Shelties were bred to be "reserved" towards strangers. This reservation is due to the fact that they were left by themselves on a small island, in the Shetlands, with a herd of sheep. Because they were/are such good herders they were often stolen. So they were bred to not go to anybody they don't know.

I've had two Pomeranians and both of them were drama queens. One even acted like I was murdering him with a pinking shears when we were at group doggie training because we were practicing the sit command and the trainer reassured me that no, he wasn't being hurt because I tapped the base of his spine lightly. Rather, the I'm Being Murdered scream is the song of the Pom's people. Yet, my cousin's pom (raised with huskies) would yodel and scold but saved his screaming for things like not being fed by 5 pm.

I understand you don't need or want to stress your pet further, 🙏🏼" however 🥺 i rather the quik become shorter over time than to have to constantly growing the nails out than trim at the groomers twice or three times a month. I'd dogs with longer nail issues and it's better and beneficial to get the quik trim and finished than to constantly wait 🫸🏼💬 it out

My dad had a mini Sheltie when my daughter was little. She kept showing up at his social services agency one January (in Minnesota) as a tiny puppy. Their office was attached to a junior high school. Their mail carrier knew of a house nearby that was probably a backyard breeder. Dad or one of his social workers brought her back three times and she kept returning in the freezing cold.
They’d just lost their old Westie and my stepmother was only willing to keep her a few days. She crossed the bridge 14 years later. One of her quirks was that she worked desperately hard to herd my daughter and my nephew who were preschoolers when they were at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. She just couldn’t figure out why they wouldn’t herd. They further confused her when they’d get in her crate. She finally satisfied her need by herding the kitchen island. It always stayed right where she’d “put” it. She was funny and very sweet.

I grew up with Shelties, my parents have had 4 of them. I have been considering getting a Pomsky, but this little cutie pie is making me re-think my choice-Sheltie-Pom?! Love this!
I’ve never heard Shelties specifically getting a bad rep. They are herding dogs and need LOTS of exercise. My parents’ dogs have always been sweet and will give warning snaps but have never actually intended to bite anyone. They are very easily trained and, like so many other dogs, if their owner properly socializes them, exposing them to children and strangers, practices grooming steps at home like brushing, bath, and nails… they are some of the best dogs any family could ask for. It also helps when the stranger builds a bond with them like Vanessa did with Teddie.
This channel continues to be my happy place.

I had a Sheltie/Border Collie cross as a teenager. She had been thrown out of the back of a moving car, was seriously injured, and rescued by an older couple. She was simply too much dog for them, so we ended up with her. She was quite vicious if anyone came into our yard (we had signs up).
I groomed her myself and she was fantastic for all of it.

No, they don't need tons of excersize. I've owned 11 over 27 years. A good walk, playing fetch for 20 minutes or so, a run with a littermate around the fenced in yard, or a good Frisbee throw can help tire them out. My 3 daughters have grown up with Shelties and the dogs have never bit, bared teeth, nipped or growled.

(It also may do nothing, but with dogs that tend to get anxious, it is always worth a try, since it won't hurt them). @@ShellyCline He didn't "miss her" or "bond" to her, it's really weird how much humans project what they want to see onto animals. Life sadly isn't a disney fairytale. More likely is that he saw an opportunity when she left to try and get away before she got back, and put everything he had into it. Which is also why he stopped when she returned. Very much the opposite of bonding or missing her, which requires... just so many leaps in logic of animal behaviour and Teddy's specific behaviour. Vanessa does great, but no, many of these animals want nothing to do with her or any groomers, and that clearly includes Teddy lol

My pom was like this at the groomers, but just the groomers and nowhere else, and with no one else. He was normally a chronic barker too, but the moment he set foot on the property of the groomers, he just put on the brakes and started shaking. The funny part was the groomers' shop was located on our usual walk, so he was fine walking pass it. But the moment I'd turn towards the driveway of the place, he'd freeze in place and I had to pick him up to get him to go in. Meanwhile, going to the vet his tail was wagging and he was just fine.

OMG I cannot handle Teddy's cuteness. Pom and Sheltie - what an adorable combo! I had a Sheltie/Beagle mix when I was a kid, she was around for almost 12 years and yes, she was anxious 24/7 and barked at anything and everything - including leaves, and the lightning. She was ridiculous 😂 I miss that dog though.

I had a sheltie-poodle cross, and her anxiety was next level. I did all her grooming though. I did take a "learn to groom your dog" course, so I learned how to trim her paws, and tidy up the hair on her tail, ears, and legs. She had poodle fluff sticking out on her legs. She didn't love going to the class with me, but I was right there, so she survived. She was really used to me grooming her, so no problems there.

You have the dog Whisper skill. Little dogs are normally nervous because their hearts are very small so it takes a lot of blood pumping through their bodies for them to react which causes them to be nervous all the time.

1:02 - “you peed!” This was our shih tzu when I was in high school, every single time one specific friend of mine came over. The dog would be SO! EXCITED! TO! SEE! N! that as soon as N came inside, the dog would pee a little. We tried taking the dog out before N arrived. We tried leaving the dog out via the back door while N came in the front. It didn’t matter. N was the ONLY person she did this with, so eventually we just went to the door prepared with paper towels.

Teddy is adorable. His hooman must adore having him in their life. I wonder if decreasing the Collie size to Sheltey size is the reason for their anxiety levels being so high.

Would be nice to have you groom my dogs if I ever own any in the near future, but don’t know if that would be possible because I don’t think I live near where you are. Pretty sure I’m several states away…could be troublesome to travel several states just so you could groom a dog…

I took in a 10 year old Sheltie last year, she is the most chill dog I've ever seen. Other than barking at any small motor noise, vacuum, blender, hair dryer, etc, nothing seems to make her anxious. She will be a bit stand offish with new people at first, but usually settles in with them fairly easily. I think my groomer has no trouble with her either, she never says there is a problem. 😊
