Please try using a wood bridge, I believe there’s a strong change it would sound even better. It’s really what drives the sound into the body. Also, it’s best to string the two outer strings first for simpler tuning.
Wonder if wood filament would work for the bridge so that you can keep with the printed theme.

A quick Google search said beginner quality violins are generally $300-600 (I haven't checked my local stores, so there may be some price difference).
A 3D printed violin (that doesn't suck) that is cheaper than a traditional violin can really give more people access to this kind of stuff without breaking the bank.
The Hovalin is an awesome project! We have 4 of them floating around the house. One did fail after about 2 yrs. My suspicion is it got dropped, but no one is confessing to anything. However the 2 we had at MRRF 2019 are still in action! I have a remixed version on Printables with smooth waist, which prints with less supports. Enjoy!

Great video. Your child did great on camera and I'm sure you're proud of her progress. A friendly tip from a long time violinist, adding support under the violin to enable her to hold the violin with her chin and without the support of her palm will get rid of any pressed sound and make it clearer on any violin she plays. If she has to hold the violin up with her palm then it forces a compressed sound not allowing the strings to vibrate to their fullest. Add that little tip and she'll be playing like a pro!

Bryan... I just had another thought. Maybe you might like to run this experiment: Seeing as how a violin has always traditionally been a WOOD instrument, How could one sound if printed in WOOD PLA?

Bryan you do know we all skipped to the end to watch a proper Artist at work!
I printed a hybrid violin a few years back; the bridge was Maple and the sound-post Birch while every other part was printed.
I hired a Lutheir to make and install the wooden bits!
It was a replica of a traditional instrument, not a Hovalin.
I paid special attention to the front and back plates: I came up with printer settings (cheap PLA) that produced plates that sounded like 'sound-wood' when dropped on the floor!
Bright, clear and loud...they sounded nearly identical to samples of Maple!
The plates were much heavier than wood; the plates need to be very thick, but the tonal qualities were a very good match.
Printer settings: Plates were 7mm thick(!) with two 0.4mm perimeters, very dense infill (40% cubic pattern), thin top and bottom layers...much more infill than skin!
How did it sound?
The high string was a bit muted with no sustain, middle to low strings 'filled the room' with sound!
Not a musician, don't remember which string is who by name.

Before I start, let me first say that the violin, hands down, IS my favorite instrument. Hearing your "talented offspring" play the violin is encouraging and gives me hope in the human race. I think you should have more videos end with the newest playing from "talented offspring". I would like to see and hear her play her other violins and the same pieces on the blue 3D-printed violin for comparison.

Brings back some memories from around 1975 when I stopped playing...
The sound is pretty good for a 3D printed instrument. At least as good as the very cheap Chinese wooden violin I used to learn on.
I agree with the comment below about trying a wooden bridge, a slightly different profile would probably help with the crossing as well.
A big hello and thank you to your daughter, It would have been almost pointless to have printed a violin and then no-one play it. Your playing made this episode fantastic. I hope you continue to enjoy the music and violin.

that does sound pretty good for a 3D printed acoustic instrument. it's good you have a talented offspring to handle the testing!
I almost forgot!
The Havolin will hold up much longer than a traditional design.
The bridge and other features of the trad violin put stress on the print that will lead to mechanical failure.
The instrument 'lived' for less than two weeks before the upper plate collapsed due to bridge-pressure.
Un-stringing the instrument wasn't really an option; it would take a day or so for a change in string tension to 'settle in'; it didn't hold tune very well at all.
Plus it was highly sensitive to changes in temperature; handling it for too long changed the tuning noticeably.

Great project! First thought that come to mind was I could let me kid go full rock star and smash his instrument at the end of a performance, and be able to print a new one for minimal cost.
I guess you could do that and then harvest the strings to use in a reprint. 😅
Thank you for this wonderful video. It made me subscribe to your channel. I am currently learning to play the violin, but I am not yet as good as your daughter. I would love to hear a back to back playing comparison of your Hovalins and her wood violin.
This was a lot better than the Video on the Hova site. I can appreciate that the violin actually does sound OK, although yes, tinny. Note that Hova allows you to print a 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, or 4/4 violins, so you can create increasingly bigger violins as your children grow. I'd say this is great for students. And the fact that the student can choose the color helps them appreciate the art of music. I'd like to hear what a PLA-CF violin sounds like. It seems to me that would be the best medium.

