👍 you smashed it! Nice one! I dropped to the Macmillan ride this year as unfit.🙁 Rode the Gran Fondo last year and have entered that again for next year. I'll probably still be over 9hrs for the Gran Fondo! 😂
Awesome effort Ed, can't wait for next year!! I just about managed to do the Macmillan 100 in 2022 and completed the Medio Fondo this year about an hour quicker than I thought I could; I've already signed up for the Gran Fondo next year. I quit smoking in 2019 after nearly 20 years, lost nearly 20 kilos in weight since Jan this year to complete these rides. The Dragon Rides have been massive personal goals for me trying to get healthy and fit and I'll keep working.. bring on the Devil in 2025!
Not great to be held up at the final feed stop but worse for those who got turned back where they had to climb back up what would have been the final descent to the detour and having to do another 12K. Worse still for the crash victims on that stretch of road. Not sure what happened but seems like it was from 7am that morning. Ended up giving up on completion time all together and just went with moving time for my own gratification. Not gonna lie I did enjoy a bit of a rest but made for a longer than intended day out. You were proper organised for this run congrats!
Superb ride and fantastic story telling of the day, with some stunning drone footage. Behind every great performance lies the team of worker bees that help make the sweet taste of success possible. So chapeau Charlie , Dom and all the support crew. Champion ride Sir.👏
What a ride! Fair play to you sir. I've entered for next years Medio Fondo which is going to be a massive challenge for me as my longest ride to date is only 65km with nowhere near the amount of elevation. I'm currently weighing 20.5 stone so I'm using it as my end goal for what I hope will be 12 months of transformation on the bike and hopefully off it as well!
gold medal to the MVPs of this day - the helpers!! some stunning roads there - think I've ridden most of them, but certainly not all in the same day!! toughest climb has to the the elbow, but that drag up the Bwlch from Treorchy is a killer too. 300ks and then you rode home! chapeau!!!
Absolutely brilliant work - definitely think the Pogacar tuft made all the difference! You’re a legend but reckon Charlie is too and deserves a medal 🏅
Wow, this is my favourite video to date. The footage was tremendous, all thanks to the band of great friends and helpers that you have. Charlie deserves on helluva night out and meal for this. But i can't believe the face that you pulled when you gave her a kiss on her last service stop.🙄🤪 Just hope that she doesn't look back at the footage of that.😉 Amazing performance Ed.👍
Chapeau Sir.. Did the Devil ride bin 9.56 this year... all the points you made about finding a good group and working together spot on.... Started Black mountain with about 15/16 of us and but the end of the 296km there was just 4 of us who had rode the whole thing working and taking turns on the flat and working a climbing pace for us all. Thought I'll be 11/12 hrs so chuffed to do under the 10 hrs.. The last climb the legs felt it but as your pre-video said its all down hill from 260 thank god.. Great wrap-up video BTW.. Thanks.
22:21 Charlie's face 😂 no wonder she made you ride home 😂. All jokes aside, absolutely fantastic ride Ed. You really are head and shoulders above us average riders. Amazing. Big shout out to all that helped you 👌... Still can't believe you ride home after it.
Ed, you’re and absolute legend! Been waiting for this video since I saw you whizz past me at the Treorchy feed station shouting you were on for the time! I was literally watching the results page after that 😂 Charlie absolutely was MVP! Awesome support from the backpedal cohort too as well as your support crew! Awesome footage by Dom too! Sorry for the Treorchy Traffic especially the traffic lights at stag square! I had the privilege of speaking to so many riders at the Treorchy feed station and I’m already looking forward seeing everyone next year!
Great video! I did the Gran Fondo on Sunday, awesome event (only my 2nd event), and I made sure I ate as much as I could (the potatoes at the feed stops were fab!). Took me 11 hours (10 hours cycling), managed to get up all the climbs without stopping, although I almost cracked on Devil's Elbow :-) not bad for a 55 year old, relatively new cyclist with arthritis in both hips! Now I've recovered, I'm thinking about the devil next year :-)
Superb video, brought back some memories for me,done the Devil in 2019,its Definitely the uk’s hardest sportive and I’ve done all the Big miles ones. Thanks for the insight to a long day in the saddle.Chapeau ed and your partner deserved a medal too.
