Since hitting the 200k sub mark I felt it was only fitting that tonight's teardown include not one but TWO engines in one video!
These two core LS architecture engines were the "worst two" of the last batch of engines that came in... I would tend to agree!
First engine is a 6.2L L94 from a 2013 Yukon Denali. This is a 403HP aluminum block closely related to the LS3, with the addition of VVT, and DOD. The Second engine is a 5.3L LMG, from a 2007-2009 Tahoe/Silverado or other GMT900 chassis. Its an Iron block, 310hp engine.
Both engines suffered major catastrophic failures that were likely preventable, but don't we always say that?
Why do I do this? I own and run a full service salvage business in the Saint Louis Missouri area called Importapart. Part of our business model includes stripping down bad engines and salvaging the good parts to resell. We do not rebuild engines, merely supply parts to those that do!
200k is just mind blowing. I never set out for this, but I am so elated to be here. I can't say thank you all enough.
I really hope you enjoy this double-teardown. As always, I love all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism.
Catch you on the next one!!
    -Eric

I think one of the reasons that you have so many subs is that you read all the comments, even the bad ones. I have also experienced on a personal level, writing to your company and asking a vehicle question… and you answered me. It’s one of my favorite channels and I hope you get 200,000 more subs!

Hope you're doing well. I've been there, and totally agree. My Mom passed a year ago. We knew it was coming for almost a year. At some point, every day, there's nothing left to do. I showed her a few youtube channels, and there were a couple she really liked. We'd watch, and she'd tell me stories of helping her Dad work on a tractor, or whatever. Or laugh about stuff. It was, in it's own way, a good time.

I was a state of Michigan certified master mechanic; I dropped out of that field some years ago and now I work on printing presses and associated equipment. Your videos tell me what a wise decision that was! I won’t lie and say my new occupation is a piece of cake; it isn’t, but I am glad we still have people like you out there, showing us the good, the bad and the ugly.
That 3-cylinder Ford with the “wet” timing belts is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen! At least with most of the engines you’ve torn down here you can see good points to them and your “autopsies” on how and why the engines failed mean a lot. And one thing has become very obvious - you love your line of work! Regardless of what we wrench, MECHANICS FOREVER!!

  • @mariusfrost640
    @mariusfrost640 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Fluid power tech here. The increased width of the oil pump gears will increase displacement. That means more flow for a given input speed. This generally will result in higher pressures, depending on how the pressure is controlled in the circuit. If there is a simple relief doing the pressure control, it will not increase peak pressure significantly unless the valve is saturated, but it will increase operating pressure if the circuit spends most of its time below the relief setpoint. If you normally have 40 PSI, and your relief is set at 60, you might achieve 50 PSI instead. It also has the potential to increase oil temperature.

The meling oil pump is going to be the standard volume pump(potentially higher pressure as well) where the GM one is the higher volume pump change for 07+ DOD engines. Wonder if that 5.3 being a DOD and them putting in a standard volume pump contributed to its demise? I assume they probably did a DOD delete however even though you do not need to change the oil pump when doing so however people do.

You explain things like they are and is easy to understand even if I have. worked in the car business for ten years in the spare part section .

Congratulations on 200k. I have never seen a destroyed wrist pin until now. DOD really sucks, doesn`t it! These videos help relieve the stress of the week. Thanks Eric.

So proud of myself! I don't know jack shit about engines but guessed wrist pin in regards to the piece that hit the floor... you've taught me well

A Double Feature! Next time I'll get popcorn, this was so good. It had mystery (how did this happen), horror (broken wrist pin) comedy (1/2" breaker bar breaking) and action (testing each piston in their bores)! Also an introduction to Variable Missplacemet, an industry first. I see a very bright future for you, Eric!!

I do not know if I mentioned this before, but push rods can be cracked besides bent. Check them by dropping them on the concrete floor. If they ring, like a bell, there ok, otherwise they'll just go clunk! And pitch them.

My ex's 6.2 in her 2011 Yukon Denali had this exact same thing happen. Lost an intake valve seat. Luckily for us, it didn't fall completely out, just partially so the valve wouldn't fully close so we had a dead cylinder. It didn't do any other damage and it happened in our driveway in front of my shop luckily. So I slapped a junkyard rectangle port head on it and we road tripped it 350 miles the next day. I thought it was a freak failure. Interesting to hear that it's not completely uncommon.

You make a great channel thank you. I’m a software engineer by background and there was a time I chose between mechanical engineering and computer science and obviously I didn’t pick engines. I’ve always wondered about the other side and your channel is super informative and practical and just plain interesting. Wishing you every success

Congratulations Erik & Fam on 200,000 Subscribers. Watched last night's dysfunctional Late Live Stream all the way to the end. Your Engine Autopsies are very Entertaining. Keep em coming.
Commercial landscape engines are never over worked, Kohler, B&S Vanguard, Kawaski engines are common on stand on and ride on large deck mowers.

I have had two 5.3 Litre engines , one in a 2008 Silverado that I ran 128,000 miles and it was doing great when I traded it off. The other is a 2016 that I continue to run with 154,000 miles. No issues ever with either one. Neither one ever used oil and I did change the Water Pump on the later one. I do regular maintenance on the latest one and do oil changes every 5K and I replaced plugs and renewed the coolant at 93K. Hope it does not turn into a grenade like these two did.

The 5.3 placed in FWD W Bodies was more famous for shredding trannies.
