Just an idea... with my personal recommendations as examples 5 guitars beginners should *try* before buying a guitar: 1) Any acoustic. This is to experience the string tension to compare to electric guitars. 2) stratocaster style. This is the design most non-guitarists think of when discussing electric guitar. 🎸 theyre versatile, and comfortable. Bright and bouncy sound. 2) les paul style. They're heavier, slightly harder to fret high notes, and sound amazing. They tend to be tonally darker and heavier. 3) any very high end guitar. This shows you what a good instrument should feel like. You don't need to spend $2000 to find a guitar that plays like a million. But until you've played a high quality instrument its easy to assume *all* guitars play the way entry level guitars do. 4) a 3/4 scale guitar (ibanez mikro). The shorter scale reduces the string tension, and reduces the distance between frets. Together this makes it far easier to play. Even people who have played for years should try a short scale guitar. They're very fun. 5) a freinds guitar. I know that seems like an obvious cop out, but its more important than people realize. If you can get anyone to show you how to strum even a single chord, youre more likely to buy a guitar you'll be happy with. Knowing how to hold the neck will help you find a neck thats comfortable for you in the long run.
Geez, how I wish the Fender Custom Shop would get off the relic train. NOS lacquer guitars, like the Broadcaster and this Esquire are a thousand times better!
I just bought one of these in Lake Placid Blue. I was nervous about it when they were first out, but recently realized they have the very rare spec of of nitro neck, as well as a nitro body. A nitro maple neck should start to show that awesome wear on the fretboard with playing. Your video is great- excellent comments and detail, and especially your obvious love and enthusiasm for the guitar and the tradition of excellence it represents
I love it that they went with nitro finishes. I got about ten years ago my Fender Highway one Strat just because it came with a super thin nitro finish that makes it age GREAT. It's looking amazing so far
You mentioned that this Esquire's "neck" tone is more usable than your old Esquire's. Capacitors age, which can significantly change their value and thus their effect on the guitar's tone. I don't know how stock you want your old Esquire to remain, but regardless it's worth measuring both guitars' capacitors (most multimeters these days can do that). Those capacitor values are probably very different, and swapping in one to your old guitar that matches the new one may fix the neck tone, as well as restore its original electronic specs.
Beat me to it. That's exactly whats happened. The original Caps have drifted value wise over the years. I think if it's me and the original wiring has never been touched I'd leave it as is. If the wiring has been soldered on already I'd go ahead and change it and keep the original(s) in a bag with the guitar.
I've tried explaining this to guys in regard to amps, because a lot of guys who played through late 60s Marshalls just dimed all the controls: Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, Kossoff, etc. And a guy on the Les Paul Forum argued with me over and over because he said you can't turn up the bass on a 60s Marshall, its mud city. I couldn't beat it into his skull that we're talking about brand new amps in the 60s vs those amps now. By comparison i applied those setting to a brand new hand-wired reissue clone of a JTM45/100 with a les paul plugged straight in and it sounded perfect.
I love mine! ❤ it’s wired with a 4-way switch position: 1- Straight to Output Jack 2- Volume only with No Tone 3- Standard Volume and Tone 4- Volume and Eldred Mod Cap. The greatest thing about this guitar… is it’s one of my first DIY Fender Tele electric that I built. A Jeff Beck Esquire Tribute copy.
I think the biggest reason why the tale is so versatile is bc these were designed to play anything with just the one pickup. Once you add the neck pickup it rly just makes it easier to access tones lending to enhanced versatility. Also esquires and a fuzz pedal have to be one of the biggest tone secrets there is. No one uses them anymore but youre really getting into some lp territory when you combine the two.
@@putinhuilo9115 When Fender made the Esquire it wanted to add some sonic options so they included the switch to add some variety. I love my Esquire, but changed the forward position with a different value capacitor so that it is not so muddy.
Here it is 2022 and my local store still had one of these in white. I just had to bring it home. Your video helped me evaluate and know this was the right purchase. Thanks.
Guitar-loving Robert: "Man, they even used flathead screws all over this thing because there wouldn't have been Phillips screws back in 1950. That's so cool and great attention to detail." ... Fender (while in pre-production): "What the f*ck are we going to do with all these damn screws we don't use anymore? We could jus-... oh, wait, I've got an idea." ;-)
I own one of these and its my favorite guitar to play. I had fun modding it a bit by replacing the saddles with brass, put in a Lindy Fralin split coil p90, and put a reverse control plate with a 4 way position switch (eldred coacked way mod, volume & tone, volume only, and straight to jack nothing in the way) It's amazing!
