    00:00 Intro and question
    0:09 This is a common EMERGENCY. Get veterinary assistance right away.
    00:17 It can be fatal if left untreated. Don't wait too long to see a vet!
    00:42 Most rat poisons are anticoagulant poisons (cause bleeding by interfering with blood clotting)
    01:07 Prevention is best- avoid poisons altogether. They must be kept out of reach of pets and children.
    01:24 Poison looks like food to animals and toddlers. Thee are many children who also become poisoned every year.
    01:35 If it does happen: it is an emergency. See a vet right away or call ASPCA Animal Poison Control: 18884264435
    01:55 You vet will typically induce vomiting right away, and then give the antidote.
    02:23 Some of the newer poisons work by different mechanisms and so need to be treated differently.
    02:28 Rodent poisons are very dangerous for wildlife, especially eagles, owls and other birds of prey.
    03:02 THIS IS PREVENTABLE- use alternative to poison, be aware
    03:24 if you dog finds poison, get them to an emergency vet right away.

    3 BEST PIECES OF ADVICE FROM THE EMERGENCY VET THAT COULD SAVE YOUR PET'S LIFE
    1) DON'T WAIT TOO LONG TO GET HELP! If you wait too long, it could be too late. This is especially true for concerns such as laboured breathing, pale gums and weakness. You know your pet best, so if you are worried or concerned, "when in doubt, check it out!"
    2) PREVENT THE PREVENTABLE. Learn as much as possible about dangers that face your pet, such as household poisons, seemingly harmless objects (like toys, clothing, garbage and rocks), other animals, and vehicles. Pets are like toddlers and they need a responsible adult/babysitter to protect them from danger. Puppies and kittens need to start their vaccines at ~8 WEEKS (and they need boosters too!) to protect them from deadly diseases.
    3) BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST CASE SCENARIO. Have a plan in place, know your nearest emergency clinic, have the ASPCA phone number on speed dial. Know basic first aid training and CPR. But MOST IMPORTANTLY, BE FINANCIALLY PREPARED. The cost of medical treatment in an emergency, and the owners' ability to pay for it, is probably the most important factor that determines whether a pet will receive the medical care it needs. The best way to protect yourself is to have good medical insurance for your pet. Do your research.

    I came home to find my dog, a three years old Dalmatian, dead. No signs of bleeding nor injury. I suspect he's been poisoned. My other dog was foaming but fortunately, he vomited it out and is fine. It all happened within less than 1 hour and a half, while we were gone. My dogs stay outside in the yard. There was nothing I could do to save my boy. He was already gone when I reached home. I'm still grieving his death.

      @Little Dreamer, I am so sorry for your loss. So sudden and tragic. It is so hard not having answers. Intentional poisonings are pretty rare (in most cases there is another cause, like underlying heart disease- Dalmations are very prone to a genetic heart condition called DCM), but they do happen. There are also many poisonous household substance and plants , so make sure that you check for all of those (use the ASPCA animal poison control website as a guide) just in case the danger is still out there. If you are looking for answers, you can have a post-mortem exam performed- you won't always get the answers you are looking for, but in many cases you will. Sending you our biggest condolences. Hang in there. -Dr. Lopez

    My dog ate half a block of Tom cat rat poison.
    Within an hour of him eating it he vomited.
    I called the number on the back of the bag and the guy who answered said he’s a vet. And since my dog vomited and according to he’s weight and the amount he Consumed he said he should be okay. half a block, 7 month old frenchie. 22 LBS). Will he really be okay ??? Thanks

    • @TwinTreesVet
      @TwinTreesVet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Fransisco Gomez, Even when we are successful at inducing vomiting, I usually start these patients on the antidote for anticoagulant rodenticides (Vitamin K1), and continue to give it daily for at least 3 weeks. Some of the longer-acting rodent poisons can remain in the body for 6 weeks or longer, so it is best to check a blood clotting time (PT) 24-48 hours after the last dose just to make sure that it is safe to stop the medication. I hope the little guy is OK:) Thank you for visiting our channel and have a lovely day! -Dr. Lopez

      @TwinTreesVet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Drey Cabautan- do you mean he bit a rat or the rat poison ☠️? Dogs, cats and wildlife actually can get poisoned if they eat a rat that has poison in its body. It is really sad- I see poisons outside so many businesses, but I think people don’t realize that this is also killing eagles 🦅 , owls🦉, and other wildlife. Rats 🐀 themselves can carry diseases- everything from the bubonic plague (caused by a type of bacteria called yersinia pestis) to hantavirus and leptospirosis and many more. At the end of the day, we always say: “when in doubt, check it out. If you are worried or concerned, don’t wait too long to have your pet evaluated). I don’t usually see a lot of sneezing after a dog is exposed to a rat- it could be a sign of an allergy or early viral infection, or there could be something completely different going on. Dogs can also get nasal mites, but these aren’t usually transmitted by rats. Thank you for your question:) have a lovely day!

