Bob Mintzer. The Real Deal. One of the greatest tenor players on the scene....good to hear Jaco's son...
instaBlaster...
Jeff Coffin proceeds through the airport security checkpoint. The officer instructs Mr Coffin to additional screening. Scanning his whole body with a metal detector, the officer asks, "what metal object do you have in your mouth?" Jeff tells the officer, "oh, that's my jaw bone.."
This is unbelievable, Coffin really rips in the beginning. I feel like he's kind of in the middle of a Redman and a James Carter... Still keeps his musicality and melodic improvisation but can still make it dirty and unique.
Jeff Coffin's solo here is AMAZING. WOW. WOW. Just one more time: WOW.
They're coming to our school in March and we're playing this same tune with them!
Not sure if anyone said so already, but this is actually "Tall And Lanky" from Jeff's Go-Round album.
Just loved this.
I want more.
I wish I hadn't shoved my tenor under my bed and forgot about it for 10 years.
Just maybe, I could aspire to play like Jeff or Bob.
These guys can really play.
Hi Lawrence, same happened to me (for 4 or 5 years)! If someone is still alive, it.s never too late. We mustn.t quarrel with the fate, it is, like it is. Out of the grave, we can start every day new. That.s what I do actually, nearly starting @ zero, but it.s great, to do it!! I work with basics, the course of Bill Evans "Language of Improvisation" by true fire, great!!!... and with Bob Mintzers books. Much slower than he does, but I do. That makes it count. Kind regards from Henry, Germany
Can i have or buy your sax lawrence?
that was tight when they changed to straight ahead swing at around 6:36
Intense performance. I'm not really into jazz but I can appreciate it. I played in a dance band with Felix Pastorious in Florida, and my dad grew up playing music with Bob Mintzer and Tito Puente. These guys really know their instruments. Nice crowd there too.
How cool is it that Bob's sharing the platform with the son of Jaco (Word of Mouth). Man I would've loved to be there. Jeff Apt Q-258 Sipe on drums. Kofi on keys as well. WOW!
Fun jam. Looks like everyone really enjoyed themselves. Fun to watch. Seen Jeff play quite a few times, loved seeing him in Miami with Charlie hunter, he can really play, and certainly has that jam/funk thing down as good as anyone. I really dig Bobs style, having fun, just steps in kills it. Just more like my personality is all.
Bret: always distributing gifts! Thank you!
bretttttt thanks for thissssss!!!! I can't hit the add to favorites button enough times !!!!
You give me the opportunity to hear great musicians even here, in some lil' town in the south of spain ...
I saw Jeff Coffin in concert at a Jazz Festival earlier this year, I've been a huge fan ever since. It's really inspired me to continue with my Alto Saxophone and continue to get better. I love jazz because of its freedom and the way you can express yourself. Jeff Coffin has become one of my idols.
Nothing I enjoy more than watching a good tenor man smile while he is playing...... 11:40
Kudos to the drummer too!!!!
Thanks for the music
Thanks for watching/listening/being.
Jeff is good, but mintzer light a fire to this tune. And he even threw in "the lick" at 6:53
@sfaisal20077 Thanks for reminding me: Jeff Sipe, drums; Kofi Burbridge, keyboards, Bill Fanning, trumpet and introducing Felix Pastorious on bass.
Excellent!!!!
Mintzer
he can play
awe awesome solos. the breath of live impro
Magic stuff from two sax giants & smokin' band!
@WHsaxguy Two different players, two completely different approaches. I dig them both!
I love the Larry Young Unity shirt. I hope they have them at amazon...
When the rhythm section starts to seriously dig in and the bass starts walking behind Mintzer's solo.... UGH!!!!! Oh my gosh!!! that is groovin' so friggin' hard!!!! That kind of a groove - straight ahead intense swing - is an absolute blast to play with and Mintzer was kickin' it!!
Bob Mintzer is one of the greatest for sure.
Both guys are amazing in the fact they can each craft a solo in such a different and have both sound incredible! Also I think it was pretty interesting to hear the rhythm section during both Coffin's and Mintzer's solos. I feel like Felix went to more of a walking bass line at points with Mintzer. Such great musicianship all around! Thanks for posting!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
insane skills !!! I would love to play sax like that one day :)
Man, just gotta say MASTERS of their mediums. It takes JUST as much skill to swing like Bob does as it does to funk out like Jeff.
Kofi on the keys 🎹 🔥 shewwwww everyone here shewwwww 🔥
beautiful player, Kofi
i like the way that amp sounds on that bass
Coffin is likened to the honey badger..."He's just crazy"!!!!!!!
@1979saxman Everybody hears it differently, that's for sure. One man's Albert Ayer is another's Kenny G.
Felix Pastorius just exelent! great Bass solo uff! he,s a killer!
That means: "wow crazy, too good!" And I agree with him. We can hear so musch influence into Jeff Coffin's playing (Rollins and Lateef specially I think). And omg, I love Sipe.
I rarely say it but that bass solo towards the end was great
True dat
@SuperFlyguy62 Cool. Enjoy the gig. Wish I was going to there.
Meu Deus, que sonseirasso de primeira, Bob Mintzer é fodástico mesmo!

