      Not for motorbikes ... they are not very hungry in petrol, just 5 to 7L/100km for the most powerfull bikes

      I dont agree because of how many people would never switch simply because of sound. The only thing i think that would cause a big change would be a huge increase in gas prices combined with a much lower price for the electric bike. Personally though, i would love to have one of these.

    No clutch gives the bike instant access to your will. Electric motors gives no vibrations to the handles, very nice! When you get it, its more like hovering the streets!
    When the full size mc hubmotors arrive you will get a REALLY high efficiency!
    ..and as a plus, only dust on the parts when fixing things.

      I saw a 2014 Zero DS on Gumtree with 950km for $9000. Another factor about electric bikes is that at least you don't have to trust that the previous owner changed the oil and filters regularly. Few thousand less and you'll make up the cost difference in long-term savings no problem. Cheap 'fuel', lack of maintenance, cheaper rego.

    Great bike. This is better than every other motobike with a combustion engine. No noise, no air pollution and still a lot of power. Just future style!

  • @Chasmodius
    @Chasmodius 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Believe me: the rest of the driving public really appreciates the lack of awful noise out of these things even more than you might!

    • @WeNeedASaga
      @WeNeedASaga  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chasmodius ha fair enough. in that case, you probably won't be that interested in my latest video - 3mins of just bike sound!

    • @Chasmodius
      @Chasmodius 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not the sound itself that's so bad -- internal combustion engine exhaust noises can be quite pleasing -- it's the volume of those sounds that's so obnoxious and painful. I get that you're all wearing helmets, but how does that not kill your ears?

    • @WeNeedASaga
      @WeNeedASaga  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree dude, sometimes a bike will go by and it's so loud all I can think is "why?". As for the ears, I wear earplugs. It helps with bike noise but also the wind noise at highway speeds. I find I feel much fresher at the end of a ride if I've been wearing earplugs.

    Reason of 20 Gran because of Australian Dollar is weaker than US Dollar. Maybe; you can get solar panels for free power from sunlight. The plus side, with 240 volts with 15 Amp circuit does really help for very decent charging rate. Even 2KW. solar panels plus solar batteries will really help in big time.

    rode the RS model and it has some pep in it.
    what i did notice more than anything was the noise of the tires gripping the road when you corner, accelerate or brake. so your senses start listening to whats happening with the grip on the road than the exhaust note and gearing.
    its a very different feeling.
    i to see this is the future if the prices are lowered.

    It's 2018 right now and I Rode the 2017 models the s 6.5, and the Sr 14 point something and the fxs 9.6 and the rings on the highway isn't good on any of them especially if you're a little bit of throttle happy. But they're great around town very simple and very fun to ride. The S 6.5 is on sale for $12,000 right now and the sr-14 something is on sale for 16 thousand dollars. I'd like to have one but not for my only bike and I really only good for around town and close to town. But they are supposed to be coming out with new or models with longer ranges.

    for a bigger range, unlimited range actually, one could make a battery that you could take out and swap it with a charged one instead of waiting for it to charge, at every station in the world, like any gas station today. i saw a video with a e-bike that had a battery you could take it inside the house for charging, could be something like that.

    Hey thanks for the great video! I'm strongly considering purchasing one of these bikes. I've been building/riding electric bicycles for around a year now and I've really grown fond of the reliability/low maintenance/cheap fuel bill/ and torquey FUN that electric motors offer.
    Off topic - could you please tell me what model those gloves you're wearing in this vid are? They seem like exactly what I've been looking for..
    Thanks again!

      @WeNeedASaga  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And the chap at the shop made a good point to me - you pay more up front, but the low maintenance/no fuel etc that you mention means that over time you recoup some of that up front cost. But regardless of the costs, they're definitely fun :)

    I recognize Prince's Highway and Tempe and Cook's River Bridge. You're in my stomping grounds! I recently had exactly the same issue at the exact same place you get blocked by a truck with other trucks parked on the left. (Grrrr!!)
    I test rode a Zero DS last year in Gosford. I was not really impressed with the acceleration, but I'm used to a Suzuki GS1100E, so probably not a fair comparison. I think it would take me a long time to stop grabbing for the clutch like I did constantly on that ride. My current bike is a Hyosung GT650S, which I love and is also quicker and faster than the Zero, but I'm really not a fan of the characteristics of the V-twin engine, even though it's the most powerful in its class. It's just too much vibration, it doesn't spool up like an inline and it always sounds like it's misfiring compared to the inline 4 I love. In spite of (in my opinion) not really living up to the hype, I'll probably be getting a Zero SR next year when I can afford it. I'm looking forward to the lack of vibration and noise.

    • @WeNeedASaga
      @WeNeedASaga  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I agree, they're not as ballistic as you might expect but it's just so effortless! And we know as battery technology improves these things will only get better. And yeah, the peacefulness is fantastic huh?

  • @Rick_Sanchez_C137_
    @Rick_Sanchez_C137_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    “This thing’s got 90 Newton’s of torque.”
    Does it also have a range of 19,200 rods before needing recharge?
    Is the seat 8 hands high?
    Does it weigh just over 22 stone?
    Does it travel at speeds up to 728 leagues a day(just over .1226 Mach speed)?
    Never mind, since the torque is mentioned but not the angle or length of lever it is a fairly useless number if not comparing to specific bikes with exact same measurements isn’t it?

    • @WeNeedASaga
      @WeNeedASaga  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      interesting! I didn't know that was the case. serious question (not being a jerk) why do manufacturers quote torque figures if they're not comparable between models?

