Why didn't you guys ask for a wider lens? Their intended audience for this would be younger people I imagine, and who's got arms long enough to be flattering in a 24mm equivalent? Also how many of you guys are really making videos with this kind of camera? I would have expected an A7Siii to be the result of a focus group at sony, which still feels a little hyperbolic in terms of credit.
@@555soul5 can't know all the factors of these things and we didn't know they were going to make a camera out of those feedback sessions. We were completely in the dark.
It seems like they’ve brought back some of the things that made the RX 100 series popular (like the ND and low f stops)...plus some cool new vlogging features. The hot shoe mount and new mic setup peaks my interest along with the movie record button!
They said that it was literally a camera made of features that people were asking for and I think they nailed it... its not perfect, but only because thats impossible. You sacrifice going ultrawide for the f1.8. You sacrifice long battery life for the compact size. You sacrifice some other stuff for the more reasonable price tag.

If I had this option two years ago, I would have been all in. But now it’s exciting that another young generation will be able to get into a higher quality vlog set up for a decent price. I rising tide lifts all ships.
It would be sweet if it had a slllllightly larger sensor like micro 4/3. That f4.5 equivalent aperture isn't quite there for anything other than talking closely to the camera from a couple feet away. In a "TH-cam studio" environment it would be hard to capture a defocused background. Nice video dude!
Yeah, I hear you... but at that point I feel like people will just go aps-c. I wonder if they could make an m4/3 size point and shoot? Do you know of one that exists?
@@dunnadidit i don't think so. Maybe there's a weird Leica out there? I'm thinking something like the Fuji X100 body with a 16mm f2.0 equivalent lens, ND built in, flippy screen, good stabilization. Lets throw 10-bit 422 on that list just as a bonus. That's the dream!
Just spent a day with this camera. I love it so much! I have the a6500 and the footage I shot with the ZV1 is so much more usable while vlogging. The a6500 will be used as my sit down talk to the camera set up, while the ZV1 will be my vlogging camera.

very good review mate, keep it up! I'm buying this :) ...this is almost perfect they purposely didn't put everything here even basic usb-type c so people would upgrade when they release ZV-II which probably has better image stabilisation.
How would you compare this to something like the A6600? The biggest downside for vlogging on a lot of the Sony’s is trying to frame yourself without the flip screen but the A6600 flips up. Does the fully articulating screen + smaller form factor make this something you would get in addition to the A6600, or would you only recommend this to people looking to get their first camera?
I think the big difference is that this is supposed to be more "point-and-shoot" than something like the a6600. The a6600 will have better quality, lens options, better battery, and still has a flip screen. But if you need something you can toss in your pocket... you'll have to have big pockets to fit the a6600 in there lol. This will probably end up being a companion to my a6600. My lineup will be a7iii a6600 and zv1 (I'll probably sell my a6400)
Interesting! Would not have expected this from a non-interchangeable lens camera. At a comparable price, I feel that the a6100 with a lens is still a better buy, but can definitely understand how this appeals to their intended target audience. Good video and overview!