    Hi, my dog ate a rat poison and can i ask is gum bleeding is a symptom of eating a rat poison because my dog's gum is bleeding it started yesterday

    • @TwinTreesVet
      @TwinTreesVet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Satou Kazuma, yes that can be a sign of rat poisoning. Many poisons work by causing the patient to bleed to death (by inhibiting the blood clotting system). That is an emergency and you need to take him to an emergency hospital right away so that they can check the blood clotting times. Your dog might need a blood/plasma transfusion if the clotting times are prolonged. This is why a dog should see a vet immediately after exposure to rat poison- because there is an antidote that can prevent bleeding if it is given right away. Please do not wait too long, and please ensure to remind all of your friends that poisons are not to be left where they can be accessed by pets and children. Good luck!

      Manasa Devi I am so sorry- what a sad story. That must have been heartbreaking to watch. This is why I think we need to help people understand why using poisons ☠️ to kill animals needs to stop. Poisons are often ingested by animals that the poison was not intended for (like pets, wildlife such as owls🦉 & eagles 🦅, sometimes even children, and sadly, your sweet pig). Also, even for a mouse it is a slow and painful death filled with suffering. There are many humane alternatives to poisons, so there is really no need for them. Thank you for sharing your story and may your sweet little pig rest in peace ❤️

      Manasa Devi, don’t blame yourself. Just help us save more innocent animals from being poisoned by telling your friends and family not to use poisons - and to use a humane alternative (like a humane trap) instead. Maybe you couldn’t save the pig, but now that you know about this you can help to save many other animals.🙏

      @ the sologamer2323 What kind of rat poison was it? Did you call the animal poison control or regular poison control? What do you mean they said to wait? If your puppy really ate rat poison that is an emergency and you should see your vet right away. Toxicity depends on the type of poison and how much your puppy ingested relative to the puppy's body weight, but if your puppy ingested a toxic dose of rat poison and that goes untreated (without the antidote) then your puppy could die. @@TwinTreesVet antidote Name Please...

    • @TwinTreesVet
      @TwinTreesVet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ChandraKiran Sahu It depends on the poison. The antidote to anticoagulant rodent poisons (warfarin, brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difethiolone, and many others) is Vitamin K1. It must be given daily until the poison is out of the body (can be 3-6 weeks even longer). Many of the other poisons do not have antidotes. Prevention is truly the best strategy. I do not recommend that anyone use poisons because they are just too dangerous and commonly affect non-target animals and children. There are many alternatives to poisons that are safer and more effective. Thank you for your question. -Dr. Lopez

  • @BansheeBaby
    @BansheeBaby 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm not too sure if my dog ate rat poison, although I'm pretty sure he chewed on a dead rat that ate the poison. He has not been acting himself and I noticed it almost instantly after he came back inside. Maybe 30 minutes had passed since he was let out. A few days went by and he wasn't getting better so we bought him Vitamin K-1 and it seems to have worked a bit as he is trotting around and eating (in small portions) again. We don't really have the money for a Vet at the moment as we just had medical bills to pay from a surgery I had. Should we still consult with a veterinarian even if we are seeing improvements?

    • @BansheeBaby
      @BansheeBaby 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's also very likely he chewed on the dead rat earlier than what I might have thought!

    • @TwinTreesVet
      @TwinTreesVet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Banshee Baby do you know what kind of poison it was? For anticoagulant (warfarin-type) rat poisons Vitamin K1 is the antidote (3-5 mg per kg per day) some of the newer poisons are longer acting so for those treatment may be needed for as long as 6 weeks. In an ideal world it is always best to have your pet checked by a vet, especially when there are concerns like poison ☠️ ingestion, or of he is not continually improving fully or getting worse. There’s always the possibility that there could be something completely different going on that has nothing to do with rat poison. Sorry to hear about this and wishing you guys the best. On more reason we should all try to use safer alternatives to poisons for rodent control. -Dr. Lopez

