The whole performance is based on traditional Korean operas called “pansori” and use many images and items based in Korean culture from traditional instruments to the group wearing traditional Korean clothes called hanbok. The female drummers are representing “Samgo-Mu” the fan section with jimin is representing the fan dance “Buchaechum”, the section with jungkook represents the mask dance called “Talchum,” the band with the animal mascots and streamer dancers represents both “Pungmul” and I believe Korean new year

Well, In Award shows like MMAs & MAMA, etc. U can't bring as much stuff as u want By spending as much money as you want. There's certain amount of Money fixed as equal expenditure for all Groups & Non R allowed to surpass that limit!!!
In fact, Jimin's fan dance was such a great performance that he received a plaque of appreciation from the Korean Fan Dance Association.

Just so you know, there was a dancer who vlogged (it's on youtube) her dress rehearsal for this performance as one of the traditional female dancers dancing beside J-hope in the "boxes / scaffolding" who started the dance intro. There were literally 3 levels of dancers (no mirror images). And as others have stated, that whole intro for IDOL (title track off "Love Yourself: Answer" album) was dedicated to Korean culture, they even remixed the song to enhance Korean musical instruments when compared to the original version.
I'd love for this comment to go up!! I was a little bit annoyed by the slight ignorance of the Korean culture symbols, which I think is obvious at first glance....

Late comment, but this whole performance was a response to people saying BTS "weren't Korean enough". So there's the fan dance (for which Jimin actually won a Korean cultural award later), there's Jungkook using white fabric for his dance when white is representative of Korea, there are the traditional Korean dancers, there are the traditional Korean lions. Then BTS just throws a party, basically throwing a party for Korea. It's a great performance, but it's also a response to haters who said they weren't Korean enough. It's a flex, "this is what we can do, in Hong Kong, for Korea".

3:43 this was a mistake the camera was supposed to switch to the giant red mask where the dancers will appear the same way they switched for jhope to jimin and from jimin to jungkook so smooth, but it got back to jungkook and you can see that he was getting down not aware that the camera is still on him

The song is called "Idol" and has multiple meanings, including being the conclusion of the three part series "Love Yourself". It has a lot to do with them as kpop idols as well, since a lot of the kpop music industry is very controlling and constantly tries to cut and shape idols to what they want them to be and less so about the person's own individuality. BTS sings that, despite the backlash of the kpop industry as well as the kpop fans and antis (online commentators called netizens & invasive and crazy 'fans' called sasaengs as examples), they have come to embrace and love parts of themselves that may not be wanted by others. While the music industry that they are part of irons out different sides that idols want to show, BTS accepts that the many faces they have are still all them. They refuse to be manipulated by the industry's "culture" and will become who and what they want to be on their terms only; they want their fans and those listening to be happy and do the same for themselves as well. Overall, the song is about celebrating accepting yourself in all ways and forms and not needing the acceptance and approval of others.
An important part I'd like to mention...the song is a mix of traditional Korean and African influences. The song itself combines sounds of Korean traditional folk instruments, but also from gqom, a genre of EDM from South Africa. The choreography is a beautifully blended combination of traditional Korean dance and popular styles of dance in Africa such as the Gwara-Gwara and Nigerian Shaku Shaku. And lastly the fashion they chose were between traditional Korean male outfits called hanbok (this is what they wore for this particular show) and bright suits tailored in gorgeous Ankara (African-styled fabric prints) to represent a western based influence. There are many other influences both Korean and African in the video and song, but if I included all of them this comment will be even longer than it already is so if anyone else want to contribute, please feel free. Either way, with this very contrasting cultures, they were trying to show that they won't forget or lose themselves as Korean artists, regardless of the range of genres they may scale and the blending of western sounds they may have.

@@Kxto2 Yes, South Korea's main animal symbol is the Siberian tiger. The lions are for the traditional lion dance that is practiced in *many* Asian cultures. As lions are not native to far eastern Asia, it's believed the dance either started or was heavily influenced by Central Asian (like Persia) or Indian cultures that spread east (especially in China), along with Buddhism. There are even variations of the type of "lion" in Asian cultures (combining with dogs, unicorns, and other mythological creatures).

This performance was a journey. The members start off in darkness without their identity, stuck in little boxes and tied like marionettes. Then they come out and toss their masks aside to say "this is who we are". Their statement was so bright and the way they showcased the Korean culture was absolutely beautiful. Definitely holds the #1 spot on my list.

The production you've watched was part of Korean Tradition and Culture. The first part was a Korean lion dance. If you noticed the music in Idol you will hear some background live playing korean traditional instruments which added more festivity atmosphere in their performance. The solo that was performed by the 3J was also part of Korean traditional dance. 3J are BTS dance lines Jimin & Jhope (main dancers) Jungkook(lead dancer)
Jhope- traditional drum dance
Jimin- traditional fan dance
Jungkook- traditional mask dance.
Jimin even received an award from the cultural conservation society for his epic fan dance.
To add on, what they're also wearing is called "hanbok" a traditional korean attire being used in some festivals and ceremonies.

The 2019 MMA just happened last night. Y'all should totally react to those performances too, especially the Dionysus stage. I know nothing about stage production and I can tell you it was a fuckin' masterpiece. It was the most dramatic performance I've ever seen on an awards show
I love that Idol starts with the rap line. This song has such strong raps. The vocal line also slays in this song. Idol is one of my fave BTS songs.

This is Jimin Effect. This is what happens when you get to know Bts for the first time.
You can feel their energy, because they mean and feel what they sing. It isn't a simply summerhit, but a message to the society. They sing that they don't let people put them into social categories. It doesn't matter how you call them, they are still themselves and people cannot stop them loving themselves. That's what this song is about. And because it has such a deep meaning, you can feel the power and their dedication.
Every time they say bts concert I laugh so hard. It truly was their own mini concert but this was a live award show.

Btw, almost everything BTS does is real, not CGI nor mirror image. It was 3 levels of dancers during J hope’s part. BTS will challenge everything you’re used to with Western music.

Emily I believe I acknowledged that in my comment and also recommended him to do an intro video to the members. After a while, enthusiasm cant be the only thing that keeps you going.

When I watched this live through net, I was hyped and crying, they owned that 20mins of the show. Justine MMA (Melon Music Awards). Part 3 song was "IDOL" (2018), they were scrutinised by some netizens saying they are on longer Korean since they've been big worldwide and they made a comeback ,,, hard stating we are Korean and we're proud of it, they incorporated traditional song,lyrics, steps, performance to this, this is one way to shutup those haters!!

Also, this performance, its scale, concept, choreography and everything else was this way to present as much of Korean culture as possible. They're trying their best to promote their culture through their music.

This final song performance was a huge celebration of Korean culture. While Idol as a song with its choreo (and in its music video) takes from both Korean and South African culture, this specific performance was such an exciting and proud performance representing Korea. The Korean audience would immediately recognize the traditional dances at the beginning, the traditional instruments used, and traditional lion dancers and streamer dancers. The song itself is packed with adlibs that are used in traditional Korean music (for example, they say “Ursoo!”). Thanks for enjoying this performance!

idol is not an older song i believe maybe like a year or two old i'm unsure when it was released and junkook i believe is the main vocalist out of the four vocalists... to get deeper into the members individually i suggest watching an introduction to bts.... it will clear some things up that you may have confused....and i also believe that this performance was an awards show that bts was either opening for or ending for... unsure of which. you should definately react to more live performaces that bts has done and their concert performances as well...
