Yes. That's right. The Zero gearing is fixed. If they put a gearbox in it like the Empulse, it means you need a clutch, gearbox, oil and more weight. I prefer Zero's design.
[snicker] It will not "flip you off the back". I own a 2016 S. The torque is limited below 20 mph. My understanding is that earlier models would spin the back tire way too easily. And yeah, I hear you about the seating position. It took some getting used to. You'll also find yourself trying to shift down when you're coming to a stop. It goes away eventually. :) Some things the salesman didn't mention: The Sport mode gives you all the power and dials back the regenerative braking. Eco mode (which really is a "city" mode) limits the torque to 60% and the speed to 70 mph while maximizing the regenerative systems. The Custom mode on the bike is set via the mobile phone app. If you have a mount for your handlebars, the app also acts as a secondary instrument cluster, showing you range remaining, battery temp, charger temp, torque, power, etc. Anyhow, I'm glad you had fun. It's a very different motorcycle than most out there. It's not going to replace internal combustion motorcycles, but it does have its place. I love mine.
Thank you so much for taking us on that ride with you! That was really an excellent review! They definitely need to do something about that seat (!) (worse comes to worse, one could create a custom pad situation over the "tank"). As far as no clutch and the lack of Harley-esque sound - I LOVE it! Like you were sort of saying, to each his own. I Personally, definitely love the electric/quiet quality of the futuristic vibe of almost no sound & no changing of gears - much more "Tron like" :-))
"To me it's just an overpowered scooter". Americans are so stuck in the past. Electric bikes are the future. However I'm not sure if their batteries are from responsible sources.
Robert Barber you are a moron. Gas is cheap in the United States because the federal government heavily subsidizes exploration and drilling. There is nothing free market about the energy industry in the United States, it’s all big government interference in the form of welfare for Exxon Mobil, BP, and Conoco
@@stopchangingmynameyoutube encouragement of exploration is not free market hmmm ok. I just can't understand why ppl have such a love affair with something that requires more upkeep and maintenance. This is where the saying that "Less is More" actually goes into advancement and progression.
It's because you have to plan out all your trips in advance with this bike. Plus you cant go very far. It's made for a very small specific crowd that doesnt drive far at all mainly for city riding. You cant just hop on it and go for a ride without planning ahead in some cases.
I'm glad you did the review and for someone who is obviously NOT a sport bike rider where leaned over, close to the "tank", fully in the wind is the place to be, sorry lounge chairs are for living rooms, you did a great job. Thanks I only have one suggestion you should have tried to hit 100mph
I disagree about the noise to be 'seen'. You can't hear well in a car, especially with a radio. I think being able to be aware yourself is far better for ensuring your safety than relying on all other drivers to be 100% aware, especially with all the texting and driving.
Jared Lapierre I can agree with that. I teach my kids the importance to be a defensive driver. I do believe however, it only takes once for someone to hear me and not squish me on the side of the road to save my life. I stand with my original statement knowing they are both important. :)
yeah that thought doesnt jive with me either. im always 100% aware of what other drivers are doing and control myself accordingly. my life is in my hands not the hand of another
Great honest review. It is a big jump from a regular bike. When I test rode an Empulse I made myself dial my analytical brain back so I could just feel it. If it doesn't make you feel anything might as well take the car.
No, it won't flip you off the back. Now a Gixxer 1000 in 1st gear will do that though. The torque listed for gas bikes is for 6th gear, but lower gears multiply the torque. Since the gearing is fixed on the Zero, the torque, while it is instant is not enough to do wheelies easily. You get much higher torque in many gas bikes in the lower gears.
Dan White the zero s easily has enough torque to flip you, but it's restricted so that you can't. theoretically the electric motors would have max torque from the start, but the limiting reduces the low end for controllability.

@@brandonbariel8279 Arrgh! You are right! They refer to it on zero's site as a "naked Street bike". I made a instant ASSumption and that made a ass of me. I apologise.
Call me a pussy, but I'm afraid of the possibility of going deaf while riding an ICE bike. Seeing there's nothing isolating the rider from the engine/exhaust noise in that case.
Joel Hernández Are you being argumentative or do you have no riding experience? The shape of the bike dictates how much air hits your helmet directly and wind noise varies based on that along with the shape and style of the helmet. There are many kinds of earplugs including the kind I wear intended to cut high frequency noise but allow you to still hear your surroundings. Not all motorcycles have a loud engine or exhaust, in fact most are quiet. There are strict regulations on noise. If people choose to make their motorcycle loud via an exhaust swap then yes hearing damage can happen but I don’t ride loud bikes. There’s a big difference between silent and unbearably loud, with most riders wanting an in between. The right amount of induction and exhaust noise is enjoyable, but like I said in some cases the wind noise can drown all that out anyway. Don’t think earplugs are somehow going to impair you. Remember that deaf people drive and ride. A loud stereo also stops you from hearing your surroundings. Earplugs are a smart thing that many riders don’t consider and end up with hearing loss later in life.
That was very interesting review. I think it's nice concerning the eco side of it but I wouldn't buy one. Great review Dave, you did a wonderful job describing this bike (or what other name you would call it). I agree with you when you said it seems like a over powered scooter. Best to you Dave!
Thanks! I had a difficult time putting words to it. I am glad you were able to understand my line of thinking. I have been curious about those for a while now so I am glad to finally ride one. :)
What's wrong with liking both objectively? I love electrics, but I won't deny their shitty range and basically non existent infrastructure for charging in most parts of the world. There are good and bad things on both, but neither is better than the other since preferences are so subjective.

Not really. It's more like a CVT vehicle from Honda cars. There aren't any transmission gears.

Joel Hernández wind noise is the problem in either case. Unless you have a stupid loud exhaust. You should ride with ear plugs and I do.
So are you saying riding a bike is asking to be deafened no matter what. (Not sold on the idea of wearing earplugs while driving any vehicle).
