Little Mac is one of those characters I unabashedly loved as a kid. Dunno if it was because we're from the same state or we're both shorties, but anytime I see Nintendo bring him up I get excited.

No see, Little Mac's inclusion in smash is perfect. Just like in his core game, he is absolutely and completely outclassed by everyone, and he must use extremely high levels of skill and mastery to take any opponent down.
That's why Sakurai is a master in his field. He understands the fundemental cores of a character, and uses those to build up their kit. Just like he did with Steve.

As much of a throwaway character as he's supposed to be, Punch Out Wii made me fall in love with Doc Lewis. I always imagine him being this much-needed supportive father figure for mac. And in Doc Lewis' Punch Out you clearly see how close they are. I keep wanting to learn more about him
The moment Mac was in smash, I picked him up and just fell in love with him, he was the fighting style I enjoyed, I know his air game is garbage, his recovery is abysmal and he's easy to combo against, but right now, I just know I'll keep loving him

I think that playing Little Mac in Smash is very much representative of how you should play Punch-Out!!; though it seems no one knows anything about that. You have to use his speed to dodge attacks, and only attack when you see an opening. It's quite counter-intuitive for a very fast character in a fighting game not to be a rushdown, but it makes sense; you can't rush down your foes in Punch-Out!!, either. You have to be patient, watch your foe, predict and react to their movements, and only go for attacks and combos when you have the chance.

Plus, have stars ever been gained in the series by dodging? All I've ever known stars or meter to be gained from in the series was punching opponents at certain times. Of course, no meter or stars were ever gained by getting hit, but I still think the intention on that side was to make it a comeback mechanic.
I love him... he is the biggest connection between my dad and I have when it comes to video games, since he played the original arcade game and then I mained Mac when Smash came out for the 3DS

People thought they were doing him dirty, but in reality they stuck to his roots, making him have to fight as a pro, to become the top dog!

He was obviously ALSO Little Mac, his wireframe skill was unfortunately banned from use in official boxing matches but he managed to bust it out again as a costume in Smash Bros. Mac is still nettled that that cheap hack Peter Punch's transparency skill was perfectly legal but his wireframing was "too much of an advantage", but Little Mac is used to getting shafted.
Mac’s story in Punch Out(specifically Wii) could be seen as a metaphor for his life. He works hard all throughout, faces big challenges, slowly is recognized, and passes away as a big name. If you consider some theories about why Mac is 17, not even legal age, and many boxers don’t really fit boxing anyway, it might be even stronger of a metaphor for Last Stand being the last stand against some sort of disease.
Sakuri kept true to Little Mac and made him feel like an under dog in Smash, being classed as the worst fighter in the game. But if you can use him properly you can take out your enemies with some swift well times punches.
Little Mac being bad in smash plays into his character. To get good playing Little Mac, you're going to have to overcome near impossible odds. But if you keep trying and learn from your failures, you can get there. Just like playing Punch Out, you study your opponent, find their weaknesses and patterns, then sock them for the KO.
As a Little Mac main, I have to say that he's definitely a bit harder to use. But, if you practice and can use him right, he canplay REALLY well. (My Little Mac is in elite smash btw)
Fun news in the competitive scene at least. Mac has seen a general rise in popularity due to 2 players. Alternis and Peanut, mainly Peanut though. These 2 MDVA players have pushed Mac to the limit, unlocking tech nobody would have ever thought of, even tech that improves his recovers slightly. He’s back on the rise!
Miyamoto prolly doesn’t think they can do anything new with it. He’s generally the first naysayer to any sequel that is just a sequel with no “gimmick” to go with it.
Eh it's not really about getting good, it's about getting patient and playing super lame against him. The most viable counterplay against mac is banning FD and camping the platform.

