As someone who owns this game, I agree with you 100%. It was also pretty clear that the people who made the game didn't know much about Digimon. Maybe you should just review the Cyber Sleuth games next?
This channel has become so much more interesting since you started looking at weird yugioh and Digimon stuff, never know I needed videos about old anime board games until now
My guess is that they are build in a rush so they can sell and profit (while the franchise is popular) so there would be very little playtesting (If any)
I'm glad you're talking about Digimon more often right now. Digimon was always my favourite monster collecting game as a kid (Monster Rancher a close second). I don't know if you've played Digimon Card Battle (The PSOne game) it's better than the irl card game and I find it to be pretty strategic. I'd love to see you talk about it.
I remember having this as a kid. What my friends and I would do rewrite the boost card on notecards and add in our own rules to the game cause how boring it was. I mean like cards that steal a player chip or +1 one of your crest. This is one of those board games you have to make up your own things to make it fun.
Oh man I distinctly remember having the pillowcase at 3:09 as a kid. I loved it so much that after it began to rip I had my mom mount it like a poster lol.
To be honest, the more you explained it, the more sense it made...it seems like a reasonably simple concepts with nice referencing to the series. Then the ending against the final digimon is insane.
It's really cool seeing you talk about this. My Mom gave this game to the kids as a Christmas present when it first came out because my Dad was out of town and it was going to be a crummy Christmas. We were all kids and had a great time. Since then we have played it every years on Christmas Eve to decide who that years Digimon Emperor is. (I'm the current emperor in case anyone was curious) We're all adults now, but it's still a time when me and my siblings actively get together, so I owe a lot to this game even if it is really bad. PS. Your copy is strangely bad quality. In mine, all the tokens fit in the holder, they are all centered, and most importantly the board is an average thickness chipboard instead of whatever that flimsy paper board was.
this is the kinda of game you add home rules for. when me and my brothers used to play with our parents, we had a rule where you could step in and interrupt another players battle by fighting the player yourself, losing gave the challenged player use of your digimon for the battle and winning force a crest trade and ends the battle against the boss. it added some much needed competition and added well onto the risk/reward system.
As I remember in the original series if a Digimon dies in the real world they die permanently which makes sense because there's no way for their data to reform outside of the Digital world or at least a Digital environment like someone's computer.
I actually have this. I got it as a gift from my elementary school teacher and have it displayed in my room. I haven't played it once, but I thought the little Digimon chips were hella cool. As a matter of fact, my love of Digimon stemmed from this game, in a way. A substitute teacher from a previous school gave me some of those chips if I did good on my schoolwork. I never knew they were from the board game until the aforementioned gift, but ever since that day I've loved Bukamon and Tentomon and all the rest. So thanks, Digimon Board Game, for getting me hooked on a badass series.
I have a Digimon board game somewhere, but it's very different to this one. It's presumably an earlier version, because it's based on the Devimon arc - the board is made up of the fragmented pieces of File Island, and there's a picture of Devimon in the centre. It comes in a square box instead of a rectangular one. I don't remember much about the gameplay, I don't think I played it more than once or twice.
Interesting concept but probably would have been better as a game for gameboy. 4:34 Also what's up with the crest colors, while they are correct, the are completely mis-matched. For example, Love is supposed to be the Pink one, not Sincerity (Which should be green).
I remember having this and then wanting to create my own version of it. I taped a bunch of paper to some random game board and made a full board game that was, like... Steal a crest of the same type from another player. Move another player to start of zone. Player holding this card at the end of game automatically wins against dark master (only 1 of this card). Subtract from another players die roll. Skip a turn. Make another player skip a turn.

CandyLand is kinda fun, though, because you can cackle at your opponents when they’re sent almost all the way back to the beginning or when you pull the card that almost puts you at the end.