    • @Rick_Sanchez_C137_
      @Rick_Sanchez_C137_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      WeNeedASaga
      They CAN be comparable between models, but ONLY if the other two measurements are the same. Bikes in same class should have SIMILAR measurements and so a simple torque number would be comparable but only approximate since specs between different bikes aren’t exact.......but when all is said and done, bigger numbers sound better (and are) and when talking to the mathematically challenged, 90 is better than 80, and they don’t want to know the equation to do the comparisons between the bikes cause “math hurt head.”
      V8 > V6
      4litre > 3litre
      400 > 350
      4 barrel carb > 2 barrel carb
      All generalizations that if ALL OTHER things are equal, are true....but how often are all other things equal?
      (EDIT). And thanks for not being a jerk, especially since I’d already shot a load of sarcasm all over the video.

    • @WeNeedASaga

      torque is definitely comparable between models. He meant to say 90 Newton-metres of torque. The differences lie in the torque curves of different engines, some produce high torque at low rpms, mid range etc etc

    Hi! I understand what your Saying Sir, but there's still no not enough range of miles or kilometres on a charge and like you said that are too expensive to buy and also how long does a battery last and how much does a carbon footprint does it take to make the batteries and also to make the electric in the first place so are will Realy Saveing on Carbon in the ozone layer! Nice Video.thankyou.

    • @WeNeedASaga
      @WeNeedASaga  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some good points Paul, definitely a debate worth having. At 200k's I think the range is decent, but yes you'd still need to make sure you're near power when the charge runs out. According to Zero, the batteries are expected to last at least 400,000k's, which is obviously much further than most petrol bikes ever travel, so not really a problem.
      Regarding the energy cost to produce the batteries, I have no idea and that's a good question for Zero. I guess the idea is that if we keep refining the method it will get more efficient over time. Zero have been building bikes for 10 years now and whilst not perfect, it's amazing how far they've come already and I reckon they're only going to get better! Good luck to em I say! :)

      what about the possibility of swapping batteries? providing a generic one is produced. Williams F1 engineering produced a battery where the cooling fluid and electric connection were disconnected in an instant. They were invited to make the batteries for Formula E, which at the moment doesn't use swappables, but the technology is there.

      If you ride a rollercoaster, are you offended it doesn't make a loud noise? or does the silence make it more exhilarating? Electric bikes will certainly appeal to a different type of person. Not everybody wants noise/attention.

    That silence will make anyone way more aware of the surroundings, but terrifying for highway riders, might lose some concentration and snooze due to less noise anywhere.

    • @WeNeedASaga

      The awareness of your surroundings is one of the first things I noticed! So different to being on a loud bike...

      But... bro... -loud exhausts save lives- cause bad drivers to panic and be distracted from the road.

    • @draganm7823
      @draganm7823 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its actually the oposite of that, noise brings attention and attention brings caution. Speaking from personal experience the bike I bought came with loud performance pipes and other drivers were more aware than on a quieter bike. Remember that when a bike is behind a car its harder to hear the bike so every extra Db helps. Cheers.

    I want to ride my bike but i left it without winterizing it and now the thing is dead. Have to drain gas and clean carb and all that. I would love an electric bike i could just ride and not worry about fluids and engine maintenance. Plus the idea of being silent is actually appeals because u can be a hooligan and not attract to much attention.

    I have two issues with electric vehicles: 1) Fast charging is offered as a solution for the traditional problem of batteries taking hours to fill, but it can seriously degrade battery performance if done often (although this will improve) and more seriously, 2) electric vehicles are only as 'clean' as what generated the electricity that they run on. Generally, this isn't all that great. A corollary of this is the extra load they place on power grids, presently it's not that big a deal but in the future...

    • @mx-pyro
      @mx-pyro 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      To a degree that holds true, that electric is only as clean as where it's produced... However if compared to say gasoline then it takes 4-6 kilowatt hours just to refine a single gallon. Then that has to be transported at an additional cost and loss of more fuel. Watt for Watt it's simply always more environmentally efficient to use electricity directly for transportation and it would additionally reduce the load on the grid.

    • @anitacoco7542
      @anitacoco7542 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fast charging is available for zero's now. The zero battery can be charged at any level as many times as possible without any loss in performance or longevity. Most electric vehicles are charged at night when demands on the grid are small, in fact it's a great time to charge as the plant generators are running anyways, so it's more efficient to have some load on them.

    • @michor10
      @michor10 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I agree but I don't want to have to stop every 100 miles for two hours. No way.

    • @DanDippity
      @DanDippity 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's also the issue of supply and demand. There's more incentive to further develop cleaner and more efficient production methods as the demand increases.

    • @cros13
      @cros13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are other options. DC rapid charging can give you an 80-90% charge in around 15 minutes. Few bikes with it yet.. only the Italian Energica superbikes have DC right now. Mainly 'cause you need a higher capacity pack to absorb the power that quick. At least here in Ireland we have 50kW DC rapid chargers every 25-30km on pretty much every route. 200-300km on a full pack and you'll only stop every few hours on a road trip... sure you need to stretch your legs anyway....

  • @DavidGriffis
    @DavidGriffis 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great bike if you commute 20 miles or less. If you like taking a weekend cruise and driving more than an hour forget it. If you spend 10k for a bike you should be able to drive it for more than an hour away. Nice for around town. Otherwise it's useless.

    crotch rocket punks would drain the battery in 15 minutes because they like to go fast, and accelerate hard everywhere they go.
    Batteries are great for grandmas scooter.
    So for 15 minutes, you pay $20,000.
    Battery powered vehicles just will never make any sense. It is all emotion and no logic.
