Thanks for doing this one guys. I saw her at the Atlanta Pop festival in 1969. She followed Led Zeppelin (amazing). When their set was over all of the lights went out and out of the dark, without a band she sang the first "Summertime" notes. 250,000 people stood up, the lights went on and we stood watching her for her entire set. She was one of a kind.

BB King said that he loved to listen to Janis sing because she was the only person he'd ever heard who could sing in three octaves at once.
She was a truly respected talent.

"Summertime" was written by George Gershwin as part of "Porgy & Bess" back in 1934. According to Guinness World Records, "Summertime" holds the world record for the total number of recorded versions of a song (67,591 in 2017). The first version I remember hearing back when was Sam Cooke's hit version from 1958. I discovered many of the other versions on my own as I got older. Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and Mahalia Jackson recorded classic versions, as did The Marcels, Herbie Mann, and Big Mama Thorton. The other two versions from the sixties that stand apart along with this Janis Joplin version, are Ricky Nelson's "swamp rock" version from 1962 and Billy Stewart's 1966 version filled with blasting horns and rapid fire scat singing like you won't believe. This Janis Joplin version stands out for her singing, of course, but also for its psychedelic arrangement which varies considerably from other versions. Sublime dropped a reggae/dub/hip-hop version in 1997 called "Doin' Time". Check it out.

When Janis was in high school and college she would sing at some clubs in Port Arthur. But, then she would go over the border with friends over the border and watch real blues singers in clubs. she would eat it up and taken it all in. She learned her craft not just from a natural talent but, from observing the true blues where she could and incorporating it into her music.

I always have such mixed emotions when I listen to (especially when I see her) Janice singing. She was such an immense, raw talent but with a vulnerable and sad, almost tormented soul. She could never escape from her past and ultimately that's what led to her demise at such a young age. She was a true lost treasure.

The "Cheap Thrills" album has the original studio version of this song, as well as the highly recommended "Ball and Chain". You'll see a concert performance of Ball and Chain commonly recommended on TH-cam but it's edited down a lot. Cheap Thrills gives you the whole version.
Also on that album check one of her own compositions, "Turtle Blues". Quintessential Janis.

Albums: 1968 Cheap Thrills, 1969 I Got Dem OL’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama, 1971 Pearl, 1972 In Concert. There are some other albums produced after her death but these are the albums that were her biggest ones.

I'm sure someone down below noted this, but she released 4 albums (Big Brother and the Holding Company (1967); Cheap Thrills (first hit album); I Got Dem Ol Kozmic Blues, Mama (1969) and Pearl (1971) which was released 3 months after her death. She went through about three different bands and explored a lot of Blues, R&B (with kind of an Otis Redding style) and even country. Amazing, though too tragically short, career.

In the 1960's and the 1970's Janis was part of our rebellion. Maybe only symbolically but still.....

This is The Full Tilt Boogie Band , Janis said she never felt connected with this band , but this is the band her manager set up for her . The song you reacted to Ball And Chain , that was with Big Brother And The Holding Company , she was happy with them , but , some of them were not happy because Janis came along and basically took over the band , people showed up to see Janis , Big Brother was just there . I myself , prefer Big Brother And The Holding Company over The Full Tilt Boogie Band , or The Kozmic Blues Band , which was her second band !!

Please please please check out Who Knows Where The Time Goes by Fairport Convention. The singer is Sandy Denny and she was the only feature on a led zeppelin album. She won female vocalist of the year in 1970 along with the male vocalist Robert Plant. She is my favorite female singer by far

For a stunning version of Summertime try Sarah Vaughan . Joplin gave us a great phenomenal rock version but Vaughan’s Jazz is Breathtaking. Her voice is a fine instrument that captivates . The band is the The Holding Company ☮️

Sarah Vaughan was the version I remember from Childhood and it is still one of the versions I like best. I was born in the 1940's.
Janis Joplin's version is like a different song almost. I love both for different reasons and get entirely different feelings from each. The images in my head are far different for each. I don't compare them to each other as they are so different, but that is just me, I am sure.
Sarah's version is much like the original as I remember. There are so many great versions of the song. The list is almost endless.
Vaughan did a great version of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" too. She had a great voice. Her voice fit into her time just as Janis's fit her time. She could walk in and out of the blues and sound great no matter what.
I am glad you said "Sarah Vaughan" I had forgot about her version. That's on me for forgetting.
However my personal choice is Janis Joplin and this is most likely because she was there and preforming in the 1960's and was involved in the feelings and times many of us shared.
