You know, I ordered the full set and after seeing them ship this week I was having my doubts. Thankfully, this totally honest take assured me I've purchased what might be some of the best enamels ever made.
What are the odds. I just ordered some Wargames Atlantic kits to kitbash and the full set of these all for the sole purpose of painting them for Trench Crusade!

I think so. I had multiple, hours long conversations with Zatcaskagoon about the project in a span of a year now. I know he has put immense love in these. Of course he asked me to make it a honest video, and I pointed out what I think could be better from my subjective point of view. But I received a bunch of messages telling me that they love how subtle Sector Rust is, and that they prefer the more forgiving working time. So that makes me think, how much our taste can vary!
I have definitely found it difficult to use ichor of the damned and goon's grime so far. I did mix with some mineral spirits and it seemed to not cover that heavily but also dried really glossy. Even two coats of AK ultra matte hasn't killed the gloss in the recesses.. I think I need to spend some more time to practice but dilute it more and build up layers per the vid. I get the sense these are not the heavy handed, quick and dirty tools like some of the AK washes we are used to. More skill but perhaps ultimately more control and modulation.
These look and sound amazing! I'll defiantly have to pick some up as I love the way you have painted those minis. Out of interest which one out of the set is your favourite?
I would say the Goon's Grime + Carrion Crimson combo is unbeatable. Grimdark flesh in no time and fun to do. Goon's Grime is pretty much the most versatile and easy to use. Carrion Crimson requires a little bit more attention as it's a Flesh Effect. If you go to the Grimdark Compendium you can find a Resource Page where you can find all the info, how-to's, and free video tutorial demos for every Villainy Ink paint so you can see what you like best, if you're unsure.
Lovely video, quite informative. I like that the paints have somewhat differing material characteristics and are not just different shades of the main competing brands. Goon is bringing a genuinely new product to the market and I'm very curious to try it out.
Great video, and actually honest. You don't see that much these days. While I'm a fan of AK's stuff thanks to this channel, I likely won't get a whole set - but maybe goons grime and the ichor of the damned!
This video is absolutely a must-watch before utilizing this paint range. I know that I would have been very upset going in to using them, and discovering blindly that they don't behave like other enamels. They require a bit of setup and delicate use, it seems, instead of just being a slather-n-wipe range. That being said, I'm extremely excited to get my set and use them. Even the mild rust effects will be a welcome addition, so I can have a more subtle effect when I want it. Especially compared to how aggressive Dirty Down rust is, it'll be nice to also have a more subtle option.
Eh I know what you're talking about! But at the end, if you think about it, that's how we felt years ago when we tried enamels for the first time. This is like a new beginning, learning something new, or rather - using our knowledge to make use of a similar product that has a slightly different behavior. I mean, they feel familiar anyway. But indeed can't be used with the same exact "go to town" mentality. Absolutely, I actually think the Sector Rust hue is great, and what you say there is totally true. Using ONLY Dirty Down blows away any element of subtlety.
I have yet to try out the inks (they grin at me from across the table as I type), but this showcase already gives me confidence with their application. I've been holding on my Flesh Eaters project until they arrive, and I'm looking forward to trying them out for the skin especially! Thanks for the in-depth video.
Thanks for the review. I will start painting my vampire counts army as soon as my white primer is delivered, because GW Grey Seer seems to be too dark IMO. Can't wait for it to begin.