What an amazing day/effort. I want to do the climb to Kaiser over here in the US is similar to the dragon ride 16000 feet of climbing in 120 miles. I have a ways to go but your training plan got me over 49 miles with 4000 feet of vert this weekend it up Mount St. Helens. Lots of work to be done and I know I needed more carbs and to work on my bike fit thanks again love it❤❤❤
Complted this year in 11:50 as a 49nyr old. Do not underestimate! the unbelievable scenery and a lifetime achievement! I'd recommend anyone to have a go. My biggest memory will be the amazing people of Wales, and incredible support and quality of roads! Just do this ride! its' incredible! What Ed does is outrageous!
What you're describing, 7.5 hours in, not being able to feel your legs - that happened me on the 312 this year, I had to cane it from basically the bottom of the last big climb to the final cut off point, absolutely flying, passing all sorts of massive groups on the road to make the time, due to a confluence of events conspiring to put me on the back foot time wise. Never had legs like it. Once I got to KM240 or thereabouts though... I didn't half pay for it.
Just like to say very well done again on a super ride Ed. As well to your number, one fan for going above and beyond to make sure you’ve got your last nutrition hit to see you to the end. As well as all the others help us along the way who gave you support and hope grandad like your medal. 👏👏👍
Fabulous footage Ed, the organisers will be delighted! I trained for the Devil in 2017 but the weather was so shocking I dropped down on the day to the Gran Fondo. That was bad enough, howling gales and pouring rain. The route was in reverse in those days
great suff Ed! glad I wished you luck at the start. I did the Gran Fondo and loved it the route design is excellent and the climbs are stunning. Absolutely nuts how quick you went though!
I did the medio and your tips defiantly helped. Only mistake was new shoes that shredded my heels in the first 40 miles but i did it not fast but was still strong and felt ready to go again the next day.
I did the gran fondo this year, my first event like this as a fairly new cyclist. A great experience! I saw you at the bottom of the elbow in fact and shouted a customary allez, but I think you were in the zone!
this was great Ed. very easy to watch and pace of the video matched your pace of the bike. there are a lot of people helping in the background to bring about any success.
Chapeau in every sense of the word to the whole team. Such a difficult day to plan and more so execute. Great , essential, support network which worked like clockwork. Be proud for you and your team and the plan.
Great effort and nice video. That's a similar effort and duration needed to do fairly well at something like the Unbound 200... Would be great to see you attempt something like that in a future video!
Nice video and well done Ed! Lucky you didn't have to rely on the event feeds, they were extremely disappointing. They didn't have what they advertised and many of them ran out of things like gels and electrolyte tabs. Very disappointing considering the entry fee and their partnership with SiS. Would have been better carrying all my own food and just queuing for the water.
@@edlaverack I have but fear it may fall on deaf ears. On one of the evo base rides someone who had done the ride a couple of years back said everything that we found on Sunday. I just thought he was fussy but he was bang on. I did heed his words slightly carrying more sugar water but I lost a bidon after 20km so was more reliant on the feed stations which were disappointing. Maybe with SiS support I expected more but not having what they promised and running out seems to be a lesson they haven’t learnt.
Where I went college in the NorCal redwoods there is ride tour of the unknown coast 100mi. Famous decades old cycling event. There are climbs just like thoes. Last two climb of the loop in the last 20miles. Next to last is the Wall( conintenial plate boundary) 2mile/3km about 20% avg after 10+ km along the remote beach into a headwind with it perfectly visible in front of you. Up to coastal wind blown cliff- ridges grasslands. Down insane short steep descent. Not even a km of flat before last 10km climb. Down tricky curvy descent to finish. All on similar types of rough pavement going dirt. Ride done late May/early June historically, September this year.
Do the decent thing Ed, and marry that gal. I'll photograph your wedding 😊. She's a keeper. Great video; watched it all and what an achievement. You inspire me to keep pushing my middle-aged body to the max. Chapeau. David 🇮🇪

