This is the most reflective I have seen Bird. Wonderful philosophical Bird interview. My favorite basketball player. My brother, sister and I met him several times as kids outside the Hellenic College practices. He always signed our scraps of paper and cards. Having him wish us Merry Christmas December 1989 was such a treat as a kid!

I hated Larry Bird cos he always stopped the sixers, my favorite team back then because of Doc J. Just when I thought the sixers could catch up and win the game, he’d drill baskets that were backbreakers. He just killed em and seemed like he was just trying to annoy sixers fans deliberately. Today, now that I’m wiser, love him. So much respect.

@@paultritle9494 I mean, Doc had some other good players on his team. I'd give Andrew Toney some credit for being a thorn in the Celtic's side. In 83 the Sixers also had Moses, and in 80 Bird had like...Cedric Maxwell? No Parish, no McHale. Some players who were well past their prime that managed to win like 20 something games before Bird showed up. Anyway, Bird had the better head to head record overall versus Doc.

@@riffsthatkill2180 doc had the better head to head in playoffs and regular season against bird before Doc hit his 11th season and was done. Bird had a way better cast with mchale parrish Johnson. If bird and doc were both n their prime Bird wouldn’t have half the playoff success he had

I’ll tell ya this, Bird was the best white guy to ever play basketball, and better than all but about 4 black dudes. He is no doubt in the top 5 all time. To say he wouldn’t make top 10 you’re either ignorant of basketball history or a racist , butt hurt black person.

Hockey is trying to fight the "assigned agenda" roles that are being put upon them by people who aren't on the "athletics" end of sports ,instead they're on the marketing and or bureaucratic side of sports, and that side shouldn't even be seen ,much less making itself equal to the sport itself. I'm glad Larry pushed back on the white men can't jump cliche that Patrick was selling, in a small way------"I used to be able to jump a little bit".......he had slightly below average leaps I'd say, early on. Maybe 2 feet worth, plus he's 6'8" with long arms, which means most people can't block you unless they get a good angle.

Bird was never the best player, he wasn't the highest jumper, he didn't make the fancy dunks. He is the smartest player, imo, to ever play basketball. He could read the court, he knew where his teammates were on the floor, if you weren't looking closely, you would miss his unbelievable passes, and wonder, how in he'll did he throw that pass while looking in the opposite direction. Bird also never lost his small home town family upbringing. He doesn't have a fleet of super car's. He is just an old country boy, who plays his ass off. And, maybe now, a rich old country boy, who still has most of his money.

Bird received 67% of all MVP votes cast for a 9 year period.
Second in the league for 3 consecutive years before being voted The Most valuable player for 3 consecutive years.
Followed by a third behind Magic and Jordan, and another second.