      @Javaid Ghafoor .... I am not 100% sure if I understand you correctly. Do you mean that there are thousands of street *dogs*? The best way to reduce the number of street dogs is to enlist the help of an international or local animal welfare society to help gather, spay/neuter, and re-home the street dogs (so that their populations do not continue to multiply). If you are asking whether rat poison is a good way to kill the street dogs... I do not think that would be a humane or lasting solution to the problem. Please respond to help clarify that.
      With respect to rat poisons: There are many types of rodent poisons (and they are all treated differently)- the most common rodent poisons we see are anticoagulant/warfarin-like poisons, which ~48 hours after ingestion, will cause the blood to be unable to clot, eventually resulting in death by uncontrolled, spontaneous bleeding. There are many types of anticoagulant rat poisons (warfarin, pindone, coumafuryl, coumachlor, isovaleryl indanedione, brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difethiolone).
      Other types of rodent poisons can include: bromethalin, cholecalciferol, zinc phosphide, and strychnine (strychnine is very rare here as it has been outlawed, but other parts of the world may still have access to this poison.
      You can visit this website to learn more about rodent poisons (the first chapter is an overview, and then the chapters listed below discuss each specific type of poison):

      @TwinTreesVet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jaleel Jack if you are dealing with anticoagulant rat poisons, then usually they will be ok if you act swiftly, induce vomiting, and begin the antidote (vitamin K1) right away. The formula of Vitamin K1 that we have here is usually given at 3-5 mg/kg/day for at least 3-4 weeks. Some new rat poisons are long-acting, meaning that they can stay in your pets system for 6 weeks or longer, so it is important to know exactly what kind of poison you are dealing with so you know how long to continue treatment (sometimes 6 weeks or longer). It is really important to check a blood clotting time (PT) 24 hours after stopping the vitamin K1, and if the clotting time is still prolonged then you want to continue treatment. Best of luck!

    • @TwinTreesVet
      @TwinTreesVet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jallel Jack keep up the good work. Make sure you don't stop the Vitamin K1 too early. Find out if the poison you had was a long-acting or short-acting one, so you know the appropriate timeframe to continue giving vitamin K1 -Dr. Lopez

    • @TwinTreesVet
      @TwinTreesVet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Clowoh Sorry this happened to your pup! This probably isn't what you want to hear, but for some situations there is really no DIY substitute for medical care, and poison ingestion is one of those. From the standpoint of your dog's best interest, it is hard for me to recommend anything other than seeing an emergency vet. It really depends on the poison that was ingested, but with anticoagulant rodent poisons, the antidote is Vitamin K1 (available with a prescription only- it is given at 3-5 mg/kg every 24 hours for at least 30 days, and then we check the blood clotting times before discontinuing it completely), but that said, treatment should be started immediately. If you wait 3 days, then it is likely that the antidote alone will not be enough, and often those pets need plasma and blood transfusions. Some of the other poisons need other treatments. With poisons, the longer you wait, the more expensive it gets, so it is best to get medical attention early (you may need to borrow the funds from a friend/family member/ or there are also financing companies for pet emergencies like care credit) rather than waiting until it becomes a catastrophic situation. @TwinTreesVet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @kuku krunch Oh no :( That is a real emergency. So sorry to hear this- please see if you can find a 24h emergency vet. Many places make exceptions for emergencies. Bleeding disorders caused by rat poison usually require fresh frozen plasma transfusions (to restore the clotting factors), and sometimes blood transfusions (to restore the red blood cells). If you intervene before abnormal bleeding starts, then there is an antidote to the anticoagulant rat poisons (Vitamin K actually). But it takes the body time to make new clotting factors, so by the time abnormal bleeding is present, you will need a plasma transfusion to replace clotting factors or it can be fatal. That said, there are other bleeding disorders that can cause nose bleeds- like thrombocytopenia (not enough platelets). That is also an emergency but it is treated a little bit differently. Where do you live? I can see if these services are available there 🙏 We need to ban rodent poisons it is too sad to always have this happening to pets and wildlife.

      Unlikely to help but wouldn’t hurt. If you have no other options and can get vitamin K supplement the dose is 5 mg per kg orally every 24 hours. If it is anticoagulant rat poison for at least 30 days to help the body make new clotting factors. In my experience Dogs bleeding from anti-coagulant rat poison we usually die without plasma transfusion, but you might as well start vitamin K ASAP if you can.

