  • 2016 Ford Explorer just testing out how good or bad the 4wd system is.
    To my surprise the mud / ruts mode worked the best. It applied the brake to the wheel slipping the most almost instantly.

    Great test! IME mud & rut is the best mode for locking all the wheels in. This is a really great AWD system.

      We recently just had a bunch of snow and cold weather. Unfortunately I couldn’t do more tests. But I was on a road that had ice on one side and pavement on the other side. In Auto mode the wheels on the ice spun a lot but I still had some forward movement. It’s pretty cool how it works. If there wasn’t a car behind me I would have stopped and put it in mud and ruts to see if it had minimal wheel spin. Maybe next time.

      It's actually 4WD as there are many more "options" as shown in this video that AWD systems don't offer.

    This is an underrated 4WD system (my wife drives a 2018 Sport, and it does fantastic in the heavy snow and ice we get in Minnesota). Too bad the Explorer isn't a true off-road vehicle as it was in the past.

      Most Jeep or Bronco drivers don't ever put their vehicles in a good off road test. I think its way more fun to off road a normal car. I took my 2016 Exploder to an off road park. Most other vehicles were actual ATV or side by sides. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy as my car was only about 8 months old when I took it to this park. I had a blast doing river crossings and off roading it. Only think I needed to be careful as my oil pan is exposed. Other than that I did crazy climbs and downhill obstacles including river crossing.

    In the mud/rut mode you can see the ABS engaging the front left & back right brakes to move the power over to the other cross axle aspect. Very cool

    I have the 2017 sport and coupled with Goodyear's Weatheready's, the intelligent 4wd was unstoppable in the snow/mode, absolutely incredible. I literally tried to get stuck in 2.5ft snow to above the bumper on an unplowed street for 2 blocks and it did not get stuck. I purposefully stopped in the 2.5ft of snow to see how it would do burried, without momentum and it got going without a problem. Did really well with slushy crap that drags your car left or right, better than anyone else I saw on the roads, including 4wd pickups. ABS/traction control is predictable and gives you just enough of a sensation that you need to slow down before it corrects yet kn normal 2-3 inch packed/unpacked snow I could launch it like on pavement lol. Turning off traction control I'm able to drift in snow covered parking lot but the anti roll system can't be turned off and kills the fun.
    Tip1: snow mode gives the throttle pedal a lot less sensitivity/response to limit low end torque, making it easier to feather the gas when starting out. I also call it "wife/fuel sipper mode" as I don't see her jolting her head all over when I leave stop lights lol Tip2: Best launches are obtained in sport mode in combination with sand mode whilst doing a brake stand. Don't use the paddles, it'll shift for you. Sand mode gives the snappiest throttle response, awful for city/ with the wife driving.
    Have yet to tow our 20ft enclosed festherlight, but its has the same engine as the F150 of same year-ish so towing isnt a problem, obivously less tongue weight in comparison. Will be offroading this summer w/ Truxx 2.5" lift and 255/70/17's, so we'll see how that goes!

    The biggest thing I notice with the intelligent 4wd system is in situations like this (vs driving down the road) when certain tires lose traction, the system takes 5-10 seconds to vector the power to the wheels that have traction. Now my 01 F150 didn't have a limited slip so, you lost traction on the front left and back right, you were done for, regardless how long you wanted to spin them for, w/ limited slip diffs being a bit more helpful.
    I feel like an appropriate summary of this vehicles intelilegent 4wd is this: primarily front 2wd, but also 4wd as needed and when that doesn't work, it's got the ultimate AWD/ABS assist. Incredible how far things have come since the 2000's.

    • @EverydayCars
      @EverydayCars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I noticed in mud and ruts it reacts a lot faster. In all other mode there is a significant delay applying the brake to the slipping wheel.

    I use to have a 17 toyota rav4 awd. I took that thing down jeep trails in the mountains. 3 wheeling the crap out of it. Had the rear tire 3 feet off the ground couple of times. But one thing it struggled with is tire spin. Fords intelligent 4wd and how the abs locks one side to send power to the other is pretty amazing. I have a 17 explorer sport. (Family got bigger so rav had to go)

    Great video! So would you say the "Auto" mode is an AWD system? and the "modes" are the real 4WD?

    • @EverydayCars
      @EverydayCars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is no transfer case so it’s not a “real” 4wd system. But I’m auto mode from a stop it always powers the front and back wheels and once getting up to speed it sends power to the front to save fuel. Snow mode does the same thing. Mud & ruts and Sand mode send power to all wheels all the time. So they are like a truck in 4 hi.

  • @wildbill23c
    @wildbill23c 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Because the old manual shift transfer case with 2WD, high and low range was just way too damn hard LOL. Never needed all those modes, when it was in 4WD it was in 4WD the truck didn't care what you were driving on.
    My Explorer just has auto high and low, that's plenty of options LOL.

    • @EverydayCars
      @EverydayCars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yea I hear yea, but what’s nice about electronics is how it simulates a locking diff without having one. Now it’s definitely not as good as a true locker but it does help give you a lot of extra traction when needed. I wish this explorer did have a low range but this is no true off roading vehicle anyways.
