    That lever on the Volvo probably used to be connected to a Telma retarder, big heavy magnetic unit would have been between gearbox and diff, used to be common on coaches before internal gearbox design like we have now

    @rolfwhite2563 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    That Volvo might have had an Telma electric retarder on it. They fit on the drive shaft out the back of the gearbox and between the rear axle. They work like the reverse of an electric motor and as you pull the lever it powers up the retarder more and more with each click of the lever. This then brakes the drive, means you don’t have to use the standard brakes as much and are not as hard on the engine as an exhaust brake. Means you can also keep the engine revs up. We had them on the underground mine trucks, due to long downhill runs fully loaded

    • @johncollier7744
      @johncollier7744 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agreed, I think they were once mandatory at one time especially if they were operating in Italy and Switzerland.

    • @rolfwhite2563
      @rolfwhite2563 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@johncollier7744 they are a great job, just have to be careful not to hold it in position 4 (full power) for too long or else they over heat. Normally position 2 was good. Just holds it back without affecting your normal driving

    • @johncollier7744
      @johncollier7744 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes we had them in the fire service, but it was operated via the throttle and footbrake. The first stage came in when you lifted off the throttle and second third and fourth stages when you applied the footbrake depending on how hard you pressed. We had a speed sensor to only activate it about 5mph and was interfaced through the abs. They saved us thousands in brake relies and the drivers loved them because of the additional braking power it gave them.