Right? What's your experience? I had quite a few people reaching out to me after they watched the video, and they told me they disagree with my critique of Sector Rust. So that's all a matter of taste I guess! Yes they need some time to get used to.
Great tutorial from somebody giving an honest review of first time use. Irons out problems for the rest of us. My head says yes to these enamels but my bank balance says no. Then my head says yes again but I might wait until the current orders have been sent.
I really like the texture most of all. It gives a realistic grime that just seems too efficient not to try, especially since the price is right. How do the paints react to acrylic paint or contrast medium going over them? I know some enamels and inks can reactivate, so I'd like to know my order of operations before trying it out.
If let dry properly, there's no issue coming over with acrylics or contrast paints. Enamels can be removed with water (with a very particular effect) but that happens if you really go there with lots of water and do your absolute best to remove them. However as I was saying if you let your enamel layers dry, you'll have no issues at all.
Goon's Grime is definitely sticky and oily. I've tried thinning with mineral spirits, but it doesn't make it not sticky, just thinner. Still, it does look great.
@@GrimdarkCompendium I do have a mixer. I'm still experimenting. Some of the models I tested on were not thinned and just shaken. So I'm still dealing with those. I'm testing some more stuff with well shaken and thinned Grime. I do wonder if the sticky stuff just needs more curing time.
Looks good… But never used enamels so far. I use oil colours and white spirit to mix the washes I need, in the consistency I need them. So I’m curious about your product. Can you please tell me if there is any difference between them and oil washes and what makes it so special? What’s the fuzz all about, because it seems everyone can’t await to get this stuff? 😅 It can’t be only because of the cool label and bottle layouts.
Of course! Oils and enamels share some similarities. Like mixing with Mineral spirits for example, and they can both be used to create either crevice washes or filters, and them removed. However enamels have fast drying times under a blow dryer, they typically dry matte, and they leave a "grainy" effect. Enamel filters/washes let you have a granular level of control over the removal as you see in the video. Also, some of these enamels are more technical (like the flesh washes) and contain stray pigments, dry satin, and other nuances like that. Oils are great! As you can use them dry or mix them how you want. However it's a different product. And even thinned down, an oil wash won't give you the same level of rendition and control that an enamel gives you
Question for you guys: you use qtips to pull enamel off, do reusable ones work or is there a workable substitute for qtips? Trying to find something that doesn't fall apart so easy and leave bits behind

Yes. Ecspeically when the rest of the line comes out. The color range will be modeled after popular acrylic wash lines. The main difference will be that Villainy Ink Enamels can be removed/cleaned up with the reductive technique.
Hey mate nice vid! I pre ordered a batch of these paints so hopefully they arrive soon. I really like the mottled texture from the cool and warm skin washes you got. Just had question about painting in this style, does it translate to an army eg like playing on tt during the day or in a well lit hall or the like? Or does the effect get too washed out when it’s not surrounded by dark background? Cheers
Thank you! I play skirmish and wargames and I often use the miniatures I paint for the tutorials. With surface finish variation I find that the models really get more noticeable on the table. However it's always important to integrate some elements in the miniature that will be the main focus (from a modeling and painting standpoint) so they'll look distinguishable in all environments.
Ahh gotcha, yeah I see this grimdark style on yt tutorials or showcases but I’ve never seen it out in the wild yunno. While it does look awesome with a dark background and correct lighting it always gives me pause to try it on an entire army but I see what your saying about a focal point or points, maybe I’ll try on a necromunda gang or similar before a whole army! Keep the vids coming mate there very informative and you explain yourself well 👏

You don't have to. People saying that "enamels chips the acrylic paint underneath" is because they are to harsh with the reductive technique: q-tips are pretty abrasive, so you have to be gentle. Enamels have no interactions with acrylics.
I am still a little bit confused about the product. Is this an oil wash or an ink with mediums to behave like oil + mineral spirits? How long is the drying time? How long can you reactivate it (blend or remove with qtip)? Thanks in advance!
No problem! These are enamel washes. They share some similarities with oil washes, but are different. The drying time depends on the amount of mineral spirits used when mixing. If mixed properly it dries within seconds under a hair dryer, so immensely faster than an oil wash. Reactivating time varies but it's pretty long and forgiving. Of course there's difference between dry and cure. So when it's dry (seconds/minutes, with a hair dryer), it can be reactivated very easily. As it starts the curing process (24+ hours) it's gonna be harder to reactivate but still possible if you want to a degree. And when it's fully cured it's gonna stay there, unless you come with some very aggressive solvent like Isopropyl Alcohol 99%.

I see a lot of interesting mottling done with brush, as well as feathering. Dark Ages mentions using a clean brush, does that mean that the mottling/feathering is done WITHOUT white spirits? I.e. like with oils?
Mostly WITHOUT. However on the Trench Crusade miniature, after the Goon's Grime q-tip mineral spirit removal, I did a very short sneaky pass with a brush slightly dampened (unloaded 90% of wet agent on my glove). It comes as a natural process. It's really enjoyable, but mostly, I do it with a clean and dry soft brush.

I got my inks in the post and have tried them on a Khorne bloodletter, they are loads of fun, however they do seem to be taking a long time to dry, it's been a couple of days and still not dry, i'm assuming thats normal given the nature of the medium though? First impressions are very positive.
Been testing the inks for a a few days, but I’m still getting a lot more glossy finishes with ichor and goons, especially in recesses. I mix them about 2:1 ink and abt502 odorless thinner and it is already pretty light. Does this happen because of too thick layers at once from the airbrush? I’m used to blasting the mini with ak enamels
Yeah, also make sure to clear the pipette and shake the hell out of them. A cortex mixer is highly recommended. Ifnapplying through an airbrush, do light layers. They are not heavy effects like ak and are meant to be used more lightly.