I think it looks like a cool little camera but it's disappointing that it lacks USB C, an ultra-wide angle lens for vloggers, dual USB card slot, and a touch screen for touch to focus. Other than that I think it's great.
You can check off the screen for touch to focus! I showed that in the video. But yeah the other stuff would be nice. Probably won’t see dual card slots in a point and shoot any time soon but usb-c and a wider lens would have been nice.
Just got myself the Sony a6000 and i love it! But @dunnadidit would this be a great camera to have just to create video content? Not going to rush out and buy it, but it has piqued my interest.
Not bad but not great. Sony is known for doing pretty well in low light but because we're getting into smaller sensors here we're not going to be able to expect as much as with their larger sensor cameras.
When are we actually getting an apsc with stabilization for video. Ibis is trash unless you're taking photos. I guess this camera proves it's possible in a smaller format
Because people will just be mad when they find out that the camera has to be bigger in order to accommodate for a bigger sensor 😂. Its like they don’t believe in physics
McWafflesPK I think the only way it would be possible is to have the body to be at least the size of Olympus OMD levels to have the stabilization we’re looking for (and thats only for a smaller sensor, MFT). We have to be at least DSLR sized bodies for real video stabilization. Albeit full frame, I have an S1 now and the stabilization is godly compared to my A7III and camera body size definitely had a role in that. The a6x00 series relies on that small form factor as its selling points, I think the only way to have it have sufficient sensor stabilization for video is for it to be at least the size of the A7 series. As we can see from the ZV-1 even with a small sensor, proportions still matter and small body + small sensor still can be unstable/warpy
I have the a6500 so I might be able to answer this. The biggest difference is steadiness of footage. The a6400 will have better IQ depending on the lens you're using, but it's going to be much harder to capture footage that's usable IMO, due to it not having the advanced stabilization that the ZV-1 has. Even with my A6500 with IBIS turned on and a lens that's stabilized. It was impossible to get vlogging footage that didn't have ridiculous shake or rolling shutter. The ZV1 works right out of the box, and you don't need to be very well versed in cameras to get amazing footage like you would with the a6400. Honestly, if you're just vlogging. Get this. If you make short movies or love the art of photography, get the a6400. The a6400 is also much more fun to use. I find value in having them both and I'm glad I bought the ZV1.
I think it was TH-camr "Michael the Maven" who requested to replace the hot shoe mount with a pop-up microphone at the Sony bootcamp. He discussed it when reviewing the a6600. Everything is good with this camera except the Micro-USB instead of USB-C. It's 2020 and I don't know why Sony is still opting for an ugly Micro USB. To be honest I don't like the flip-out screen because the chances of it being karate-chopped are huge. I still like the flip-up screen instead so your line of sight is on top and it wouldn't be that noticeable to your audience if you look at the screen. The flip-up screen makes made a smaller footprint than this.
@@dunnadidit I did once with my Canon 750D when I was on a trip to Armenia and Georgia (country). Haha. That's why I replaced it with Canon M6 mark 1 last year. I'm planning to get the Sony A6600 because it's on sale right now here in the gulf for only $1080 USD on the body only. That's the best price I could find anywhere. By the way I like the L bracket + Cold shoe Relocation plate you used on the A6600. I hope you can do a video of that in the future. I was opting to get the full cage for the a6600 from smallrig but I was quite worried that the bar from the top (for attaching smallrig handles) would block the screen. 1. Would the top-plate of the cage block the screen? 2. What are your thoughts about the cage? 3. Should I get the Smallrig L bracket instead?
Haha you gotta be careful doing karate around your cameras lol. I use an L bracket from uurig and then the smallrig hot shoe mover and its perfect for me. The UUrig L-bracket has another cold shoe on the side too and some 1/4" threads for mounting stuff. I prefer this to a full cage like I've had on previous cameras!
@@dunnadidit Yeah I will, haha. I'm usually very careful with my cameras, no dents and scratches but when I was riding a train some guy raised his hand and hit the screen of m camera. Haha. Good thing nothing serious happened. Thanks for the feedback and I'll be checking that UUrig L-bracket and that cold shoe mover. :)
It seems like there is a sharpness/quality/something loss when the digital stabilization is on. I’ve noticed in the other million videos dropped today as well.
Probably has something to do with the way digital stabilization works, I think you end up making what would have been motion blur from little shakes into a bit of a mush on some movements. I’ve noticed that on action cameras too, they’re super stable, but it can kinda look mushy when it’s having to work hard.
Interesting thought! I have heard that some action cams rely on shutter cranking yo help with digital stabilization. My understanding with this is that it’s actually using gyro info though, so maybe not... maybe more testing needs to be done!
The only thing I'm annoyed with in this camera is that IT DOESN'T HAVE WIDE-ANGLE! That's the only turn - off in this camera. Else I would've given it a 5/5! 🙄😓
Looks like some thought went into it, to me it would only be used as a video camera, I hate shooting photos on a camera without a viewfinder. It’s a little on the pricey side for a vlogging camera though, to me. It’s a step in the right direction though, the tripod control is cool too. GAS! :p
Yeah I really don't think its going to be much of a photographers camera. I'm not an evf guy either but the manual focus thing kinda made me not want to take as many photos with it.
I wonder if there are still some limitations with usb c. I ran into some issues with some deity products using usb-c to usb-c cable. It had to be usb-c to usb-a. So I wonder if there are just still some quirks.
When are we going to get 4k at 60 fps in any of these cameras Sony?!?!?! It is an impressive little camera, but until there is 4k at 60 fps I am out on any new Sony cameras.
Meh 🤷♂️ I feel like people make a bigger deal out of getting 4k 60 than they need to. Its a cool feature to have but not a game changer for me personally.
@@dunnadidit I get it, but for my needs, I need the ability to have sharp slow motion footage as I work in the outdoor industries. 60 fps at 40% in a 24 fps timeline ... butter smooth.
meh......just feels like a super gimmicky camera. Thank God they have the real announcements coming in June. The ND filter is cool. Is it digital or actually physical? Face detect exposure is a cool feature. The slow-motion features are cool too. Wish they could do them on the larger sensors.....probably way harder though.
I dunno if I'd agree about it being "gimmicky"... its definitely "niche" though. Just like whatever they release in June will probably be "niche" to pro users probably.
They know that people look for USB C and multipair ability ( for headsets) so they design it in order not to have the stuffs people are actually expecting. But why they enjoy doing this.. I dont know.
I don’t think they design it specifically to not have things people want. That would be counterproductive for them as a brand. I think there must have been some limitation (maybe it would have been more expensive) that they decided to use usb micro
It’s wouldn’t necessarily be a replacement for a 6xxx camera. But if you were looking for something simple and small with basically all the same features as the a6600 plus more, then this would do.
I don't know why i'm watching so many Videos of this camera, i will never buy it to expensive, its boring camera i don't know what is so amazing about it, its super big, even bigger than rx100 vii, it doesn't even has manual focus ring. What a boring brick
Rx100 vii - $1200 Rx100 vi - $1100 Those are the two closest comparable cameras. So yeah... only $799. Especially considering the powerhouse this little thing is!
I’m interested to know why you think they did it on purpose? How does it benefit them? I always assumed it was some kind of limitation that made it easier to do micro usb right now.
I stop using any Sony products since I’m using iPad Pro for traveling and editing because Sony use their own 4K format (XAVC) who are totally incompatible with the iPad Pro. (That’s probably why you don’t have a usb-c connecting). I never been able to watch a 4K video on my iPad Pro from the action cam fdr x1000 because of that. Can you tell me if it’s possible now? Sony was so stupid about that because, when you want to traveling lights, you buy small camera and you don’t bring with you the big mac book pro.
Dunna Did It hmmmmm. Do you have a tutorial about that? Did you try with the FDR X1000? I know it’s a old camera now but I preferred this camera then the GoPro, except for the transfer format.

