in the recent KH4 trailer kinda shows some of the Dark thorn designs in it. So maybe the idea didn’t die off completely. I actually came here to compare after watching the trailer because it reminded me so much of Dark thorn/Shadow stalker. Design was indeed cool and ahead of it’s time back in the day

I just realized that the Shadow Stalker looks like a powdered up version of the Darkballs from the first game.
I always thought as a kid he was the last of the Darkballs because they disappeared in Kingdom Hearts 2

Out of all the heartless bosses, this ranks in between 2 and 3. I love how it's formed.
I hope we get more pure heartless like this in kingdom hearts 3, I think they get way better designs than emblemed heartless.

Dark Thorn should be saved as one of the lasts bosses in the game or even as secret boss. Its 2 stage battle, its design and combat style are awesome