A friends father had a 1955 Esquire, looked just like your 58, same color, white guard. He bought it new and by the time I saw it for the 1st time around 1980 the color had gone to that buttercream type color and had finish checking all over. Just gorgeous! He even had kept the original strings in a package in the case. He sold it to Gruhns sometime back in the 90's.
Dang! I ended up getting a les paul about a year ago, because I couldn't find an esquire at a decent price (all custom shop or vintage). AND NOW THEY DROP THIS!
I just started playing about a month ago. I planned on just having one guitar. Well a month later I now have 3. A guitar is a beautiful thing. I love them all.
My number 1 guitar is a telecaster. I got it because I wanted an Esquire. As an ode to the Esquire I removed my tone pot (wasn't the original idea, I wanted a no load tone pot but things change). Its so cool that you are covering these guitars.
I had a pine Esquire come into my life spontaneously less than a month ago. Wild! It really has its own sound when the tone is bypassed. Really unique and not just another Telecaster.
Thats a sweet guitar. Some people play with the back of their hand on the bridge. The ashtray keeps the edges of the bridge and saddles from digging into your hand during a long session.
In the 3rd position the tone knob is bypassed like in the 1st position, but the pickup is routed through a treble roll off resistor. That is why it has that dark tone. In many ways it is the opposite of the 1st position. Leo added it so those western swing guys could use it like a bass. Needless to say, many players didn't like it and rewired their Esquire with a capacitor for the 3rd position so when you used the volume control it would have wah effect. Which was more useful for rock and standard country playing.
I have the MiM Fender Classic Series ‘50s Esquire and love it. So I jumped on one of these last night. I chose to get lake placid blue since I have the MiM in white blonde already. Very excited ….now the wait begins.
Hey man, your videos always make me get up and go play my guitar. These really mean a lot to me. Im glad to see companies recognizing you as a great platform to promote their products. I hope more come on board! Fingers crossed to winning that beautiful Epiphone! Good luck to everyone!
I got a reissued 68 Gibson Les Paul in the early 2000s. What I liked about it was they made the pickups looked tarnished. The pickup guard missing a couple of connectors and the pickup selector switch had an optional(and I used it) browned out(instead of white) cover. So it looked like I had the guitar since 68. I wish the case came beat up as well.
That thing is BOSS. It’s the reason I put a black Bakelite pickguard on the Squier I won from you. I had a feeling that’s why they didn’t put the black on the Squier, to differentiate between the 2
Hi Robert, Thank You for just being real and one of the coolest people on TH-cam. You love what you’re doing and it shows!!! You also make playing look so easy which means you’ve spent thousands of hours learning and loving the guitar. Once again, thank you for sharing with us!!!
SWEET GUITAR always wanted a Tele-esk guitar. First one I ever played was an early 60's Tele my buddy's brother had, about 40 years ago! It's my next want. I've got LP's, Strats, and SG''s. Gotta get one!! Thanks again. Dr. Dave
I bought a 63 american reissue (Dave's guitar shop exclusive) a few months ago and it is seriously incredible. This seems to have the same kinda vibe 👍
Dear Robert. I'm a big fan of yours, the fretboard course of yours feels like it has leapfrogged my playing 2 years ahead of schedule. Now, that the nice things have been said, would you consider setting up an affiliate link for a shop in Europe? I'd love to buy my stuff using that. Great stuff man, keep rocking 🤟
The polar white (or whatever the equivalent is on that guitar) is a stunning colour. Despite just being white, it really stands out. I was all set on getting a butterscotch blonde player tele until I played one in store which was white and I was like 👀
First video I have seen for these. Ive been looking for several weeks as well. I have been debating it but I just picked up the broadcaster..... I like that they put I different pickup in in vs just throwing in the blackguard hand-wound from the broadcaster. Gives me another reason to justify it.
