  • Olly swaps in a phat Maxpeedingrods GT2860 turbo on his 1.6L VW Rabbit diesel. Mini build, test drive, and jawing!! ~also~ Dyno test video inbound (soon).
    This was made possible by Maxpeedingrods!
    Maxpeedingrods manufactures and sells an increadible assortment of universal and model-specific car parts - turbos, coilovers, oil coolers, rods, etc - and ship them rediculously fast. Their products make excellent fodder for custom builds such as this one (& yours too).
    I recently bought a diesel heater from them for my van - it got here in two days :O

    My grandma used to daily a MK1 (It’s actually Diesel Rabbit badged), and I think it’s an 1984 model? It’s 2 door. She passed away years ago, and quit driving in 2019; so it’s been sitting in the garage untouched for a longtime. It has 138,000 original miles, and I think a 1.6L?
    But anyway, love the cinematography, editing and just overall color in the video. Your actual MK1 is super dope and I love the paint too. Definitely will be looking back at this video when, and if I can turbocharge the car and bring it back on the road.

    Love your videos man you’re the reason I just got an 82 rabbit I was wondering where did you get your exhaust manifold from or did you just flip the stock one and cut off the old flange and weld on the one you have now?

      Heyo! Thank you! I modified a stock TD manifold. I welded an extension/flange-conversion to it to accept turbos with a T25 style bolt pattern!

    Make a custom exhaust header with equal length runners to increase the speed of the exhaust gas through the turbo. Dump the wastegate seperate from the downpipe in order to prevent back pressure turbulance on the exhaust flow leaving the turbo. You will have to drill a hole through the down pipe flange and weld in a seperater fin with a seperate dump pipe. Shave the lip down tapered on the intake side of the turbo to prevent intake turbulence, run 2 inch to 2 1/4 inch boost piping to the motor, the smaller piping reduces the time it takes to build boost due to less volume of space to fill up. Throw more fuel down its throat, more fuel at lower rpm creates more cumbustion gasses under cylinder pressure which will create more exhaust flow through the exhaust side of the turbo. I know for sure you will get that turbo to spin alot quicker this way.

    • @OliverFetter
      @OliverFetter  ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have a vw? What size turbo do you run?

    • @vdubsterw2516
      @vdubsterw2516 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @OliverFetter i have 5 different vw's. 2 rabbit pickup trucks running 1.9 liter naturally aspirated swaps. 1 rabbit 4 door that is getting an alh 1.9 swap from a jetta. i have a mk4 gti that i race currently because i live in a no smog county in california i can get away with modifying gassers. The gti is using the stock ko3s running a diode mod at 4 bar fuel pressure. I have built alot of rabbit diesel turbo cars for friends and customers and have tried different size turbos. There are many different things you can do to increase spool up time on bigger turbos with diesel engines but it takes alot of custom engineering to do so. This is what i have found when trying to increase power on the 1.9 and 1.6 diesel engines. As long as your turbo is not a vnt style turbo with electronic n75 control you can isolate the wastegate and increase flow speed with custom built headers. I like watching your videos by the way. Your car is nice little build.

    If you can shove enough fuel in it a gt28 should spool. Use a 12mm pump head if you don't have one already. Play with injection timing, get a spacer for the bottom of the IP timing piston to get more travel tus a wider timing range, more adjustments can be made with different spring rates on the timing piston. run less advanced injection timing at lower rpm and maybe some bigger nozzles. The goal is to raise exost pressure as much and as fast as possible by a lot of extra fuel and some combustion happening in the manifold. It looks like your pump is defueling as the turbo starts to spool up too, mod your governor spring if you haven't already. You'll have even less bottom end power but the turbo should sing on top end. Try a blow off valve to help keep the turbo spooled between shifts. I have a gt25 turbo on a 1Z TDI it wants to fall flat on its face between shifts.

      I have had several turbos on.
      No better match for a vw diesel than a VNT.
      A vnt can make more power at lower boost levels.
      And can make FULL boost in neutral.
      Playing around once I made so much boost in neutral it stalled the engine.
      And when the vanes open it’s like gaining a larger exhaust housing.
      Unless you dislike peak torque at 1800rpm and crazy flow in the top end.
      Oh and they’re $300
      Capable of a real 160whp/275tq
      Reliably.
      And not to mention the tunability.
      I can go from basically having your turbo,
      To having spool like a tiny turbo.
      Seamlessly between.
      Edit: m.th-cam.com/video/fGzIZLhJn8Q/w-d-xo.html
      This is with no intercooler running between 12-15 psi.
      Its capable of 20psi
      And this is with a fully stock governor assembly. And injection pump. Just tuned by me.

      I think the valvetrain is safe to about 5500 rpm, currently running it up to about 4000. Its a guiles pump & is turned up as much as you can before you lose all throttle return/uber-high idle.

