There are so many “what would have been without the injuries” stories in professional sports. Bird achieved so much, it’s hard to imagine how much more he could have done without the back problems. He is my all time favorite player

Yep, and injuries is part of the game they play. Your point is well taken. You could say " if we scored more points, if such and such played like the year before", the game, the outcomes are a combination of a lot of things, in the end some went your way, some did not. Bird said he should have retired as early as '88. His very best years were in his first 8 seasons, he knew that.

He didn’t respond but I guess he probably meant Bird was “a player for the ages.”
I gather calling something or someone “the word” is a compliment, but I’m not sure. It strikes me as probably deriving from biblical passages referring to the opening of Genesis and the timeless presence of Jesus. “Word” is also a slang greeting and a way of expressing agreement. So if you say a person is “of all ages” and “the word” you’re at least extolling the person’s virtues and maybe even likening the person to God.
Anyway, nine people gave this affirmation a thumbs-up, so it must have made sense to them.

Name another player that could shoot, pass, rebound, block, steal, and just get into a player's head to take them out of their game like Bird. You can't. Period. Now add his toughness, and the tough, physical era he played in.