fun fact: most the fandom considers the characters from the Arcade game, original NES Punch-Out (and the 2009 reboot), and Super Punch-Out's protagonists as different characters. the arcade character is Peter Punch, the NES and Wii character is Little Mac, and the Super Punch-Out character is called Birdie Mac.
I instantly loved Mac in Smash. At the time I didn't even know much about him besides the Wii Punch out game. Combining this with the fact I just love boxing in general and practice it as a good workout, he became my main the moment he became an option to play. From the get go, I of course disliked his recovery, but my love for boxing and the Punch Out game made me realize that was the point. He's a boxer, a fighter who has great speed, power, and dodging capability, powerful combo potential, a powerful comback mechanic, and takes advantage of his opponent's mistakes and punishes. Of course he doesn't have good aerial ability, cause if he did he would've gotten the same hate Bayonetta did, more than he already got. Within my friend group, everyone agrees Little Mac is not the best by a long shot, but when I play him, people are actually more careful cause I use every ability he has to my advantage. After I learned more of his history, it just made me love playing him even more, and now in the military, my colleagues got a new perspective after watching me dominate with Little Mac against opponents who played characters like Ness, K. Rool, Ganondorf, Mega Man, and even Zelda, and when the DLC characters came out: Pyra/Mythra, Sora, Min Min, and Sephiroth. Despite them being leagues above Little Mac in many ways, being able to strike fear and have people back off with who would normally have no issue with Little Mac is satisfying. In short, Little Mac is badass and people who hated him in Smash just completely missed his whole purpose and play style. It just came naturally to me, and he's still my favorite character, besides K. Rool now too
sorry to say, but he is whie peanut is godly and I enjoy watching him it doesn't mean the character is good compared to the others, for example tweek is better than esam, yet Pikachu is better than diddy kong, he has an insane ground game and a DLC level comeback mechanic but the fact that is aerials are horrible and his recovery is abysmal at best really just ruins his gameplay

I will say this on stages that are just on the ground like terry’s, he’s a beast. Put little Mac in a game with little aerial combat he’d probably be be good. Imagine little Mac in street fighter with most of the qualities from smash, like super armor and ko punch. He would probably be decent.

15:00 Ok, I am a huge Little Mac fan in any Smash Bros. game. I feel he is very fun to play as and a challenging opponent to face even when controlled by the A.I., he is totally viable in Ultimate! But even I have to admit this was the most funniest and most accurate meme for his recovery issues.
The Famicom is actually older than Punch-Out!!. The Famicom came out in July 1983 whereas the arcade version of Punch-Out!! was released in December of that year.
Honestly, I adore Little Mac. I tried with the competitive scene for a little bit with 4 and ultimate, but I remember playing as him once and feeling such a rush of playing a character with many flaws and coming out on top after so much hardship. Its quite a shame that so many people don't realize that Little Mac, like many of the fighters in Punch Out!!, is a gimmicky character. Try and approach him in his own game, like the casual community did, and you'll find that he's a powerhouse, which led to people saying that he's too good. Figure out and exploit his weaknesses, like the competitive community did, and you'll find that he's somewhat of a pushover, which led to people saying that he's too bad. Still, the idea of the underdog story is a time-told classic, and I adore every second I spend playing Mac. I think I'll be a Little Mac player until the day I die.
I have a such soft spot for Little Mac and his series mostly because I'm short, but also because he doesn't stop training and pursues his goal to become a champion, despite his age and height, that's a determined sportsman! I find it inspiring even if boxing is not really in my interest.
Man, this just upsets me lol. I remember back when I was younger I used to rent Punch Out for the Wii from Blockbuster back when that was a thing, so when I heard that he was getting into Smash 4, that had to be the most excited I got for a character inclusion since like, Sonic got in Brawl. I definitely like to play him in game so it's not disappointing on that front, but to see a character and franchise I love so much have so many people turn a blind eye to solely because he's bad in competitive Smash, it's just... unfortunate.

Little Mac's smash playstyle perfectly represents that of his actual games, if you just try spamming attacks then you're gonna get racked real fast, you have to use speed and percision to dodge attacks while still staying in a close enough spot to punish, and use openings in the enemies playstyle to do good damage
been a mac main since DAY 1, always loved the fact that his underdog thematic works through gameplay, he is by far the best comeback character (when on last stock) because everyone gets cocky and underestimates what you can really do, I've gotten to elite smash un ultimate with mac only, and in sm4sh (granted i was on 3ds) I could consistently win with the character, gotta play him like his game/a real boxer.
Little Mac may not get much love in Smash or even his own series at times but at least he's been given plenty here with this spectacular video showcasing his history. When Next Level Games was purchased, my immediate thought was hopes for a new Punch-Out game... though it'll be weird to play the game without the Balance Board; it's how I always played Punch-Out Wii.
Poor guy, he always gets the short end of the stick by a lot of people. Yet he is the prime example of an underdog that will keep fighter no matter what.
It's sad that Mac was hated by the Smash fans! I like this character; despite his small size the teenager is brave and perseverant! I admire his courage :D Also, it's impressive to see a tiny guy like him beating thousands of muscled mans who are faster and stronger than him! Mac was not the only character who's hard to control| use in Smash. I got the one on my Wii and ALWAYS had a hard time with: Snake cause i can't aim with his missiles, Bowser cause he's slow and it's hard to jump with him, Olimar cause i don't understand how to properly uses the Pikmins, Ness and Luca cause i can't bounced back on the stage if i'm ejected. Every time i try to practice with thoses characters, it's difficult! It doesn't make me hate them :) I had fun with my sister even if using them is hard!
As someone who mainly uses Lucas, i agree with the mentality of characters who are meant to be played in an unique way to win, you don't need a character that feels the exact same as Mario or something, the fact that you loose with some of these characters merely means you ain't playing their playstyle, it doesn't mean the character itself is bad, it just means that they're supposed to be played in a different way

