    Bro thank you so much for this information. I'm at a point in my life where I can't stand the 9-5 anymore and am determined to make my lifetime love for music production a successful and profitable career, one way or another.

    I'm 20 minutes into your video, and I can't stop watching. I've been writing and producing music for 20 years now. I've always wanted to learn how to get into the SYNC world, but felt like it was a big mystery. Thank you for putting this together, I'm looking forward to everything I'll learn by the end of all your videos.

    I really love your channel. I went to a music conference late last year, and I received a ton of information that was similar, but it was so convoluted. They made it so difficult to follow, but you're giving us an orderly concise of each step we need to take. Thanks!

    this is some GREAT advice. really appreciate the information you have
    given. me and my buddy chris are creating some (in our opinion)
    different sounds that we think would sound good in some movies or tv
    shows. we've just started a youtube channel with a few basic videos
    uploaded. we're really just intrested in getting our sounds out there.
    if any of you beautiful people fancy having a listen and leaving a
    comment or 2 telling us what you think. do you think any of our music
    would work in the movies/tv/games. peace love n happiness. and thanks
    again for this groovy information.

    You described me to a T. Left the industry 31 years ago - got a degree family, career. Lost it all and am in no different position than I was, 30 years ago, except, it has been absent music creating. Oddly, my career choice was computers and IT and now the two (music and technology) have evolved together very nicely. What I'm discovering is my music feels complete before ever adding a vocal, so someone said "theme song", etc... Then I stumble across you... Weird....

    I'm glad I see you appear on youtube again. I once contacted thru email when I lived in Los Angeles 3years ago. As I had some family matters and I am now in Thailand. I play lead guitar bass drum some key board back up playing. I think I can make all the stuff that once you explained the kind of music in demands. Well I am a bit slow in internet things which I am studying fast and improving. I used to compose lots of intros solos bridges writing songs but in English so far I do only 6 gospel songs. Any way my question is to work with those companies in America from Thailand or any restrictions ?

    You have some great videos, I know a lot of the basics, but you have said some things that are common sense, but they really resonated with me, for example at around the 11 min mark, being a musician, trying to go against where the market wants to take you, common sense, but a very big revelation for me- THANK YOU! Have you considered starting your own licensing/placement company, taking on a catalogue of other creators?

  • @oggfish

    Thanks for doing this video. Can upfront payments also include payments for musicians you need to hire and/or time you spend changing a song to their liking? I can imagine composers doing good sounding (partially) midi productions and that the music library wants to change some parts into real musicians. For acoustic or hybrid music it seems not doable to hire musicians for every instrument if there is not a upfront payment. Specially if you are new to the business. How do things like that work?

    • @SyncMyMusic
      @SyncMyMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can certainly pay instrumentals and vocalists to add to your tracks with work-for-hire agreements. If the Library does offer consideration fees, you could use that towards paying them. If not, you'd need to pay them out of your pocket and recoup with the Sync Fees and royalties earned down the road.

    First, I hope everyone out your way is alright after the Mandalay Bay\Route 91 tragedy that occurred on October 1, 2017. Prayers for you, your family and anyone involved as Las Vegas heals. That said, I want to say thank you for this course. This is the only one I've seen of it's kind. Even after paying for semesters in music academia and attending the workshops of the "industry" leaders, no one could quite bridge the gap from what you've learned or already know, to actually enjoying a sustainable income that not only pays you on the front end, it affords a viable income for years. The persisting income, in turn, gives you the opportunity to pursue other profitable projects. And because you know you will have a steady paycheck, It frees you up to collaborate on charitable projects as well. It is not often, someone will share the knowledge and template that made them successful. It is a rarity for someone to do it for free. And it is a once in a lifetime occurrence when someone like Jesse selflessly does it all with a concise effective workingman's approach, that will show you how to build a career in this frequently changing sometimes unrecognizable music industry of today. I thank you from the bottom of my heart Jesse, for what I have learned and for the success I enjoy now and will continue to enjoy. See you on the other side!

    quick question, if I have written songs, albums, etc., both instrumental and with vocals and they are already legally copyrighted, with fees paid, etc., or and in BMI or anything else as such, can I still 'license' them with music libraries? That license term is what confuses me. Thanks for the info. Saw your 5 crash course videos, love them and you are very genuine, thanks for your support. Hope to hear from you!