      Rodent poison ingestion IS AN EMERGENCY. With anticoagulant rat poisons, the symptoms of bleeding don't start until after 48 hours, and by then it is too late. You need to see a vet immediately if your dog ate rat poison.
      It is your responsibility to a) keep you pet safe from dangers like poisons, and b) to get them medical care in a timely manner when a problem (like a poisoning) does happen. Sorry to tell you this, but you already dropped the ball once (by not protecting her from the poison); please don't drop the ball a second time. Call the vet NOW (preferably yesterday).
      Thanks for your comment. Let's see better work next time. We are all on the same team working toward the best interest of the patient. Let's see some hustle:)

    • @TwinTreesVet
      @TwinTreesVet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jeanuel Mae Ramos, pets that have ingested anticoagulant rat poisons can be treated with an antidote as long as you don’t wait too long to get help! This is exactly why it is so important that rodent poisons be kept where they cannot be accessed by pets and children. In many places that is the law. Please don’t wait too long to see a veterinarian. If your dog ingested a warfarin- type poison and you wait longer than 24-48 hours to get your dog to the vet for the antidote, your dog could start to bleed to death. Make sure you show your vet the label on the poison. Personally, I think poisons need to be illegal because, as you can see, this happens way too often. Instead of being sad about what you can’t change, take the necessary steps to address the problem NOW, before it is too late. Best of luck ❤️

      GB Patingan, aw sorry that happened! Dog bites hurt so much! I am glad you got good advice to go to the doctor👍 Rabies is a virus that is very rare in pets in Canada and the United Stated because it is against the law to not vaccinate pets against rabies. The most common carriers of rabies here are wildlife (like bats, skunks and raccoons). Rabies is a rapidly fatal disease (to both pets and people), and so it is really important to not skip that vaccine. Here in Canada, it would be extremely rare for a person to get rabies from a dog bite, but they can get infected very easily so it is always important to see a doctor after being bitten by an animal. @yesterday 89 I have seen dogs that were poisoned at old cabins where the poisons had been left out many, many years before. With the anticoagulant rat poison so you don’t see any symptoms for up to two days later, and by then it is too late because the bleeding has already started. The most important thing is to find out what kind of poison it is. It also matters how much they ingested, but in my experience you really can’t tell until you induce vomiting. You should definitely get to the vet ASAP to be on the safe side. I don’t take poisons lately at all because so many pets die from eating them when they don’t get help early enough. There is an antidote for certain rat poisons but it should be started as soon as possible. I’ve had quite a few dogs where people didn’t think that they had actually eaten any and they just had it in their mouth, and then when we induced vomiting we found out that they actually had eaten quite a lot of it when nobody was looking. I hope that helps good luck! - Dr. Lopez

      @Dillu Siwakoti It all depends on the type of poison ingested, the amount ingested (per kg) and the time that has elapsed. Any time a dog eats rat poison- that is an emergency, and you need to contact your nearest veterinarian or animal poison control hotline for instructions. Provide the information from the label of the poison so that your vet can help you best (not all poisons are the same). It is best if you act right away.
      Preventing emergencies is always better than responding to them, so please make sure that household poisons (like rodent poisons, human medications, chemicals like ethylene glycol, and foods like raisins, grapes, chocolate and xylitol/artificial sweetener) are kept out of reach of pets.

If a toxic dose is ingested, the patient can begin to lose the ability for the blood to clot within 48 hours. It is best to handle rodenticide intoxications right away, so that you can induce vomiting (to minimize the amount absorbed) and get the antidote on board before any changes occur to the blood clotting system. What happens if we don’t have the money

    • @TwinTreesVet
      @TwinTreesVet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Lona Bibbs, That is a little bit of a tricky question. What would you say to someone who had a dog but didn't have enough money to feed it every day? The problem with medical care for pets is that a lot of people don't realize a) how incredibly expensive it is-especially in an emergency situation, and especially if you don't have good medical insurance for your pet, and b) that being able to provide medical care to a sick or injured pet is no different from other responsibilities like making sure that you can afford to feed the little baby, that you have created a safe environment for him, and that you have enough time to give him attention, love and exercise.
      This is going to be hard to hear, but allowing a pet to suffer because an owner is unwilling or unable to provide medical care is actually called medical neglect, and neglect is a type of animal abuse. If you are in a situation where your pet is suffering but you cannot provide for his medical care, the best thing to do is to contact an animal rescue organization (such as the SPCA or a breed rescue). Sometimes they have the ability to take over the care of the little guy ensure that it receives the medical care he needs.
      So sorry you are in this situation. It is extremely stressful to be in this kind of dilemma. I know when I got my first dog (when I was 22 years old), I was a broke student and had no idea how much emergency medical care for pets costs. When my dog had an emergency, I was also in this situation and was very scary and stressful.

      Davis’s D.I.Y’s, It is possible for a pet (or another animal, especially eagles and owls), to become poisoned from eating a rodent that was poisoned. That said, there could be something else completely unrelated that is going on. I think the best thing for your dog would be to have the little guy seen by a vet.
      Where are you located? In most places there are still veterinary services available, especially for sick patients. Most vets just have to implement different protocols, like not allowing owners in the building, etc. Do some digging and see if you can find a vet near you that is still seeing patients or offering consultations (try searching:24 hour emergency hospital).