I just watched reviews by Ted Forbes, Kai .W. and Jared Polin and decided it's not for me...I think for fun video and photo stuff, I will stick to the RX100 VII I own and for my pro work I will stay with my Z6 and Z7
Nice!
oh my god, you're a fellow Edmontonian! Hello!!!!!!
HEYOOOO!
Can you use a filter on the lens?
Not as far as I’m aware.
JUST KIDDING! I Just found out that sony makes an adapter that allows you to use 49mm filter thread filters.
and once there were only ZV-1 videos
HAHAHA 😂

@@dunnadidit thanks lord Dunna 💕
You’re welcome sir Reckless!
What is the sensor size?
Its a 1" sensor. I think I mentioned that in the video a few times 😃
If it's a video camera - then does it save a timelapse as a 4K movie 🙏🏼 file or hundreds of meh stills only?
24-70 is a bit tight especially for vloggers in my opinion
Agree. 18-55 would be perfect.
I'm used to vlogging on 18mm aps-c so it felt not bad for me, but I get that for people used to vlogging at 16mm Full frame.
is this pre order available in Canada now???
I believe so! Try Henry’s if you don’t like ordering from b&h 😁
Great review! Now let's get on to the A7Siii LOL
Haha rumors sites say we might hear something in June... I haven't heard anything yet though!
Just got myself the Sony a6000 and i love it! But @dunnadidit would this be a great camera to have just to create video content? Not going to rush out and buy it, but it has piqued my interest.
Yup! That’s exactly what it’s designed for! Definitely not the highest quality in the line but is still really great! Especially for the price
@@dunnadidit thanks
Damn pretty powerful 🔥

