  • Here is the basic technique for making a basic gill net, which has a myriad of uses from netting fish and game to making a hammock or many other applications
    Detailed explanations of this can be found in literary form in the SAS survival handbook by John Lofty Wiseman (In our opionion one of the best survival books out there.)

    Thank you so much for this! Our son has a small basketball goal with a 12" diameter. When the net wore out, we could not find one to fit. After finding your video, we purchased four pairs of white shoelaces and tied our own. Your video was the key piece. Thanks!

    LOL camera operator falling asleep on the job?
    Seriously though, thank you for this video. It’s very straightforward and simple, and thanks to you I’ve just learned how to make a gill net in under 10 minutes. 😀

    Who is here because Alone? Can anyone give some insight as to how wide/big the net openings should be?

      It depends on what size your prey is…Smaller fish…2 inch etc, large salmon 5-6 inch etc….you can make em any size you want providing you have enough material

    Fascinating technique. It seems very time consuming, and in a survival situation, I don't know whether food would be enough of a priority for me to spend the calories making this net. But it might make a nice craft hobby, regardless. Thanks for sharing the technique.

    Thanks guys... I agree I think this is more of a longterm wildernes living or even hobby skill than it is a survival technique due to time, and the amoutn of cordage needed..Thanks for commenting.

    @MrKal911 Thanks,
    this is a simple technique for a quicky type net, for anything that will stand the test of time, there are better but more time consuming methods.
    I'm going to say 15 ft for length by 13 for width.. as a rough estimate..
    Thanks again for watching.

    it can be made smaller by bplacing the vertical strands closer together.. However for a golf net there are better techniques.. like using a net needle will make for a tighter weave.

    • @Highnz57
      @Highnz57 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe so. when set in the right spot. like situations with less restrictions as in a survival situation. stringing your run across a bottleneck or something like that

    Hi there , i need your advice for the best possible twine to use when making a net that will last me a very long time , i plan to make my self a keeper net = its what you place fish in while your fishing with the intent to release back into the water at the end of the day , also i will be making a very large landing net , it will also be used to scoop up anything up to a 25 kilo fish , there is so called twine made in India and China , some of the stuff is called polypropylene , some polyethylene and some simply nylon , i will not be looking at monofilament because it is basically fishing line and i know it has a small lifespan , any advice will be at the very least a start because i know nothing about netting materials etc , thank you for your time and your answer

      Hey Lenny Thanks for watching! Tarred bank line is worth looking into, It comes in different tensile strengths and has replaced paracord for most of my Buhcraft uses!
