    The Sony ZV-1 (sdp.io/zv1) is a video camera for TH-camrs, vloggers, and other creators. It has a flippy screen and it’s in the right place - the side - where it won’t be blocked by the mic or tripod. It supports wireless microphone connections, or if you do want a wired microphone, the mic jack doesn’t block the screen! It has a product showcase feature that actually gets what you’re holding in focus for things like unboxings and makeup videos… and it works!
    But it has some serious problems, too. The menu system and user interface are a holy nightmare, like every other Sony camera. You can’t change settings with the touchscreen, so you have to fumble around with fiddly little dials on the back of the camera. Active Stabilization promises to smooth out your walking or driving videos, but if you forget to turn it off, it will ruin tripod-mounted videos by introducing ugly shaking to them. Autoexposure is pretty unreliable. Wireless video transfers proved to be completely useless, making file management far more time consuming than necessary.

    For the two people focusing issue you had just use flexible spot focus mode and it will always focus on the person nearest to the focus point. Alternatively register the faces and then set the priority (ie set Chelsea s number 1 and of course Tony is a number 2 ;) )

    Honestly I don’t even want the camera but watched and appreciate the detail you put in to the video. I’ve watched other TH-camrs videos on the same camera and nobody seems to go in to as much detail about the pros and cons or finding problems before people spend their hard earned money and realize afterwards that it may not be the camera for them. At least people will be aware of the issues ahead of time and are able to decide if in their situation the camera has more good in it than bad. Also since you tend to find little bugs that others don’t, hopefully camera manufacturers will be able to provide quicker updates that will hopefully fix the issues. Keep up the good work!

  • @Linealo
    @Linealo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I love how Chelsea showcases the flippy screen and is so happy about how it's not interfering with the tripod while Sony then actually placed the whole Tripod-Mount of the camera right IN the SD-Card and battery space. As Gerlad Undone pointed out, this blocks your access to those crucial areas while there was enough, and I mean enough, space to just put the mount more to the other side.
    From what I've seen so far, this seems like a very okayish camera, but chromatic aberration in this amount on a fixed (and should be optimised) lens bugged me from first footages seen, no headphone jack and the stronger crop also are sadly a no go for me personally. And Sony sticked to much to their guns (no touch control, same designs, no 4K 60p OR H.265 / 10Bit so far, losing eye-af in certain modes) while they should have the features by now - and it makes me worried about the A7IV and A7IIIs. I don't expect the perfect camera, but some of those flaws are to old to not be fixed yet. All those beautiful features won't help in any way if you actually can't deliver the quality and story in your pictures because it's not wide enough or does not have a fast and intuitive enough way to use it properly.
    Now, I'm sure the firmware is not final and Sony listenes sooner than later, but at this price point and with this lens it's not on my list at least. Others, like Tony and Chelsea said, might have better use for it.
    And no, I don't have a real alternative on hand to tell someone asking me, but the ZV-1 wouldn't be a recommendation without warnings.

    You can add a wide angle lens to make it 16/17mm with the auto focus etc enabled.

  • @LaveaFirmis
    @LaveaFirmis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the auto focus issue with 2 people in frame, surely you can tap on the touch screen to track the one face or it has the face recognition where you can save a face and it will priorities that face?
    Also I strongly dislike the wireless photo transfer on cameras, even if it was fast enough (which it’s no where near) it chews through the battery. I’d much rather take the card out than risk damaging the USB port on the camera or flattening the battery. Whatever camera option save battery is what I pick. I do use the phone app very occasionally for remote control that can be useful for sure.

    A vlogging camera should have a more-than-decent stabilization and widest angle wider than 24mm(which isn’t even 24mm anymore with electronic IS). If you need a separate gimbal, which you will looking at the rest footages, its form factor(especially articulating flip out screen) is nullified.

    Really nice video! I have a question or perhaps a suggestion. Large numbers of people need right now to get into video teleconferencing involving more active scenarios than just talking heads. Think of art teachers, music teachers, or doctors, who have to work more hands-on with clients. I guess this is an amalgamation of webcam and vlogging but for a less nerdy audience. Does anything you are talking about here apply to this rapidly-growing market?

    Kudos for Sony putting the flip screen on the side and the mic jack on the opposing side. Removing touch control from the screen though? This camera will be as frustrating as other cameras, just for different reasons. I tell you if Apple were to put a framing monitor on the back of the iPhone with touch control so vloggers could use the front-facing camera (the better main cameras) it would be the way to go. Just my thoughts.

      "The screen gets dark when I try to film in 4K. Why you doin' this?"
      At least it has a flip out screen and no record limit. Finally Sony figured out the basics. If it would have had B.O.S.S. image stabilization like the Sony AX53, would have been even better but that wouldn't really work on a camera designed like this.
      Lol. The board room meeting:
      "Hey boss, we are running out of money, we haven't changed our recording codecs since 2015 and the peasants are catching on."
      "Look Steve, we are Sony, we will get every penny we can out of our old technology. It pleases our reptilian overlord investors. We do need to actually make something new though."
      "I have an idea boss, what about a vlogger's camera?"
      "A vlogger's camera? How will that work?"
      "Well boss, Canon is letting us borrow the Canon Cripple Hammer. They say it has magical powers and if we are able to control it from wrecking our factory, we may be able to harness its power. We've done that, sorry I didn't tell you but it was for a good cause boss. We have learned the secrets of the universe and will include some of that in our new vlogger's camera."
      "Well Steve, you're getting a pay raise. I'm impressed. Go make the camera. And give the Cripple Hammer back to Canon, didn't your mother teach you not to play with fire Steve? That Canon Cripple Hammer is dangerous. You saw what it did to Panasonic when they rented it for a month. The GX100 was crippled pretty bad. So get that thing out of my factory after you make the camera or I'll have to fire you myself."