does timelapses?
Yup! It has an interval mode!
@@dunnadidit THANKS!
How is the battery life?
Meh... not bad but not great. About what you'd expect from a point and shoot size camera.
Low light?
Not bad but not great. Sony is known for doing pretty well in low light but because we're getting into smaller sensors here we're not going to be able to expect as much as with their larger sensor cameras.
What the battery life like on this thing?
About what you’d expect from a tiny lil point and shoot. Not great but not terrible.
When are we actually getting an apsc with stabilization for video. Ibis is trash unless you're taking photos. I guess this camera proves it's possible in a smaller format
Hopefully its coming!
Because people will just be mad when they find out that the camera has to be bigger in order to accommodate for a bigger sensor 😂. Its like they don’t believe in physics
TRNDSTTRS I wouldn't mind the current apsc line up to get bigger like the 6600 tbh my 6100 is super uncomfortable in my hand
What's the pros and cons of this vs the a6400? This camera doesn't seem like it's worth $800 when you can get an a6400 for $1000?
I’m actually making a video on this soon!
@@dunnadidit sweet, I think that will be super helpful!
Wish it was 16-35 equivalent
Yeah I don’t think they could have done the f1.8 if they went that wide

YEG represent!
Still not USB-C or full touchscreen. Boooo. Still buying it though, lol.
Haha this comment is straight from my own thoughts.
Great points San... do you find you often karate chop around your cameras? 😜
Ahhh that makes sense. Makes me wonder... if you crank the shutter, would solve that problem and remove the mush?
Interesting thought! I have heard that some action cams rely on shutter cranking yo help with digital stabilization. My understanding with this is that it’s actually using gyro info though, so maybe not... maybe more testing needs to be done!
The only thing I'm annoyed with in this camera is that IT DOESN'T HAVE WIDE-ANGLE! That's the only turn - off in this camera. Else I would've given it a 5/5! 🙄😓
That's what i told u on Twitter 😁😁😁
You win! Not sure what you win... a high five 🙌
@@dunnadidit yes it is good enough :D
Looks like some thought went into it, to me it would only be used as a video camera, I hate shooting photos on a camera without a viewfinder. It’s a little on the pricey side for a vlogging camera though, to me. It’s a step in the right direction though, the tripod control is cool too. GAS! :p
Yeah I really don't think its going to be much of a photographers camera. I'm not an evf guy either but the manual focus thing kinda made me not want to take as many photos with it.
Dunna Did It - exactly and why no USB C? 🙄
I wonder if there are still some limitations with usb c. I ran into some issues with some deity products using usb-c to usb-c cable. It had to be usb-c to usb-a. So I wonder if there are just still some quirks.
Dunna Did It - it could be, just wish we could settle on one, too many different connections! Wish the exchange didn’t kill us in 🇨🇦

Cool! Yeah its definitely different for everyone. For me... 1080 60fps upscaled usually does the trick for me.
Yeaahhh dude! i will switch right away back to SONY if they implemented 4k 60fps.
i lovegh5, but contrast detection is suckass!
meh......just feels like a super gimmicky camera.
Shame the lens just isn't wide enough...unless your arms are 5ft long that is
I got some good monkey arms for vlogging but I hear you!

YEG!!
All reviewers in TH-cam and in print media are afraid to say this fact: Sony ZV-1 is made in China.
They try their best not to mention it.
not a wide enough angle for walking vlogs
For some people I agree. It’s fine for me with my long arms
No way in hell this is worth it over a A6000 series.
Is it?
It’s wouldn’t necessarily be a replacement for a 6xxx camera. But if you were looking for something simple and small with basically all the same features as the a6600 plus more, then this would do.
Corona xD
It is a dead cat ... not wind shield .. hehehe.
I’ve always hated that nomenclature. Let’s call it a “fluffy bunny” instead
I don't know why i'm watching so many Videos of this camera, i will never buy it to expensive, its boring camera i don't know what is so amazing about it, its super big, even bigger than rx100 vii, it doesn't even has manual focus ring. What a boring brick
"Only $799?" -_-
Rx100 vii - $1200
Rx100 vi - $1100
Those are the two closest comparable cameras. So yeah... only $799. Especially considering the powerhouse this little thing is!
No USB-C, that is so dirty.
100% Sony did that on purpose.
All their new headphones have USB-C.
So do we wait for the Sony ZV-2?
I'm not sure about ipad pro (mine should be here in a week or two) but I transfer xavc files to my iphone all the time.
Dunna Did It hmmmmm. Do you have a tutorial about that? Did you try with the FDR X1000? I know it’s a old camera now but I preferred this camera then the GoPro, except for the transfer format.
I don't! But I'll consider it!
Thanks, i appreciate it. Have a nice day
