      @@dutchik5107 Absolutely, the pronouncer cannot give any information that is not on the card. I guess I was just surprised that the contestant was asking about information that was not on the pronouncer's card.

      @@bendu49100 That could be the case, but the Scripps National Spelling Bee is an incredibly high-stakes U.S. national spelling bee, where contestants prepare for years to compete in. Everyone there is highly motivated to win, and will take any edge they can to understand the asked word. Therefore, they are motivated to ask any question they are allowed to before they attempt to spell it.

    It always fascinated me The fact that English is so detached from his alphabet that you can actually have a competition where the goal is to guess how a word is spelled based on how it is pronounced… it is so weird

      English is not really a coherent language but the merging of 3-4 languages with no real rules on the structure of the word and its pronunciation.

      Right? It's so much better and easier in languages like Turkish where you directly read what you see. Even though I was #1 in middle school in English spelling bee contest in my school, I think all this pronounciation nonsense is just a hindrance.

      I love the turkish language for that reason. But the negative side effect is, that turkish people try to pronounce foreign words exactly how they are written and if they „import“ a word into their language, they change the spelling.

      While for avocat , the 2 works quite well because everyone easily identify an avocat to the person and the fruit

      @@Amylovesvodka except it's a word used to describe a cutting process for making thin slices out of any kind of meat.
      But I give you the point on the fact that chicken is the most common meat to be cut in that way, veal aiguillettes are good too but less common in groceries.

    She actually went to my middle school (I didn’t know her personally as she was two years older) but it was really cool to have all the news stations at the school and we had a huge assembly to congratulate her. It was Rosa International Middle School in NJ.

    Something about a spelling bee just makes me so happy. Every child there has worked their ass off developing niche and specific skills that are SO SO difficult. And they're all so nervous! And their big smiles when they get one right. It honestly makes me so happy to see.

      @@ethancannongonzalez2828 I don't really agree. The spelling itself isnt super useful, but you gain a LOT of other useful skills in learning how to spell well. You learn research, etymology, language and studying skills from learning to spell competitively. Sure none of these kids are going to spell for a living, but the vast majority of kids don't become professional athletes either, that doesnt mean the skills they learn playing sports aren't important.

    It's derived from the Latin aculus, meaning needle, via the French aiguille (not aiglette, which means eaglet!). In English, an aiglet is the hard bit at the end of your shoelaces - often made of metal in older types of lacing. Aiguillette is the braided loops that end in a dangling aiglet, found on military uniforms. In cookery, it just means a long thin strip, presumably resembling military braid in some loose fashion.
    Here endeth the etymology lesson.

      La phonétique est pas du tout construit pareil, la sonorité "ui" ainsi que le "gue" n'est pas très intuitive pour les anglophones. Assemble les deux et ils transforme aiguille en aigouille.
      Bref c'est comme si un chinois se moquait de toi parce que t'es incapable de prononcer des sonorités que tu n'utilise jamais, ta remarque est pas des plus intelligente.

    I wouldn't Know what they were talking about until they mention it comes from French. It is pronounced----- eg_ee_yet----- (aiguillette) direved from ----eg_ee_y---- (aigille) not ----eg_oo_let----. The kid seems to pronounce -----aiguille better than he can.

It's an appreciative skill, a vocabulary enhancer, the way you spewed nonsense; aty we shouldn't have vocab and Grammer lessons in our curriculum. About science.... 🤣 surely a noob with non-science background can spit sh!ts like that. Science is bound to rise and there are enough personells in the world for doing the research and stuff. Rather than discrediting her talent, make an attempt to get a government job at first 😆 that'll be enough for ya.

      @@itzllz6270 I'm more successful in my life than you ever imagined 😂 and I never said spell bee is easy (I know it's very very tough) but it doesn't seem worthy enough to spend hours for memorizing spellings, it has less practical use (comparitively to the effort needed)later in life. Try to take different opinions in a cool way before judging about other's life buddy 😅 (I can't stop laughing while reading your comment 😌 poor child!)

    As a Frenchman I can say that all the "French" words she uses as examples do not exist. But I am still impressed that she can spell this word that is not even in her language! Hats off to her!

      She mixed up epaule and aiguille (made a connection and brain convinced her she was right) but the 'peak' one she did kind of get it exactly right!

    This girl is so amazing. I am going to be in my district’s spelling bee. I am a 5th grader who won my class spelling bee of 20 kids, and I won second place in my school spelling bee with the 20 middle schoolers. Wish me luck, it’s on January 19th!

    I love how English speakers don't stop at having completely arbitrary pronounciation of letters and syllabus but for these contests they even go out of their ways to insert words in a foreign language that they can't pronounce correctly. This goes straight up with that other judge asking to spell "negus" while pronouncing it as the n word

      Not true at all. The second part, at least. A very small number of languages have a high grapheme-to-phoneme and phoneme-to-grapheme correspondence. Even fewer have true phonemic orthography. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonemic_orthography#Comparison_between_languages