    Beautiful rabbit man, one of my rabbits is running pretty rough, and I’m fairly new to the rabbit scene so I’m not entirely sure but it’s shooting white smoke and sounds like a miss fire and my guess is the Injection pump timing, I was just wondering what you thought it could be, I don’t have nor can I find a dial indicator for sale for the injection pump so I can’t even check if it’s that

    • @OliverFetter
      @OliverFetter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hm! Could be a few different things. Does it smoke when it warms up? Could be a stuck injector, could be bad pump timing - could be just bad timing overall (valves, pump, pistons!). Personally I'd start with retiming the whole thing, then you know you have a baseline. You can get a cheapo dial indicator from ebay and then buy an adapter tube that fits the threads of the pump!

    • @mocks8162
      @mocks8162 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OliverFetter yeah it smokes as soon as you start up and doesn’t go away, I’ll try that cheapo dial indicator like you said, if that doesn’t work I’ll just start from fresh and redo it all. Thank you my man 🙏 love your rabbit

    • @fastinradfordable
      @fastinradfordable 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with Oliver.
      Smoking is more likely to be from injector pissing fuel.
      Remove the oil cap while running.
      If some smoke comes out it’s ok.
      If lots of smoke comes out your bottom ends shot

      I have a TD manifold that I've extended/adapted to fit a T25 flange - this mates up great with a lot of smaller turbos. I've found the GT2052 is a great size with adequate fueling.

    GT2860 is a fatass for that engine! Fun video!! Take care of that motor, those 1.6 diesels are lovely, economical and indestructible if you use them properly. Did you guys get the old Audis with those engines in the US?

      @@OliverFetter They're great cars. I've had 3x Audi 80 B3 and 1x Audi 80 B4. Being the dumb unappreciative kid I was and having bought them for laughable money, I scrapped one B3 (1.8S) and the B4 (1.9TD) for silly reasons (although they were beat to shit by previous owners, they were saveable easily if someone skilled would put like a week of solid effort) and neglected the second B3 (1.8S) a lot because I used it as a spare car constantly and didn't care about it. Obviously it still runs and drives, deciding whether I'll sell it or fix it up. And in May 2023 I got another 80 B3, this time a 1.6TD from 1989, it was the best one I had and I really wanted to take good care of this one, but some moron messed with the radio wiring before me and the car set itself on fire while driving. Rest of car, except for some brake squeak was mint.
      The best thing about those Audis is their rustproofing. Mechanics are unkillable, but many cars from that era are like that or even tougher. These Audis just don't want to rust, here in Poland I'd risk saying they're the most common pre-1990 car still used as a daily driver. Of course they do eventually rust but they're so resistant, it's amazing and I'm no Audi fanboy. They disappear from here because a) they don't pass inspection due to bunch of neglections and they get scrapped, even if they 99% of the time still run and drive and b) they seem to get sold a lot to Ukraine, Belarus and further to Kazakhstan and so on.
      I'm getting another diesel B3 that's for sure.
      Biggest downside nowadays as a daily driver is the small boot, and rear seats don't fold, but at least you get a big (70+L) fuel tank.
      And well, for example while in the US in the late 60's high school kids doing basic jobs were getting a fresh Mustang for their own money, in Poland getting a car was a dream ever for people that were above average in society, any car, even a 2-stroke 30 horsepower Syrena that would snap driveshafts if you touched the throttle in a corner, so any place has it's pros and cons :P
      Also in the 80s here when Eastern Bloc was about to fall, they started to limit monthly purchase of gasoline per person. But not diesel, so if you somehow acquired a diesel car, you were the king of the road because you could actually drive and not sit and look at you car, and diesel engines including VW 1.6D were shoved into everything and anything. :D

    • @OliverFetter
      @OliverFetter  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is SO cool!! Thank you for sharing your experience. I've had an absolutely unexpected amount of input from y'all over seas but I love it. Seems like there's a lot of knowledge & history with these little diesels & I'm stoked to hear it. I'd agree with you on the soundness of the mechanics! I've pushed this engine so hard & it really doesn't care, just keeps chugging. The westy rabbit bodies we got in the US were junk in general. Lots of rattles, lots of rust. I stripped mine down to the metal last summer & spot welded & painted all over to make it last longer

    You need to spend about 4 days learning about turbos, then on the fifth and sixth day, with your quirky enthusiasm, you will get the idea that you can change parts and build a custom turbo that works almost perfectly for your build. The reason why is BC there is no such thing as a perfect turbo...there all always limits

    • @OliverFetter
      @OliverFetter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Quality point Darren. The rub is there aren't many turbos or aftermarket parts that suit 1.6L motors (pls tell me otherwise). I also have definitely used several turbos that just arent at all in the right ball park. I'm self-taught and unfotrunately have to learn some how. In this specific instance MaxpeedingRods sent me this one for free so I gave it a go just for sh*ts and giggles being fairly certain it was way too big.
