Chopped & Screwed sound was pioneered by DJ Screw, who would take songs and slow them down a bit. The idea was to give listeners the same effect one would have from drinking syrup drink (i.e. drinks with alcohol and cough syrup like Dimeatapp. Stupid, I know). As the Texas scene started taking over, many rappers would have songs with choruses that were chopped & screwed. A great example to react to would be one of two popular songs by Mike Jones: "Still Tippin'" and "Back Then," a song I think you'd like for the catchy beat and easily repeatable hook that has him talking about how people who wouldn't deal with him back in the day are doing so now because he's popular.
So did DJ Screw get permission to remix these songs? Or was it a mixtape thing? I'll add those Mike Jones songs to my list. First-time request for him.

@ABoomerReacts Yeah, that's true, you kinda have to be 4rm Houston/Texas/The South to get it right. K Rino is kinda a big deal out here, especially DJ Screw and The Screwed Up Click. Most of our Best Rappers came outta the S.U.C. Acts such as Zro, Big Hawk and Fat Pat(They Were Brothers R.I.P) Big Moe, Big Pokey, Trae The Truth, Mr 3-2, Lil Keke etc. Etc. Most of them ended up passing on, including DJ Screw, Zro is one of the few remaining members still alive. I'm glad you added those songs. You won't be disappointed, I promise 😊😁
Z-Ro is definitely loved in Houston, but on a global scale is mostly unknown. Even his "monthly listeners" count on Spotify is pretty low considering how long he's been rapping and the number of albums he's released. Also, the fact that you couldn't find a lyric video on him says something on it's own. I have this feeling that he hasn't really done any work with any major East Coast artists might have something to do with him not gaining major traction in his career. I only first heard of him in 2004 or 2005 reading an online article about him appearing in a Scarface song that was dissing 50 Cent. Apparently Z-Ro dissed 50 Cent even though he never even met him. Rap-A-Lot Records paid him money to do the diss and he did it. Like I said, i read that in an online article. Never heard about it in real life or by other rap fans. I probably wouldn't have heard of Z-Ro until even years later if not for that. Definitely never heard of Guerilla Maab before using the Internet and looking up obscure rap groups. As far as permission and reimbursement for Screw music, yeah that didn't happen. Especially since most of the stuff was personal mix tapes on cassettes being sold hand to hand. By the time Screw died in 2000, he was still just a regional star. His family has a record store in Houston that primarily sells CD-Rs of his old cassette mixes which is him Dj'ing other people's songs in his special method of mixing, but they aren't doing paperwork to make sure those artists are being reimbursed for their works on his mixes.
