Towa played Splatoon 2 the other day (3/24/2022) and Mio joined in partway through, making it a guerilla collab. They had a lot of fun together, though Towa wanted to bring up something to Mio pretty badly. Apparently, someone thought Mio doesn't like Towa, and that's why she's so blunt with her. Expand for translator's notes.
0:00 - Towa says "ぶっ込んだ" here. This phrase carries the nuance of talking about something that people typically wouldn't talk about in a given situation. In a way, it can be like saying "Can I be blunt with you?" but I didn't want to use the word "blunt" because Mio and Towa already know they can be blunt with each other. It's more that Towa wanted to address a topic that may not be the best thing to discuss on stream. I went with "Can I be real with you?" because it matches that tone, and it fits the way Towa speaks. Towa's the type of person who hears the English phrase "Let's get this dub" and wants to use it immediately lol.
0:19 - Kinda funny that Towa says "Oogami" here. Reminds me of Korone lol.
0:25 - While in many cultures, being blunt is not something that's seen as very polite, Japanese culture is even more particular about the boundaries of when you should and should not be blunt. So to the person's defense, being very blunt with someone can be seen as like... being curt with someone. But I mean, friends take jabs at each other, so yeah lol.
0:53 - Towa brings up an interesting point about Mio- she is very rarely that blunt with the people around her. Many people have the image of Mio being a very kind, nice person (and she is). However, she also has a side to her that fires off sharp retorts and quick witted jabs. When she's with her friends, she's not afraid to take some shots at people. However, Mio will NEVER do this to people who aren't comfortable with her. Any time you see her with new members or people she doesn't frequently interact with, you can tell she's usually more reserved.
There are also some members, like Okayu and Ayame, who she prefers to just dote over instead of necessarily doing any sharp retorts with. But yeah, some examples of "sassy Mio" can be seen when she's with Subaru and Korone. During the 2 hour SMOK talk stream, she bluntly asked Korone what she meant by "Subaru having a lot of flaws," and Mio likes teasing Subaru in general. When Subaru asked Mio for help in learning Monster Hunter, she infamously told her to "first, get off your dog" in a pretty matter-of-fact manner that got a lot of people laughing, while Subaru joked that Mio should be nicer to her. On top of these parts of Mio's personality, she's also a realist, and also an empathetic person who can easily be moved to tears. Despite often being seen as someone who has their shit together, Mio can be oddly air headed too.
1:47 - Just for clarity's sake in case someone somehow didn't get the joke: they mean they aren't friends as in Nintendo Switch registered friends. Not too surprising considering the only game they've both played together before is Mario Kart.
2:34 - After this turn of events, the chat started joking around saying "Mio and Towa really don't get along! Maybe they were just faking friendship for business all along!" That said, I know that is a legitimate worry some people have, since well, let's be real, hololive does not benefit from having internal drama among the talents going public, so there's a very real chance that some people aren't as friendly with each other behind the scenes. That said, if they constantly collab with each other, show up in each other's streams and even do guerilla collabs, I think it's an unfounded fear.
3:01 - Mio originally adds だけ in this line, as in to say she "only" gets irritated during Splatoon and Mahjong. I left this out because she has clicked her tongue during Mario Kart too. Also, fun note, "tongue clicks" are often brushed over by saying "I didn't click my tongue! I was just... blowing kisses!" So if you ever see people saying 投げキス or things like that, it may be them hiding the fact they got mad for a sec.
Also an overall note: Mio just so happens to be speaking with a bit more of a reserved tone than her usual voice for solo streams. She's usually more energetic and peppy, but here she seems to be a bit more laid back, and using less of a "streamer voice," so to speak. She still sounds pretty close to how she usually sounds though, just lower.

Mio has said a lot of times that she enjoys spending time with Towa, since to her, Towa makes no sense, she always says and does things at random and that for Mio is incredibly fun, Towa is also more flirty with Mio compared to how she treats the other holo girls, saying several times that if she could date someone from hololive it would be Mio.
