Imagine pitching this to Liza Minelli (one of 16 people who have got an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony)) and having her agree. That's an amazing feat. MCR is and has always been fundamental listening.
@@cudahitz yep, she sings the 'and if you could call me a sweetheart, i'd maybe then sing you a song' part and the crying at the end, which was completely improvised on her part!
my chem is theatrical as hell. i love this aesthetic, it feels so big so important. like the whole "black parade" album. this song is about the protagonist of bp "the patient" going to war and writing a letter to his mother. his mother basically rejects him and calls him a monster for all the things he had to do during war. i also reccomend to check out "sleep" or "i never told you what i do for a living". they are from different albums but kinda have similar meaning. and both are just amazing songs. thanks for the reaction!
Theatrical? Good gosh.... This all break Up thing was plan.... Frank kinda confirmed it.....people Who wear dangers Day was having the answer... Frank give cue in almost Every single entreview he had in 2019.... Little shit..... We still love you thought...
World War 1 in specific, the beginning is artillary fire, and key lyrical choices helps point it back to WW1, injuries, smell, general insanity and Shell Shock (PTSD modern-day)
Mama was instantly one of my favs on the album, because it is so non ordinary, so unique and to have Liza Minnelli do vocals on it crazy. And their own parents also.
This song is so ambitious and kind of keeps you off kilter because of the constant tempo and instrumentation changes. It's grown to be one of my favorites because the last three sections are so damn funky and the subject matter is powerful. Side note: The vocals of "Mama" are Liza Minelli.
@@cudahitz When this album came out Gerard had a bit of swagger about this song. He said "We got Liza Minnelli. How you going to top that? Barbara Streisand?" And I do believe that we are all still waiting for you to have Sleep melt your face off. 😉 (Make sure you do a lyric video because there are some buried lyrics that will give you chills.)
The placement of Mama in The Black Parade album is absolutely amazing. It leads into Sleep which is a freaking experience in itself. Highly recommend listening to the album- it's about a man dying from cancer. Each song focuses on an aspect of death and dying- where will he end up? Who will remember him?
@@cudahitz please do a full album reaction. It's gonna be a long video - probably split into 2 or 3 actually - but you're absolutely gonna love that thing. I discovered that album in a reaction video and it changed my life.
Anyone else notice/love the creepy under-tone voice that sings with Gerard about what the war did to his legs and to his tongue? I love how it starts in the left ear transitions to the right when he says he should have been a better son. I also love how the end of the song feels like a sort of Pirate Shanty. So well done! edit: I tend to comment as I'm watching. Yes, Cuda noticed :p
I interpret the raspy voice to be the patient who we know is dying of cancer and I think he's specifically dying of throat cancer, presumably from years of chain smoking. Also the "You should have been (I could have been) a better son!" Is likely a back and forth between the patient and death with the latter scolding the former about how he treated his friends and family and the patient lamenting his behavior.
I stan these... they’re quite underrated. There should be more reactions to these because they’re amazing. Specially listening to both This Is How I Disappear and The Sharpest Lives at the same time since they’re connected.
They're great at mixing in different kinds of sounds into their songs. Like the guitar rifts around 4:30 sound classic hard rock and in the song "Teenagers", they do a guitar solo that sounds super classic country. It's always surprising and impressive.
Please listen to Sleep off Black Parade. Has what I consider to be some of Gerards most emotional screams. I believe the voice recording at the beginning is about the night terrors and sleep paralyisis Gerard was having staying in this old creepy house while they recorded the album. OH and You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison.
Good to see you! "That's weird. I like it though." Yep, same. This song took a long time to grow on me because it's so unorthodox. As usual, I like your analysis. It's nice to hear the opinion of someone who actually knows about music. Oh yeah, AND: Eskimo Callboy - Hypa Hypa
Love songs like this, never boring with all the changes to keep you intrigued, given the theme behind this I like the way it goes into like a drunken sing along between comrades at the end
The lyrics make more since when you know the back story, so the story behind it is that it is a perspective of a soldier who is about to die and he is writing a note to his mom and him and his mom are in a fight because he went to war and the things he did in war
This song is such a bop! I love it so much, its about a someone in war. Their writing a letter to their mother, i like to think its before death but its up to how ever you interpert it.
"Mama" is a musical response to Pink Floyd's concept album "The Wall." For a lot of added context, listen to the following songs from "The Wall:" Mother (obviously) Waiting for the Worms Stop The Trial Then listen to "Mama" again. It will be a completely different experience.
This song is off the album The Black Parade, a concept album and rock opera that is a staple in music for many more years to come. You've reacted to most of the songs off that album which I've just noticed and that's awesome

It's not actually The Patient who goes to war it's actually the leader of the parade nicknamed Pepe
No one is ever quite prepared for this song. I love it. Sleep next?
That is a great way of putting it! I did not expect what I got