Little Mac will always be my number one Smash main and is one of my favorite characters. I love boxing as a sport and Little Mac being a boxer and going toe-to-toe with people who are gods, demons, demon slayers, and even god slayers, will always be my favorite thing while playing him.
I have to 100% disagree with the guy who says "Mac is boring and he encourages you to play boring" I can't play Mac because I'm bad. But watching People who know how to play him is always exciting to me. I don't like 7 minute games where 6 minutes is spent trying to safely land hits in neutral. Mac encourages you to "Get in there." To me that is way better to watch than a Ness, Link, or Villager who camps projectiles the whole time.

It’s interesting hearing the Japanese response to Little Mac, because I remember the Smash community being very happy with his inclusion.

He was obviously ALSO Little Mac, his wireframe skill was unfortunately banned from use in official boxing matches but he managed to bust it out again as a costume in Smash Bros.
Mac is still nettled that that cheap hack Peter Punch's transparency skill was perfectly legal but his wireframing was "too much of an advantage", but Little Mac is used to getting shafted.
At least the wireframe comes up as a skin in Smash.

Little Mac is awesome.
Mac’s story in Punch Out(specifically Wii) could be seen as a metaphor for his life. He works hard all throughout, faces big challenges, slowly is recognized, and passes away as a big name.
If you consider some theories about why Mac is 17, not even legal age, and many boxers don’t really fit boxing anyway, it might be even stronger of a metaphor for Last Stand being the last stand against some sort of disease.

Sakuri kept true to Little Mac and made him feel like an under dog in Smash, being classed as the worst fighter in the game. But if you can use him properly you can take out your enemies with some swift well times punches.
Remember what Rocky Balboa said: "life isn't about how hard you can hit but rather how hard you can get hit and still get up."
Little Mac being bad in smash plays into his character. To get good playing Little Mac, you're going to have to overcome near impossible odds. But if you keep trying and learn from your failures, you can get there. Just like playing Punch Out, you study your opponent, find their weaknesses and patterns, then sock them for the KO.

As a Little Mac main, I have to say that he's definitely a bit harder to use. But, if you practice and can use him right, he canplay REALLY well. (My Little Mac is in elite smash btw)

Fun news in the competitive scene at least. Mac has seen a general rise in popularity due to 2 players. Alternis and Peanut, mainly Peanut though. These 2 MDVA players have pushed Mac to the limit, unlocking tech nobody would have ever thought of, even tech that improves his recovers slightly. He’s back on the rise!

I instantly loved Mac in Smash. At the time I didn't even know much about him besides the Wii Punch out game. Combining this with the fact I just love boxing in general and practice it as a good workout, he became my main the moment he became an option to play. From the get go, I of course disliked his recovery, but my love for boxing and the Punch Out game made me realize that was the point. He's a boxer, a fighter who has great speed, power, and dodging capability, powerful combo potential, a powerful comback mechanic, and takes advantage of his opponent's mistakes and punishes. Of course he doesn't have good aerial ability, cause if he did he would've gotten the same hate Bayonetta did, more than he already got. Within my friend group, everyone agrees Little Mac is not the best by a long shot, but when I play him, people are actually more careful cause I use every ability he has to my advantage. After I learned more of his history, it just made me love playing him even more, and now in the military, my colleagues got a new perspective after watching me dominate with Little Mac against opponents who played characters like Ness, K. Rool, Ganondorf, Mega Man, and even Zelda, and when the DLC characters came out: Pyra/Mythra, Sora, Min Min, and Sephiroth. Despite them being leagues above Little Mac in many ways, being able to strike fear and have people back off with who would normally have no issue with Little Mac is satisfying. In short, Little Mac is badass and people who hated him in Smash just completely missed his whole purpose and play style. It just came naturally to me, and he's still my favorite character, besides K. Rool now too

sorry to say, but he is whie peanut is godly and I enjoy watching him it doesn't mean the character is good compared to the others, for example tweek is better than esam, yet Pikachu is better than diddy kong, he has an insane ground game and a DLC level comeback mechanic but the fact that is aerials are horrible and his recovery is abysmal at best really just ruins his gameplay

