    I like it. I like the idea of welding a pipe between the two tongs for spacing and to hold them straight which might allow hooking the log from the tractor seat. I like a guy who isnt going to do it this way just because that's the way I've always done it. This country was built by men looking for a better way to do things.

      You could even attach the log tongs to a pipe using U-bolts to test out the idea.

    Nice work. Those log tongs will definitely save you saw maintenance with the bar and chain.👍 I use Husqvarna logs tongs to carry manageable size rounds and chunks, which is helpful on the back.

      I think so too Al! That's great, anything you can do to save the back is important!

    Have a twig or a short wood or plastic wedge with you. Insert it into the kerf when cutting between the tongs. It will prevent the bar from being pinched as you cut through. When I cut I have just a small 1x.5x3long piece of pine cut with a 30 degree that I push in the kerf by hand. I keep it in the pocket of my chaps.

      Thanks for watching, I no longer cut like this. Not efficient, spend too much time messing with everything!

    Great time in the Woodyard last weekend. Hope to have you over for a project in my wood yard....so many great ideas shared on the channel, I never thought those tongs would have so much interest!!! Please note, I am a keep it simple stupid kind of guy. I use the tongs on 20-30” logs and muscle then around with tongs on bucket which is a very important part of using them. You can curl the bucket and better leverage them around. It works for me, I must have cut 300 cords with them......hope to have you over soon.
    Best,
    Guerry

      A good time by all! People seem to like the tongs and I definitely do! Although it might take a little getting them hooked up it’s less time sharpening saws so I think it’ll work well for me! Looking forward to another meet up in your neck of the woods!

    Nice Jake that worked great! I’m going to have to try it out

      Yeah works pretty well, might not be faster but what I loose in speed futzing with the tongs I gain in less time sharpening!

    Hello Jake, if I may make another suggestion I think marking your cuts with the saw prior to picking up the log so you know where to place the tongs and welding the 2 tongs together with a pipe will simplify the picking up part and I think you will have “ GREAT SUCCESS “as Borat would say.
    Another great video Bud.

      I think a Mingo marker would be better for that you could run around the yard and mark them all before you even get the saw out

    Can you pick up the logs with the grapple from the butt end then cut the log. Or just pick up the log with your forks. Seems like a lot fussing around when at any point the log tong could swing or drop the log. But in the end what works works and it’s your effort time money and preference lol. Good luck it’s fun watching you try to make a smoother wheel. I’m so guilty of being ok with just pushing my own wobbly wheel as fast as I can. If you know what I mean. Nice job on the video

    • @jasone9

      You will never pick up those size logs completely off the ground with a grapple on that size tractor

    • @DudeRanchDIY
      @DudeRanchDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I used the forks the other day and they worked well. I just enjoy trying different things to see what works best! Thanks for watching!

      All of those logs were loaded into my trailer using that tractor and grapple, it picks them all up fine!

    Jake: A very good first attempt. I would suggest if you still have any of the metal cable & a pipe to run it through. You can make the two Tongs more stable an in alignment. As my grandfather always said, just keep tinkering with it. You appear to be a fast learner, catch you on #84!

    Back in the ‘60’s an old guy told me one of the ways he got old was by not working under hundreds of pounds of steel being held up by hydraulic cylinders which fail everyday in this world. I’m old now too, so it must have been good advice.

    Good ideas looks like working good, could help a little faster when marking the first part of log with marker at the tip just cut first section off then can finish marking and cut from other end instead of bouncing around, I was thinking shortening cables too till you said keeping grapple above your head, it will save you some headaches lol

    • @jasone9
      @jasone9 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Problem is he has to pull the measurement stick off to cut the whole way through, so he'd have to mark, pull it off cut through, put it back on finish marking log

    • @DudeRanchDIY
      @DudeRanchDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah thats a good idea it was a lot of back and forth!

  • @A-GUY-AND-HIS-TRACTOR
    @A-GUY-AND-HIS-TRACTOR 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about hooking up the log tongs directly to the grapple. Seems like the cable is way too long and might make it easier if it’s a shorter cable so your grapple doesn’t have to be at its full height.

    • @DudeRanchDIY
      @DudeRanchDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is definitely an option however with a shorter cable the grapple would be much lower and kind of get in the way of actually cutting the log!

    I like that deal. How much are the tongs going for? I can see hanging them from my grappler.

      I’m not sure how much tongs go for, I’ve had these for a long time!

    cut one off one end, two off the other, then back to finish all cuts in row. you will save time & steps across the front of the log.

    Never work under a loader bucket. What would you do if the hydrolics failed.

    • @DudeRanchDIY
      @DudeRanchDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I work 82’ up in the air in a bucket truck on a daily basis removing trees which is solely dependent on hydraulics to function, what would I do if those failed?

  • @portersadventures
    @portersadventures 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    lot of extra work - place a small log on ground - take grapple and set log you are cutting on top of it like you are making a cross - take grapple and push down on the short end - thus pushing the long part of log in air - buck log picture a C saw type set up - just push down on one side and raise the other

    Replace the pivot bolts with threaded rod, tongs won't pivot independently, may grab log from driver's seat

    How bout cut the log on the ground halfway, roll log, and complete the cut. You are a gadget guy for sure. Looks like a total waste of time. Try the KISS method.

    • @DudeRanchDIY
      @DudeRanchDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep it was a waste of time, I cut logs just like you said but don’t know until you try and it’s new and different content. 🤷🏼‍♂️
