    This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos subcompact SUVs. The Seltos and Kona have the same engines, a base 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, 146 horsepower for the Seltos and 147 horsepower for the Kona. Both have 132 lb-ft of torque. The Kona outgoing model used to have a 6-speed automatic transmission, the CVT is new for 2022. The second engine they share is a turbocharged 4-cylinder with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The Seltos has 175 horsepower and the Kona for 2022 has upped the power to 195 horsepower. They both have 195 lb-ft of torque. The 1.6T is only available on the top models of the Seltos and Kona. The Kia Seltos has sharp handling like the Kona but it is bigger and has a taller ride height. It offers a smooth and comfortable ride with the option of FWD or AWD on the base LX trim in Canada. AWD is standard on all trims above the LX model. In the US, it’s a different story, the base model comes standard with AWD but one trim up has standard FWD with the option of AWD for $1500 US. All other trims come standard with AWD. Blind spot collision warning and rear cross traffic alert are standard on the base trim. The Kona AWD gets Independent rear suspension and FWD solid rear axle suspension. In the US, you can add AWD to the 2L engine for $1,500 and in Canada $2,000.. The N Line comes standard with AWD. Additional insulation, new windshield glass has improved the noise, vibration and harshness of the Kona. This crossover is nimble and quick, the extra 20 horsepower for the 1.6T for 2022 makes a big difference, it’s a great city SUV. The 7-speed dual clutch transmission on both adds sportiness to the drive. The Kona offers blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert one up from the base model. The Seltos has a comfortable interior, you sit up and over the dash offering great visibility. It comes standard with heated cloth front seats, an 8” touchscreen, a 3.5” instrument cluster and Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The top two trims get the bigger 10.25” touchscreen and 7” instrument cluster. One up from the base model comes standard with a heated steering wheel, leatherette seats and a leather shifter. The top two trims have heated rear seats, ventilated front seats and a wireless charger. On the top trim is where you’ll find a head-up display and the Bose Premium Sound system. I would just like to point out that in US you get the larger touchscreen one up from the base model. For 2022, the Kona gets a redesigned dashboard and a bigger standard touchscreen going from 7 to 8 inches and wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Some other new changes include, a 10.25 “ digital driver display, a 10.25” touchscreen, a wireless charger and about an inch more second row legroom. The larger screens are standard on the top trim if you add a package for $5600 CAD or $2500 USD. Included in that package is a head-up display, leather seating surfaces with red stitching, a wireless charging pad, ventilated front seats and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Leather seating surfaces are also available in a package added to the Preferred trim. The Kona does not offer heated rear seats and the heated steering wheel is standard one up from the base model just like the Seltos. The Seltos is quite a bit bigger than the Kona, 8 inches longer. They have about the same front legroom but the Seltos offers almost 3.5 inches of extra space in the second row. In overall cargo capacity, the Seltos is the winner offering 17 cubic feet more space and over 7 cubic feet extra behind the second row.

    Seltos has a polished, refined look. The Kona is definitely sportier, however when you add options it gets pricey. Kia' interior gets the win.

    It's a terrible time to buy a car though we did find a dealer with no markups, add-ons OR dealer fees for a 2022 Seltos SX. We couldn't find a similar deal for the Kona. It's been about a month and we love it!

      Where do you live? I've found the opposite. A Kona for MSRP plus regular taxes and fees and a Seltos for markup and regular taxes and fees. If really like to see a dealership for Seltos selling at MSRP plus regular taxes and fees

    Kona handles better and much more fun-to-drive. Seltos is more "appliance" like when it comes to handling department. Here in Vancouver, Hyundai has a much more reputable dealer networks than Kia with those huge automotive groups. Except if Kia offers a better deal, I would take a Hyundai instead.

    I think that the Kona (inside and out) looks more premium (less plastic) and stylish (futuristic headlights). Despite still being ‘a little’ pricey, in my opinion. Further... I could never get used to the KIA’s front end. Thanks for another great comparison video. Cheer!

    The Kia Seltos has been updated in the US for 2022 and has been available here since the summer. It has the larger screen, the digital cluster, and a slightly different front design. Several driver-assisted safety features are now standard. It seems that the Seltos versions sold in India and Canada have some features that have not come to the US as well, like the Heads up display. If you are looking into buying either of these cars in the US, check which features are available. These are popular small SUVs that are difficult to find right now.

    • @andreaspencer9813
      @andreaspencer9813 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing, I find the trims in both the US and Canada to be quite different. I wish they were similar as we have both US and Canadian followers. It would certainly make it easier for us. :) With the chip shortage, it's becoming more and more difficult to buy new or used vehicles.

    Definitely the turbo Kona. went with it in 2020, and would do it again. when on superhighways, or trips, it gives you high mpg, plus power when you need to use it.

    Great video, guys! Thanks for this. I've been looking at both cars as options for my next car purchase and this puts a few things in perspective for me. Your point about the Kona being like a bigger hot hatch and the Seltos being more like a smaller SUV is right on the money. Thanks again!

  • @jazzbeau507

    The slit like eyes/running lights in the Kona looks kind of weird to me; I prefer the Seltos which you said has larger interior and longer. The dash in the Kona is also strange looking like they just put a horizontal I pad in a space they had in the dash.

  • @TalismanPHX
    @TalismanPHX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Definitely the Seltos, its more practical with lots of rear seat space. The Kona's new front styling doesn't appeal to me either and if I wanted a hot hatch.... GTI is the answer.

    • @janoycresnova9156
      @janoycresnova9156 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not everyone needs all that space. I'd pick Kona. Handles much better, faster than Seltos, got latest updates. GTI is much more expensive, has no AWD and sits lower than Kona.

    I'm not sure where you get your figures from, but the factory sticker states the 2.0L Hyundai Kona gets a 35MPG Highway and 30MPG City. Of course driving habits can determine actual figures, but I get 35-40MPG Highway and am averaging 31MPG combined on my Kona driving in Southern California.

    • @tonya804
      @tonya804 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hardly. They pointed out what's better between the two while also point out some things they didn't like. He said he likes the look of the Kona better and they joked about the front of the Seltos looking like it had a unibrow. He also mentioned that Kona's 1.6 puts out higher HP. The fuel economy is better with the Kona as well.