    • @SyncMyMusic
      @SyncMyMusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, if you own the songs then you can license them to a music library. The issue is that the library will likely need you to rename the tracks so that they can re-register the tracks with their publishing company name attached to it (with BMI, etc.).

    I watched this entire video but I feel like I lost the "HOW" part. Is it that shows/movies pick up music through the PROs or do you submit songs you have registered with a PRO through a database somewhere else? I'm still confused.

    • @SyncMyMusic
      @SyncMyMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      2-3 tracks minimum should be ready to go, but a full 10 or 12 track album is a much stronger pitch.

    Jesse, on day 2 video you state you need to sign over the copyrights to yours songs for placement. It's my understanding the 'Mechanical Rights' are the only rights that need to be agreed to.

    • @SyncMyMusic
      @SyncMyMusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mechanical Rights in the US refer to the reproduction and distribution of music (applicable when you are selling albums, CDs, downloads, etc.). Libraries will want Masters & Copyrights transfered to their publishing company because it provides for the easiest path to get you as many placements as possible. Otherwise, new contracts would have to be drafted for every single licensing opportunity (potentially hundreds year).

    You're a wonderful person for sharing your knowledge for free like this man. Really valuable stuff here. Can I ask you - Do you have a personal website where you will have a playlist of your works in addition to having them show up on Music Libraries? Not asking for the link or anything. I'm just wondering if creating a personal website with my tracks is valuable or not :)

      Sorry for the delayed response, but yes it's a GREAT idea to create your own site to showcase your work. It's not necessary, but it helps add to your legitimacy in the eyes of a music library.

    Hey great video. I rarely have the patience to watch for 30 minutes. You're a really good speaker.
    How does this compare with creating stock audio like Shutterstock or is it the same thing?

      Thanks Mate:) one more question.....for now :) when your bandmates were having to get sucky day jobs....were you already submitting music and getting paid? or did you have to work at first also to support yourself financial? once again thanks for your awesome vids!!

      I did some independent contract work to make ends meet - I shot and edited video for corporate clients. I also DRASTICALLY reduced my living expenses which helped me get closer to full-time income faster.

      It's great that you didn't have to get a job you hated but you did other forms of creative work in order to get where you are now....im the same in that i drastically reduced my expenses to bare minimum!...im definitely buying your directory book and if you want i can put a link to it on my upcoming website,only if you want :) I've done very high quality music in the past and even though they were really well produced and mixed/mastered they were "to melodic and busy" and distracted the lister of the advertisement (they are actually re done now and most are songs)) Big Lesson Learn't ! no need to reply mate........i know your busy.

    I have a specific question and I don't know if you've answered it yet in the comments. What about the idea of a two-pronged approach: A) the hail-mary "rock star" approach with your best music *and* B) the slow-and-steady licensing longevity approach with your B-side material?
    A) isn't just hoping and praying - I mean going hard on internet content creation and promotion, giving away your best free music, making TH-cam vids, blog posts, Twitter and Facebook social sharing, creatively monetizing your "branded" audience for your music and crossing your fingers that something goes viral, blows up, etc... shooting for big 10k-person live shows and 50K festival stages as the brass ring.
    and at the same time B) using your good-but-second-best material for licensing, since only a few seconds are usually used in most placements?
    I think this could be good and fit my workflow. What are your thoughts?
    EDIT: Ok you touch on this near the end, thanks

    • @SyncMyMusic
      @SyncMyMusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like that you're thinking of adding a plan B to your strategy! It all depends on how much time you spend on the "rockstar" side of things - that is obviously a full-time gig in itself. With licensing it's not always as simple as just throwing your "B" material at a Library - most times you will have to CREATE new tracks specifically requested by a Library. If you can find a way to dedicate some time to both, then I say go for it!

      Yes, you can do this from anywhere in the world - but if you want to work in the US, I recommend you join BMI or ASCAP.

      So now you need to create licensable tracks and submit to some libraries.