I actually applauded the little Lady's Performance and her father's skill as well. Now a filament that matches her hair? :-)
And now I want her teacher to play on it and giver her or his judgement.
It did sound surprisingy well for now and I wonder how much better or worse it stays in tune for example outside in humid conditions, changing temperature and such also after 'aging of the filament' in which it can absorb moisture for a while.
A nice test with multiple weather-conditions would be nice!
It's no Strad but it surprisingly sounds like a violin.
Gonna have to start printing a 3/4 size now so that when my daughter outgrows her 1/2 size it will be ready for her!

Ok, color me impressed. Also, your daughter plays really well. Also, it would have been nice if she could also played a regular wood violin for tone comparison, though I have to admit, if I closed my eyes, I would have assumed the sparkly one was actually wood.

sounds like the design didn't call for the sound post and bass board on the inside of the body, that normal violins have, but DANG, that is a really clean and bright sounding violin! it has some serious potential! more and more i see things that make me want to go out and buy a printer... and this one of them now...

Try printing it with PLA-CF, you'll be amazed at the difference it makes to the sound. I'm thinking something like colorfabb Vibers would also work, but haven't tested that and it might be too soft.

I'm keen to hear carbon fibre pla or nylon. They would be very different from each other. I think the cf nylon will have a dead sound but be very durable. The cf pla might have a nice hollow woody sound as is very stiff.

I just got a new violin and I'm going to be playing again. I know this 3D printed violin will be nothing compared to a nice wood one but I might have to try printing it anyway just for fun.

Wonder if you could print wood filament for inside stuff to see how it would sound like a closer tambre to traditional wood.
It would be very interesting to hear how the Hovalin sounds using a material with a higher stiffness/modulus/resonance, ie; maybe carbon-filled nylon...
First of all awesome video I like the concept of 3D printed instruments I read somewhere that the also had a 3D printed Ukulele called Hovalele but sadly the don’t offer it anymore on there side do you know why ?

also, if this can be done in bulk, it would be a sea change in music ed. One of the main hurdles in getting band or orchestra programs is the upfront instrument costs.

Considering material elasticity I wonder what a more stiff violin printed out PC would sound like, since PC from my experience is very resonant I wander how different the sound would. Also as some have mentioned I would implore the use of a real wooden bridge as that is the primary means of transporting the sound to the chamber and with that thick printed bridge i would believe some of the harmonics of the different sounds are getting absorbed by the unnecessary mass on the plastic bridge.
Tell your daughter she should be super proud of her talent and she should stick with what she loves no matter what.
Also I’d really like to know what songs she was playing so I can go find some recordings. Violins are really such a rich instrument they stand on their own.

I suppose the fine tuning is a bit harder, with a fixed strings in the "big end". Normally there are a fine-tune in the "big end" too.
I agree with the blue violin sounding more "soft and pleased.

I stopped playing the violin around 1975 - exams, starting work electronics and such like took it's place.
It was common for the E string to have an "adjuster" a small screw activated lever for fine tuning attached, to the tailpiece. It was less common to have adjusters on all strings. This was because the tension on the E string was high and the tuning pegs were just simple pegs pushed through holes either side of the peg box. One wrong tweak on the peg and the E string would snap - I must have broken dozens of E strings, but only one A, and I don't recall seeing a G or D breaking while tuning. The geared tuning pegs would have made life a lot easier!

You are correct about conventional wood violins having fine tuners at the tailpiece, but the reason that this Hovalin does not use tailbpiece fine tuners is that it uses geared guitar/ukelele tuners instead of standard violin tuning pegs.
next: get those people with the 6 foot tall 3d uv resin printer to print you up a base. bass? the giant violin thing. ;-)