    Though using any third party portable USB charger would also work, nothing beats an in-house integrated solution.

    I had a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX 100 VI but as I used it for my climbing or hiking vids I was quite unhappy because it had no stabilisation for 4K videos. So I've sold it and bought a Sony ZV-1, but I'm unhappy again because the zoom is really disappointing especially in comparison to the great zoom of the RX 100 VI. And the stabilisation on the ZV-1 isn't bad but also not very good, as I don't film myself but mainly the trail in front of me and the nature around me. Don't know, perhaps I will sell the ZV-1 and buy the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX 100 VII. After all it's quite a challenge to find the perfect 4k cam now. Had the Sony 350 some years for 1080 dpi vids and it worked great because the cam only weights 230 gram and had a good stabilisation. I've bought the ZV-1 after seeing hyped videos about it, it's not a bad cam but even not a good one for my needs.

    Tony & Chelsea, we have the new IDOLCAM VlogStar V2 shotgun/Lavalier microphone in one, small size, perfect for ZV1, can we send you one for the next mic review you are doing?

    I think you can register faces and set face as a priority, it was a feature before at least.

    Good thing Tony pointed out the auto focus problem with more than one person in the camera. 4K showed a lot of details on the face..LOL

    You can't touch one face on the screen to tell it to track that face the whole time? The sound wasn't super impressive but seemed better when you were farther away

    • @RealRaynedance
      @RealRaynedance 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it has the same sort of object tracking as the a7III (and I assume other Sony mirrorless cameras) buried somewhere in its settings, you _MIGHT_ be able to get it to do that, but it'd be difficult to get it to focus on anything else without turning that off.

    Looks like you two didn't read the product manual. You were showing a close up, the target was the DJI drone transmitter....this camera DOES have a dedicated button (C2 / Product Showcase Setting) which eliminates focus hunting.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We were using product showcase for the DJI drone transmitter... but that's not what Product Showcase is for. Product Showcase prioritizes foreground objects over faces, which didn't apply to that scene.

    Hair boy did a more realistic job of reviewing. The mic is good and the product mode is useful. Having a record light on the front is great but the polarized flippy screen is a non starter for blogging as its black in sunglasses. No touch menus is a real problem for Sony. It also seems to have issues with heating in 4k. Not sure it's worth 1k

    Fix the AF issue by using an aperture setting that gives you more depth of field... F8 and above....

    Another idea occurred to me yesterday while I was thinking about the two one-button advanced functions: Bokeh and Product Showcase. To bring this one-button-advanced-feature to the a7-line, Sony should let us record and name our own sequences of camera-settings-actions, which we can assign to buttons of our choice. In other words, let us roll our own advanced one-button functions. I love these two advanced-features they've added to the ZV-1! But, Sony should not do this for us on the a7-line. Let us program our own! Whadaya think?

      IKR? When the embargo was lifted, my feed was flooded with reviews and impressions and most of the TH-camrs had either the same glowing titles or ridiculous thumbnails or I felt I was listening to Sony's product sheet. Tony & Chelsea's first impression with this camera seem the most sincere to me.

    Great little camera, oops mustn't say that as Sony need a kick up the backside again! Why is the touch screen not a touch screen? I just don't get it when you can use the screen for touch to focus. A couple of other, fairly minor and hopefully firmware upgrade-able, issues and a wider angle zoom and everything else will be toast.

    Awesome review guys,the first one i have seen for the ZV-1 that told us everything we needed to know before laying down the cash. I laughed so hard at trying to transfer files over wi fi i almost chocked!!! To me a camera at this price needs to be able to change the settings with the touchscreen otherwise it becomes a dumb camera against a smart phone.

    The title confuses me. “Almost perfect” but it seems like he had issues with pretty much everything on the camera lol. So is this camera worth getting or should I look for something else? Because the price tag is huge for me. Whatever camera I get is going to need to last me for years.

    I really enjoy your reviews. This one too was entertaining, interesting, and helpful. I have one request though, can you folk consider doing more with the MFT cameras?. You quite frequently mention how much you value lightweight and travel friendly, but seldom use cameras like the EM-1 mk iii. I get it that you prefer full frame and canon lenses for "artistic", "publishing", "photo-on-the-wall prints". However, for youtube work, and for us amateur travel photographers who like to travel with just carry-on equipment sets, the MFT kit seems like it should work well (Oly claims 50 to 80 megapixels nowadays). Yet, you never talk about MFT. Thanks for the wonderful work you do,

    I don’t understand why they left the touchscreen like that. I have 3 Sony camcorders of old and they all have fully working, turnable touch screens. So it’s not like Sony haven’t developed it. Great pity.

    Love the no-touch teasing segment ! Sony must enjoy people making fun of no touch screen. There should be a pool for when they go to full touch on most of their cams. But yeah not wide enough is even bigger problem. Nice built in mic !

    I assume that ISO can be mapped to the right directional button instead of forcing you into the Fn menu, like every RX100.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably, but the same problem would still exist, and I find that having it mapped to the D-Pad means it gets accidentally hit regularly.

    Looks like Sony needs to do some serious firmware update fixing multi-focus and edge screen jittering issues. EIS performance is a bit disappointing too. I don't have a clue why they did not go with USB-C connection. Tripod not having the rechargeable internal battery is puzzling too.

    Did you do the updates because my camera after being updated had no trouble with multiple focusing and priority and then who'd focus on it didn't do what you're describing so did you update it and register it or is it an issue or software you're not used to yet