It feels weird to see someone other than Rashawn Ross play trumpet alongside Coffin!
CARACAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA....QUE DOIDEIRAAAAAA......BOM DE MAISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Mintzer just flippin tears it up
@007grog3 Welcome Back.
@interloperftv That would be me. I just purchased the pocket camcorder when I recorded this, and used the on-camera mic. Now, I have an external mic which is much much better.
Mystery Guitar Man!!

Bob Mintzer at 6:40 to 6:53 give a masterclass about swing
@WHsaxguy Gentlemen, no pissing contests, puleeez.
@interloperftv It is pretty cool, no doubt about that.
i love that 6:46
That bass player tho.......
felix P
@BrianMBrody Good description!
6:45-6:50 mmm that's tasty
Did Mintzer already know this tune or did he pick it up on his own? Wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter haha. Loved that change into the straight ahead feel at 6:40!
That bass solo! He's definitely a Pastorious.
I'm gonna go with he didn't require any explanation. Most of the competent players (even on a local level) I've found to be able to very quickly get to the heart of changes and that would definitely be the case with Bob Mintzer.
Plus, this is a blues too 😂
Great video, thanks for sharing! My preference is for Mintzer; more my style than Jeff Coffin.
mistrzowie ♥
How can you say that Jeff Coffin isn't an educator I have personally been in his masterclasses can say with confidence that I came away from that class a much better player than before.
He’s definitely an educator and a master at his craft!
minister just makes the other cats play better. coffin pretty good.
does anyone know if Jeff Sipe is from nola? he's got such a good feel
@6strbassplayer Haha alright, thanks mate. :)
It's not called tenor madness, it's tall and lanky
Yo what is playing during the intro?
@SuperFlyguy62 Lucky you! The Mutet is one of the great bands playing today. And Jeff is superb musician and communicator. Are you in Orlando?
707 i thought I heard MAceo.
Is there any music out there for this specific tune or would I have to write it out? Anyone with more knowledge than me on transcribing, please feel free to share changes for the song
This is Jeff Coffin's original right? Tall and lanky
@saxomaniaco08 That's good, right?
@6strbassplayer What does Apt Q-258 mean?
@jhg123456 Felix Pastorious on bass.
@fredschreffler Bob's a pretty cool cat, no doubt about that.

Mysteryguitarman?? But how?!
Hi, anyone know the name of this tune?
@SimonBak90 Not really sure. Thats what Colonel Bruce Hampton called him when he was playing in the Aquarium Rescue Unit (ARU). If you know anything about Col Bruce then you know it could mean.....anything or nothing at all.
Who is the keyboard player?
Kofi burbridge
holy *uck
Does anyone know the name of this tune?
Wow?
wow???
how do you get that effect like you're yelling on sax?
Search growling on the sax
Plus in case of Coffins solo he was mostly doing Frullato or Flutter-tonguing
Michael Murphy just hum while playing the note
I
It’s funny coming back to this comment three years laters and I can do that and more now (^: thank God for progress
What do they call this song? Would love to find sheet music somewhere
Michael Chomick tall and lanky
Michael Chomick You don't need sheet music, it's a very simple blues form in E, notes are very easy to find. Use your ears !
I think I may have died and gone to heaven at about 6:46.
Nobody is going to hate you 4 what you have to say. However, until you are on the same stage as these cats you will not see that they are both big time giants, Bless you ca4 gochops and go sit in with both of them see if you do not agree.
Jeff Sipe! I thought he was dead or in mars...
11:31
THE POWER OF TWO MASTERS OF SAXOPHONE¡¡¡¡
@jthekk2
The 17 Sharp Scale is the F# Major Scale, here it si:
F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#, E
Here it is the same scale wrote as a E## Major Scale (E## = F#)
E##, F###, G###, A##, B##, C###, D##
A B Minor scale transposed on a Bb became a C#minor Scale, that, in the same way, can be thougth as an B## minor Scale, that have not 17, but 16 sharps.
(B##, C###, D##, E##, F###, G##, A##)
In any case, you can easily add 12 sharp (1 octave) to the notes you are playing, the result will be the same scale ^^
What's the name of this tune?
Tall and lanky
That is definitely Jaco's son.
What drugs are the people who disliked on? I don't want those kind
Song name ???
Tall and lanky
Coffin's playing reminds me a lot of James Carter in style, but he doesn't take it over the top like Carter does. A lot more "modest", if you will. Good playing.
why is it black and white
Dang I didn't even notice it was B&W, haha
I know people will hate me for saying this, because I hate it when people say this type of stuff, but Jeff coffin played the same stuff over and over again in his solo. super redundant. He is a good player....but Mintzer is a modern jazz giant.
Oh my God Mintzer just bodied everyone! Lol
But its tasty stuff....
