  • Heya!
    So this is probably the thing I get asked most about, aside from how to move to Japan, so I wanted to address it and finally got around to getting my thoughts into video format!
    Here's NipponQ's video that I mentioned: • Speed Laundry: Being F...
    As mentioned in the video, I'm a 14 in NZ sizing, around a 12 in US, and 42/44 in EU sizing. I hope that's helpful!
    I really hope this video is helpful - I tried to be as pragmatic as possible and talk about things that would have been useful for me to know before I moved here. If you have any other questions, let me know! :)
    Thanks so much for watching, and I'll talk to you soon!

    Hi Eevee, my name is Linda-Day-Sakamoto, and I've lived in Japan for forty years now. I just listened to your You Tubes on living in Japan with a disability and being fat. Thank you for making them. I wish I would have had them to refer to when I first came to Japan. First you said the only thing you couldn't buy in Japan now are bras, but I have gone from not being able to buying anything thing in Japan when I first came to Japan to being able to up everything. I have found the catalogue company to be very helpful, it name is Nissen and they have a catalogue for larger women running from Size LL to 10 L. It has taken forty years but I can now buy both underpants and bras in Japan. The underpants go up to 10 L's and they stretch, so no worry. Then their bras go up to a size 105-110 underbust with size H-G--I cup bras, so worry no more. They have really well made, reasonable clothing. Much of which is made from 100 %cotton which is wonderful with the hot weather coming up. The clothing is mostly oriented towards young women but I'm 69 years old and if I select carefully Ican find age appropriate clothing. Like you my biggest problem has been underwear, but that problem is now solved. Now if they can get more women's shoes in Size 28 cm I would be in heaven, but just last week I was walking in Kamakura and I found some good summer shoes for both men and women in my size and the colors I want and the best thing yet is they were only 1,200¥,lucky. The telephone number for catalogue company is as follows: Nissen 0120-11-2000 which is a free dial ask them to send you the Smile Land catalogue, if the operator you get doesn't speak English very well they will try very hard to find someone who does to help you. They have always been so kind to me I can't believe it. I'm in a wheelchair so it is hard for me to get out shopping. But we large women are lucky because right now the tunic look is in and if you go to the shops specializing in ethnic clothes you can find something, and again they are almost all cotton which is best for the summer heat. A good idea is to wait until the end of the season and you can get great bargains. Also there are more and more large size Japanese. The Nissen catalogue has two Smile Land stores now one in Tokyo and one in Sendai I think it is, it is also online. Worry no more there are no more reasons not to come to Japan.

    NipponQ's video I think is the only one I've really seen about being fat in Japan up until now so thank you for this! I'm applying for JET this year and like you mentioned, I've read a lot of things which have really made me start to prepare myself mentally for a lot of comments if I'm successful. I think it's best to prepare for the worst - I'm going to hope that it ends up okay and that I'm pleasantly surprised, but I'm expecting the worst. I'm a couple sizes bigger than you are, so I expect to be out of luck when it comes to clothes in Japan, unless it's something that's supposed to be quite loose fitting. Same goes with shoes - although, I expected to have to bring lots of shoes with me as I have flat feet so most shoes are too painful for me to wear anyway. Kind of expecting to have a suitcase dedicated to shoes and bras, at this rate!
    Thank you for talking about this, there really isn't a lot of information out (not that I can find anyway, and a lot of it seems to be outdated). Same goes with your content related to spoonie life - I've found it really useful! :)

      Hey, thanks so much for this feedback, I really appreciate it, and I'm super happy that you found this helpful.
      The good news about Japanese styles, and especially work styles, is that a lot of shirts are designed to be very loose-fitting/flowy, which gives us a much better chance of fitting them!
      Definitely focus on the shoes and bras though.
      Best of luck with your JET application, I'm sure you'll do awesome. :)

    Hello! Thank for such an interesting video! I'm exactly the same size as you (but my bottoms are sometimes size 14).
    I've never ever heard any comments on my weight, so I was surprised you even had a video on this topic. Could you please tell me, where do you buy clothes, especially pants except for Uniqlo? Because I can't fit in H&M and Zara pants. I used to buy everything at Old Navy but they quit their business in Japan last fall:(

    • @AstroVee
      @AstroVee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      dothetwist298 It's great that no one's commented on your size! In my experience it really depends how you carry your weight - most comments were on my boobs or hips, which are fairly disproportionately large for my body type. So if you're more proportionate then it'll be less mentioned I think.
      I'm afraid I don't have much more to tell you! H&M and Zara were my go-to places to get casual clothes. I also used GU sometimes, but since it's a branch of Uniqlo it's probably not what you're looking for. The only other place I found pants/shorts that fit were like random little boutiques in malls or shopping areas. Sorry I can't be more helpful. :(

    • @dothetwist298
      @dothetwist298 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm often told that I look standoffish - it's just my face when I don't bother showing my emotions xD My chest is pretty wide, my height is 5'6"-5'7", so I'm not small in general. I also buy lots of stuff in Uniqlo but I just want more.... variety? Variety of models, colors, textures. I've recently become hooked on GAP, its tops, sweaters and dresses look great on a curvy figure! But bottoms are still my main problem, so I've been thinking of ordering off Old Navy's American online store. I like Uniqlo but it's just that Japanese love their polyester clothes but I prefer cotton or wool or linen. My shoe size is 25.5, so unfortunately I have trouble buying shoes as well xD
      And btw, I completely agree about the skirts. My Japanese coworkers can easily pull off more colorful outfits or short skirts because they're skinny, while I had also been told by my boss to mind what I'm wearing. I have to wear suits at work, so I gave up. I just buy whatever because everybody looks the same anyway.