The Famicom is actually older than Punch-Out!!. The Famicom came out in July 1983 whereas the arcade version of Punch-Out!! was released in December of that year.
Honestly, I adore Little Mac. I tried with the competitive scene for a little bit with 4 and ultimate, but I remember playing as him once and feeling such a rush of playing a character with many flaws and coming out on top after so much hardship. Its quite a shame that so many people don't realize that Little Mac, like many of the fighters in Punch Out!!, is a gimmicky character. Try and approach him in his own game, like the casual community did, and you'll find that he's a powerhouse, which led to people saying that he's too good. Figure out and exploit his weaknesses, like the competitive community did, and you'll find that he's somewhat of a pushover, which led to people saying that he's too bad. Still, the idea of the underdog story is a time-told classic, and I adore every second I spend playing Mac. I think I'll be a Little Mac player until the day I die.
I have a such soft spot for Little Mac and his series mostly because I'm short, but also because he doesn't stop training and pursues his goal to become a champion, despite his age and height, that's a determined sportsman! I find it inspiring even if boxing is not really in my interest.

Man, this just upsets me lol. I remember back when I was younger I used to rent Punch Out for the Wii from Blockbuster back when that was a thing, so when I heard that he was getting into Smash 4, that had to be the most excited I got for a character inclusion since like, Sonic got in Brawl. I definitely like to play him in game so it's not disappointing on that front, but to see a character and franchise I love so much have so many people turn a blind eye to solely because he's bad in competitive Smash, it's just... unfortunate.

Little Mac's smash playstyle perfectly represents that of his actual games, if you just try spamming attacks then you're gonna get racked real fast, you have to use speed and percision to dodge attacks while still staying in a close enough spot to punish, and use openings in the enemies playstyle to do good damage
Don't worry he'll get another good remake this decade... and maybe an aerial move.

been a mac main since DAY 1, always loved the fact that his underdog thematic works through gameplay, he is by far the best comeback character (when on last stock) because everyone gets cocky and underestimates what you can really do, I've gotten to elite smash un ultimate with mac only, and in sm4sh (granted i was on 3ds) I could consistently win with the character, gotta play him like his game/a real boxer.

Little Mac may not get much love in Smash or even his own series at times but at least he's been given plenty here with this spectacular video showcasing his history. When Next Level Games was purchased, my immediate thought was hopes for a new Punch-Out game... though it'll be weird to play the game without the Balance Board; it's how I always played Punch-Out Wii.
Poor guy, he always gets the short end of the stick by a lot of people. Yet he is the prime example of an underdog that will keep fighter no matter what.
It's sad that Mac was hated by the Smash fans! I like this character; despite his small size the teenager is brave and perseverant! I admire his courage :D Also, it's impressive to see a tiny guy like him beating thousands of muscled mans who are faster and stronger than him! Mac was not the only character who's hard to control| use in Smash. I got the one on my Wii and ALWAYS had a hard time with: Snake cause i can't aim with his missiles, Bowser cause he's slow and it's hard to jump with him, Olimar cause i don't understand how to properly uses the Pikmins, Ness and Luca cause i can't bounced back on the stage if i'm ejected. Every time i try to practice with thoses characters, it's difficult! It doesn't make me hate them :) I had fun with my sister even if using them is hard!
As someone who mainly uses Lucas, i agree with the mentality of characters who are meant to be played in an unique way to win, you don't need a character that feels the exact same as Mario or something, the fact that you loose with some of these characters merely means you ain't playing their playstyle, it doesn't mean the character itself is bad, it just means that they're supposed to be played in a different way

The irony of Little Mac is his arc is no different than any real boxer. They often have tragic lives. Sometimes pre, during, and post career.
I actually really enjoy using Little Mac in Smash. He's one of my favorite fighters to play as because he feels pretty balanced.

I love boxing as a sport and Little Mac being a boxer and going toe-to-toe with people who are gods, demons, demon slayers, and even god slayers, will always be my favorite thing while playing him.
I have to 100% disagree with the guy who says "Mac is boring and he encourages you to play boring" I can't play Mac because I'm bad. But watching People who know how to play him is always exciting to me. I don't like 7 minute games where 6 minutes is spent trying to safely land hits in neutral. Mac encourages you to "Get in there." To me that is way better to watch than a Ness, Link, or Villager who camps projectiles the whole time.

Fun fact as a person who plays little mac use him like your pichu don't get hit cause your hp needs to stay high so he doesn't get launched . His air is literaly 1 move easy to dodge. You can do massive damage and if you can leverage a stock can work but you need need the floor a unstraight battleground. Just jump off now he needs to dash attack and poke at your enemy