Just purchased one in 2 color sunburst / fit and finish is perfect / it plays like a dream and the Tim Shaw pickup sounds great , the Case & Case candy really complete that vintage look , I’m a Stratocaster guy I played the Esquire and had to get one …. Now I’m thinking I will pick up a 70th anniversary Broadcaster as well
I have an affinity for Esquire guitars... I have 2 mint condition 2003 Fender MIK Espire Celtic Telecasters that I have modernized with SD hums & wiring. I wish I could afford one of these USA Fender 70th Esquires to add to the collection. If I could, that would be the pride of my collection until I win the lottery (not likely 🤣), and buy a REAL vintage 50's Esquire.
My American Special has the serial number on the back of the headstock. But still has Fender Pat Pending on the bridge plate piece. You'd think they would've got that by now.i knew that the bridge pieces supported two strings and that they were brass but I just realized that the fret nuts are all brass. Wouldve been awsome if the nut at the headstock were brass also.
Dude. I have the same throw rug! Never noticed. Got it at Levin a few years ago (I live in Pittsburgh). Got a matching lamp and gonna paint the room all the colors soon.
The American Vintage guitars built between 2012-2017 are made with the same specs/attention to detail, you should look into those guitars since you love this one so much. Not too many people know about those or are into them, and you can find them at relatively affordable prices used.
It's *almost* the original specs. There are a few very minor differences: 1/ This has 6105-size frets (tall/thin), not vintage 2/ As mentioned in the video, the capacitor engaged in the third "dark" position seems to be different and a lot more usuable and practical than the original Esquires, where that position was only really useful for dance-band style "pump" chords. 3/ The pickup is based on one particular Esquire's pickup they found in the wild at the Songbird Museum.
I’m glad to see Fender offering something legit, something that reflects true passion & pride in their product line. Offering a tangible example of what was a bold, original and well made example of a relatively new kind of instrument, the solid body electric guitar, mass produced and within the reach of the average musician at the time. This kind of product is not only interesting, it’s eminently useful. On the flip side... I’ve never apprehended why anyone would buy a new guitar and have paid extra to have it looked like it was thrown down the basement stairs a few times and then chain dragged 3 or 4 miles down a country road, aka a Relic’d guitar. The concept seems to be one that’s about deceit and something in the domain of a poseur. If I want a guitar to look like it’s been gigged to death, I’ll buy a genuinely shiny & new guitar and gig it until it looks like it’s seen better days. Even poly finishes age quickly with the acid-for-perspiration my DNA gave me. It takes longer, but it’s the real deal. Besides, it’s more fun to age a guitar or bass through actual use. Recently I saw a Fender Custom Shop offering that I believe was called the Double Esquire...it had a traditional Tele bridge and neck pickup as I recall. The only difference was that the stagger of the bridge pickup was reversed with the bass string side being closer to the bridge. That reversed angle of the bridge pickup can be had on any Telecaster by acquiring & changing out the stock bridge with an aftermarket bridge plate that street retails for under $50 bucks. Double Esquire? Really? I think most have called that a Telecaster for almost 70 years. That’s just lazy on Fender’s part. So thank you Robert for showcasing this particular Fender offering. It’s one of the few things that are outside the pale of the usual and customary that I’ve seen Fender offer in a while that is cool and useful. I hope they let you keep it.
Well said. Totally agree on the "relic" models. It's poseur for sure, like putting a number and "race" stickers all over your street vehicle that's never seen the track.
Great video! I think this is taking over as one of my favourite guitars. I've always wanted a tele, but this seems more unique! Plus it sounds awesome! I want one!
I'm predominantly a bass player, so I've never had much use for a tone knob. The two basses I built for myself don't even have them. I've always felt that an EQ pedal on your pedal board does a far better job at tone shaping than a simple low pass could. I suppose it's one of those personal preference things, how you want to dynamically control your tone.
Now in February 2021 im finding these on reverb for discounted prices........i think 1600 would be a steal for this, especially in that lake placid blue.....
That monster sounds insanely awesome, congratulations on another beautiful addition to your fleet, the case is beautiful as well... Peace dude \m/stay rock'n!\m/
The ashtray cover was created to provide noise shielding. You should make a setup with a dimmer, fluorescent lamp, and computer monitor to show noise changes with and without the cover. Besides getting in the way of palm muting and covering up the Twang Region of picking, you'll find the Tele cover does the same tone changes the LP players go through with covered/uncovered humbuckers -- which would be a good comparison to the Tele. Is there a steel baseplate under this pickup (hopefully)?
