The next few episodes shows them having issues even just as friends (although they do have something great blooming), it would have been probably worse if they became a couple then and there. Episode 9 definitely would have been so much worse of a betrayal if they've been intertwined with each other romantically for far longer, but who knows, it's just my guess.

I’m honestly loving the progression of shows moving from queerbaiting towards real romance. I remember being psyched with Hannibal than they even allowed it to be said explicitly that they were in love with each other, even though there’s no physical kiss. Good Omens got very close but they weren’t really ‘men’ and Neil Gaiman said he didn’t go further just because he wouldn’t be able to ask TPratchett if he’d be OK with it. FINALLY, we get the show that really just goes full on with it, and I couldn’t be happier.
And the fact that Stede isn't putting on the moves is just...ugh. He raises his hand like a gentleman, like he is going to ask Ed to dance. Ugh...my heart.
Look, my interpretation of the red piece of silk: it is LOVE. It represents expensive things, yes, but it is the love that his mother gave him, her love that lives with him, although he hides it under his jacket. He sees it as weakness that must be hidden. His mother also told him that those things are not for him. He shows his love, reluctantly, scuffingly, to Stede, who puts it in a pocket above his heart for everyone to be seen and thinks it suits him. Ed is amazed and surprised that anyone could find him lovely and touches the love in his heart with gentleness for the first time in ages. And when he thinks Stede has abandoned him, he lets go of the love and only the sadness and Kraken are left. 💔
It only just occurred to me that this is the very same episode where we see Ed violently recoil from someone else touching him, but here, even though he's *surprised* when Stede steps close and puts the silk in his pocket, he also clearly welcomes it and doesn't flinch back at all. There's no instinctive move to regain his distance.
I would have killed for some sappy romantic stuff like this to happen in Supernatural, but I’m so happy that some shows are taking that step forward to portray these sorts of relationships without any queer baiting or death. Now we’re just emotionally devastated over two pirates, as the world always intended.

I think one of the things I love (on only my second or third watch of this...... honest......) is how Ed's look as Stede is taking the silk from him is both vulnerable and yet ready to kill him. He's had so many fucked up relationships in his life, he doesn't know where to even start navigating this one. It explains so much of what goes on to happen and I'm hoping season 2 is about Ed actually pushing Stede away initially as he decides he's worth being treated well and Stede needs to fight to win him back.

It explains so much of what goes on to happen and I'm hoping season 2 is about Ed actually pushing Stede away initially as he decides he's worth being treated well and Stede needs to fight to win him back.

I love how the music cues in when Stede says "look at that" like that's their theme, and it strikes up at a phrase associated with discovery, you can pin point the moment their love begins.
Stede transformed something Ed looked back as a sad memory and turned it into something beautiful, without noticing it 😭