well done, a perfect ride - its always tempting to go out too hard early yet this is a marathon so being with groups early kept you under control😀especially when that fit it feels too easy, - were you monitoring your heart rate? top effort! ed I just had a look at your heart rate on strava, there's a lesson in that for all of us, perfect pacing, managed efforts, kept you strong all day, mainly in z2, some 3 just shows you're now the old master at pace judgement. very impressive.
@@edlaverack what's interesting is you had a bit more in the tank (according) to heart rate as most fast fondo type rides I see a more even distribution between z2,3 & 4, say 30%, 50%, 20%. (of course accuracy always an issue with hr - although warmed up they seem pretty consistent - chest strap), just shows how fit you are, hang onto that, also shows excellent hr z2/3 power, as its the key to endurance events. well done.
Hey, the big train will run from London all the way through S.Wales. The closest station will be Port Talbot which is about 3 miles from Margam Park, and there is a standard Premier Inn there, ideal for cyclists.

well done Ed, amazing ride! and what an absolute legend Charlie is!!
Super video, really enjoyed it, lucky to have such a support with you as well
Epic footage on this - would love to try one of the medium routes next year - going for a spin up the Blacks tonight - summer solstice ride !
Great video Ed... great event and captured superbly
absolutley incredible!
Incredible effort Ed and the support team 🙌🙌
I did the medio and I just saw myself come in behind you on the red bike. Can’t believe you finished the dragon at the same time, props 🎉
Love it when a plan comes together! Great team effort, but more so a stupendous effort by yourself, Ed. 👊💥
Awesome Ed - well done mate & great video. Chapeau to Charlie too - what a legend she is. 👌
Absolutely

Welcome to the bug that might have bitten you! I was in the zone lol!
What a great video, very inspiring to get out on the bike, set myself some goals and really go after them. Thanks Ed.
this was great Ed. very easy to watch and pace of the video matched your pace of the bike.
there are a lot of people helping in the background to bring about any success.
Thanks! 👍
Fantastic ride Ed & chapeau to Charlie & the crew.
Some machine you mate 😮
Amazing 👏🏻 I did the gran Fondo in just under 10 hours. Rhigos and Bwlch at the end were killers (particularly when you’re nearly 100kg😅)
Huge respect Jon!
Chapeau in every sense of the word to the whole team. Such a difficult day to plan and more so execute. Great , essential, support network which worked like clockwork. Be proud for you and your team and the plan.
Great video thanks 😊 reminds me of the 12hour time trial, 236miles, 19.7miles ave.😊
Epic ride Ed that was absolutely amazing. Chapeau to yourself, Charlie and the whole of the support team 👏
Truly inspiring. Everyone who does endurance events hopes for a day like you had. That was a lot of fun to watch.
Brilliant ed, and what a performance from charlie!
Well done Ed, hats off to you great effort glad everything clicked into place on the day🎉
I saw this ride on Strava, I couldnt believe the average speed. Fair play to you, that impressive. Well done to your support team as well.
Thanks!

Epic ride Ed, well done. I did the GF this year. Awesome video summary, thank you.
Nice one! Hope you enjoyed it! Thanks for subscribing!

First i'd heard of it bud, but worth sending that feedback, especially if the event gets bigger and bigger!

You should come to France to do the Marmotte .💪👍🤩
Some of those roads ❤👌 I need to do the devils staircase
Anything that involves the Abergwesyn Mountain road and the Blwch y groes on the same day is going to be hard ! no doubt about that :)
It wasn't Bwlch y groes that is North Wales this is a different Bwlch in South Wales, much easier but not after 270 km
Of course !:) Not sure it would be possible to get up to that area and back with the dragon ride format .

I would struggle to ride 298km of a flat road with no climbs in 9hrs.