    • @AstroVee
      @AstroVee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh, the height difference totally makes sense! I am pretty short, 5'2, so I think weight looks super different on me.
      Have you tried ASOS? It's online, so can be hit or miss, but I really love their plus size pants and they're a bit long on me, so might work well for you?
      The clothing double standard is so sad. Like I get it in some ways, because clothes do look different on different people, but it just made me so sad seeing my coworkers wearing really nice skirt/blouse combos that I would never be able to get away with. Here's me sitting in my classic button-up and work pants, hahah.

    --- I think the reason you don't get much nasty comment on being plus size is because of your beautiful and lovely face. Basically you are very cute. Your cute face knocks everybody down. Besides that, I am always amazed how articulate your observation and your opinions are. That makes you very special.
    --- I love watching the TV show "Karaoke Battle". Kanako Yanagihara is a personality on the show. She is a very popular plus size girl. One day there is a participant girl on the show who was also a plus size. She said to Kanako. "Oh I have been a huge fan of you." Kanako commented back to her "If we were on the dictionary we would be on the same page on encyclopedia" with smile. Oh I love her comment. Such a smart girl. th-cam.com/video/1QD1VGD3-Vs/w-d-xo.html

    I don't think its just a Japan thing, more like an Asian thing. but you're not fat, my friend is chubby and cute sized like you. and she's asian.. but there is something that most asians won't agree on the part of body positive movement when it comes to obese people because it relates to ones health.. not because of how it looks.

    • @AstroVee
      @AstroVee  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think it is an Asian thing, but I can't talk for all of Asia since I've only lived in Japan.
      People who have mentioned my weight have never mentioned it from a healthy aspect, but always from a "don't you want a husband????" sense haha. I think it's a bit of both - health and looks.

    • @linarinzlin7798
      @linarinzlin7798 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eevee Morgan hahaha.. i'm born and raised as asians in asia, being chubby like you is fine, in fact you look a lot healthier, but obese is not something we would support like the body positive movement especially in the USA, and yes, you're right, partially on the looks too.. but me personally, I never mind on the looks, but more on the health because I have an obese uncle and he really have a lot of health problems.. I won't deny, bra size for larger women, according to my friends anyway in Asia they don't really come in cute patterns..

    Don't get me wrong coz i'm not a lesbian but U R one of the most attractive people i have seen on TH-cam. The Japanese have got a far greater problem than worrying about people's weight and that is they have a seriously declining birth rate, 1 in 4 men R not married by the age of 50 and they have the oldest per capita virginity rate. Perhaps if they teach the Japanese, in particular men, that if they want to marry they should be more realistic in choosing a partner and not expect a sex goddess the japanese birth rate wouldn't be declining so much. I think a Japanese man would be crazy to pass U by so keep you head up and carry on. And enjoy your life coz as someone once told me " life is not a dress rehearsal. U only get one chance. So enjoy living it."

    You mentioned that women will grab/pinch another woman’s stomach. I’ve seen this in a lot of Japanese Anime. There is another trope I’ve seen & wanted to ask about: one female character grabbing another female’s breasts. #1. Is this a real thing? #2. How common is it? #3. Why do they do this? Finally, #4. How can I basically, in a respectful manner, tell them to “back the f*@¥k off!”. As an assault survivor, this is a psychological trigger for me, but I was an Anthropology undergrad, so I know Japan has different set of cultural norms.

On the other hand, if you don't want to or can't then that's awesome too. I'm more of a "love yourself" kind of person. Not my place to tell people how they should look or what they should do, haha.

      I don't disagree, but it's not my place to speculate on someone's health. I will leave that to them and their healthcare professionals. :)

    In my opinion the music ruins the video, even more when i'ts a serious topic. I prefer hearing only a voice

      giou Sorry! I never used to put music over my talking videos, but recently a few people have requested it, so I've been doing it. Unfortunately I can't please everyone, but I'll try to find a balance and have music on some and not on others. :)

      Eevee Morgan I know you don't think you're that great Eevee. but no one is perfect, to me, you are just right. you don't offend anyone, and you speak the truth, you are amazing. I really really like you. I don't have idols, but you are certainly an idol of mine. I wish I could meet you

      I'm sure I manage to offend SOMEONE out there, haha. But I really appreciate what you said, because I do try my best to think about my words and how they might affect people, so it is awesome to hear that that's noticed.
      As for meeting me, you never know what the future holds, right? The world is so small nowadays, we could both end up anywhere. :)

    Japan discriminates against overweight people and they don't embrace diversity - why is this OK, but not OK anywhere else?