Do you have batch 1 or 2? Batch 1 is indicated by the craft boxes they came in, and batch 2 has full art boxes. In either case, it sounds like a mixing issue. I suggest a vortex mixer. By design, the Decay of Death should dry very powdery and should be used in conjunction with a pigment fixer if you want to stick to surfaces.
I think I received a mix of batch 1 and batch 2. Some had stickers that didn’t cover the full box and some covered the full box. I have a vortex mixture and have mixed extensively as well as clear all clogs in dropper nozzles. I have taken detailed notes of my process. My intention is to send you an email in full detail along with photographs. Tried multiple different methods of working with the product to achieve a safe to touch result but no success so far.
Have tested the full range as well for more clarity: Carrion Crimson, Coelia Green, Dystopian Brown, Ichor of the Damned, Decay of Death and Goon’s Grime.

Will 70% ethanol thin them? Safer than mineral spirits.
Also flash heating flammable mineral spirits is not only grimdark, but really damn dangerous.

I see a lot of interesting mottling done with brush, as well as feathering. Dark Ages mentions using a clean brush, does that mean that the mottling/feathering is done WITHOUT white spirits? I.e. like with oils?
Mostly WITHOUT. However on the Trench Crusade miniature, after the Goon's Grime q-tip mineral spirit removal, I did a very short sneaky pass with a brush slightly dampened (unloaded 90% of wet agent on my glove). It comes as a natural process. It's really enjoyable, but mostly, I do it with a clean and dry soft brush.

I got my inks in the post and have tried them on a Khorne bloodletter, they are loads of fun, however they do seem to be taking a long time to dry, it's been a couple of days and still not dry, i'm assuming thats normal given the nature of the medium though? First impressions are very positive.
Make sure you are shaking them really well and thinning well with mineral spirits.
Do u have to varnish those after they dried?
Are the flecks on the carrion and coelia an intended feature or an QC issue?
I heard from him and they're absolutely intended, to create variations on surfaces. However, there's a method to avoid them, if unwanted.
Intended for Mottling purposes. If you want to avoid them you can do so on your palette.

Been testing the inks for a a few days, but I’m still getting a lot more glossy finishes with ichor and goons, especially in recesses. I mix them about 2:1 ink and abt502 odorless thinner and it is already pretty light. Does this happen because of too thick layers at once from the airbrush? I’m used to blasting the mini with ak enamels
Yeah, also make sure to clear the pipette and shake the hell out of them. A cortex mixer is highly recommended. Ifnapplying through an airbrush, do light layers. They are not heavy effects like ak and are meant to be used more lightly.

Hmmm for some reason my goons grim doesnt look grimy when it dries but looks dusty. Applied exactly as you suggested. Not sure what im doing wrong 🤔
Goon's Grime should dry matte when thinned. Try using less or no thinner. And shake the bottle very well. Use a vortex mixer if you have it.

I purchased the full range (except rust) and have been running tests on these products. I am having issues with curing. When visibly dry, the surface quality becomes powdery and rubs off with very light touch. Bad for gaming.
I have a test model that has been drying for multiple days and is still wet to touch.
My recent test bits have dried for 3 hours and the powdery surface is the results.
Are you able to confirm that the products continue to dry and harden past the powdery surface quality stage?
Do you have batch 1 or 2? Batch 1 is indicated by the craft boxes they came in, and batch 2 has full art boxes. In either case, it sounds like a mixing issue. I suggest a vortex mixer. By design, the Decay of Death should dry very powdery and should be used in conjunction with a pigment fixer if you want to stick to surfaces.
I think I received a mix of batch 1 and batch 2. Some had stickers that didn’t cover the full box and some covered the full box.
I have a vortex mixture and have mixed extensively as well as clear all clogs in dropper nozzles. I have taken detailed notes of my process. My intention is to send you an email in full detail along with photographs. Tried multiple different methods of working with the product to achieve a safe to touch result but no success so far.
Have tested the full range as well for more clarity: Carrion Crimson, Coelia Green, Dystopian Brown, Ichor of the Damned, Decay of Death and Goon’s Grime.

Nah, nothing new i cannot do with an oil wash and i hate the texture they leave behind.