Don Randall wanted Leo to release the Esquire but Leo wasn’t ready, so he got Leo to make a single pickup version and that became the Esquire (originally, the name Esquire was supposed to be the two pickup model, but Don Randall needed a guitar to show at the Chicago Musical Instrument Dealers show (later NAMM), so Leo just did up a single pickup guitar which became the Esquire. The two pickup version became the Broadcaster until Gretch complained, then the “Nocaster” and once the original clipped decals ran out, it became the Telecaster. Speaking of Gretch... some years ago I ran across a used Gretch amp in a local music store. It was called (and I kid you not...) a “Twin Reverb”. I wonder what Fender thought about that...
Fun fact the original telecasters from the 50s the bridge has been polished in front of the pick up but not behind it because Leo Fender thought because of the shielding plate(ashtray) you wouldn't be able to see the unpolished part just to save that little bit of money genius the only thing he didn't thing of that people would not use them
Wow, congratulations man! so cool that you have an old one and this new one. I can't wait for the shoot out! Brobert, you've probably got the most impressive collection of guitars out of everyone I watch on youtube. Crazy to think, when I first subscribed like 4 years ago, you only had one Les Paul and were still playing your wifes strat with that Roland mod or whatever it was....
They definitely got it right! I’ve just recently bought a Broadcaster, and it sounds and plays amazing. The U shape necks should be standard personally speaking 😆
Wow I guessed it was an esquire before clicking on the video... great guitar man!! I hope you really enjoyed it!!! The looks are gorgeous!!! If I’m honest I would rather have the new fender one rather than the vintage because of the hassle but dude, I forever love the fender Esquire/Broadcaster/Nocaster/Telecaster and Stratocasters and other fender guitars but dude it looks so good on you!!!
Sorry to jump in, three years later. But Squier is now making an ESQUIRE. I got one in Lake Placid Blue. Change it the pickup to the Fender one for cheap, if you want. It will save you a ton of money.
The year Esquires TOOK OVER!! Happy Not so Teletuesday
I love that 3 way voicing switch. I never knew that Fender did that. Awesome!

Esquiers are cool guitars they only have one pickup and had pickup selecter so cool
I really like it, classic simplicity .... and that tone!
A case in a guitar youtuber's house? Imagine that?!?
Thanks Robert, great review, love your enthusiasm. Guess I'm going to have to buy one . . . . .
Regarding the "ashtray cover"...
I've heard the original purpose was to reduce electrical interference with the bridge pickup.
It keeps it clean
The flat head screws are such a cool touch. 🤙🏻
"it's not a telecaster." It's a re-release of the precursor to the telecaster and it is pretty much the same thing

@@RobertBakerGuitar LOL!!
Billy Squier play those same tone beautiful guitar it looks purpleish white against your shirt
I put a white pick guard on mine. Looks great!
Great video! I think this is taking over as one of my favourite guitars. I've always wanted a tele, but this seems more unique! Plus it sounds awesome! I want one!
That is absolutely beautiful. I don't think you'll get rid of that anytime soon.
You ROCK Brother. Thanks for shinning your light.
If I'm not mistaken, the first prototype of the Esquire in the late 40s was made in pinewood!
Yep it was pine just not roasted pine
I kept looking at the Goldtop with P90s hanging on the wall!
"avoid that copyright ,yeah" 😂 that's one cool sounding Tellll, sorry Esquire 💪
That's a super cool guitar!
What a sweet tele
Love the esquire look and pickup so beautiful
I was wondering if you were going to get one of these. Can't wait for a full comparison.
Fender does great quality. I just wish they offered nitro finishes on more lines.
Great tone. I love the sound in all three positions.
I dig it! New shoes break in to the wearer.. This has potential to break in to the player.
They definitely got it right! I’ve just recently bought a Broadcaster, and it sounds and plays amazing. The U shape necks should be standard personally speaking 😆
Just a beautiful guitar man those pickups are so snappy
I work for FedEx, and you have no I-DEA!! How many fender boxes I have seen. It’s crazy. But it makes me jealous. I want one...
Wow! So beautiful and such sweet sound!
I just recently heard about these Esquires. So tempted to get one!
They are rad man. They make a squier version as well if you are wanting to dip your toes into the Esquire world.
That Esquire sounds so good ! Cool video .
Sorry to jump in, three years later. But Squier is now making an ESQUIRE. I got one in Lake Placid Blue. Change it the pickup to the Fender one for cheap, if you want. It will save you a ton of money.
