You need a pair of end cutting pliers and a pair of side cutters. Make pulling those nails without so much chisel work. Great video.

Phew, you were so fortunate to get away without destroying such a beautiful bowl. I've learnt so much from you over my years as a turner. I even direct new turners to our club to tune in and watch back episodes, to learn essential techniques. Thanks Kent

Great bowl 😊. I allways like watching your videos, every time I learn something new. I would add another speces of wood that is great for live edge turning and that is european ash, also bark is well atached to wood. As for metals in the wood I tend to keep them in the bowl if they are in right spot. For spots with metal I use carbide, for everything else traditional gauges. Lots of wood in my country has remnats of war, so bullets and shrapnel are allmost common thing to find when woodturning.

Good stuff! I feel like a pair of vise grip pliers would have made light work of those nails. It's amazing you didn't really get any kickback when you hit them. Have me an idea for wooden nails to hang things in trees... 🤔

When I turn a blank of this size, I will take a forstner bit and drill a hole about 1/2”-3/4” into the wood for my spur bit. Then pound the spur bit in with a wooden mallet. This will help keep the wood on the lathe in the event it decides to fly off somewhere. This has saved my bacon on 2 or 3 occasions where I could have been injured.
To remove nail like you encountered, grip the top of the nail with pliers, then scoot your pry bar underneath the pliers and pry the nail out then.

What should I say you asked about nails. I cut a 40cm slice of an elm, which came from neighbours garden with the chain saw into blanks. First I ripped off some teeth of the chain, than I had to dig out a 4 inch nail. After I had two out I thought I am fine now until I chopped some smaller pieces close to the bark... There I finally used a metal saw to get through the nails. I leaned to play with the almost black spots which develop around the nails. The end the result looks really good.

I use channel locks to remove nails. Grab the exposed portion and use the curved edge of the jaws to roll the nail out of the hole. Vise grips work too.

It is a beautiful live edge bowl. I think they probably put the no trespassing signs up over the years, lol. Great demonstration of staying the course. Yes I have run into nails and bullets (we live in the country) where they tack the target to a tree. Thanks for sharing Kent.

    Great looking bowl, Kent.
I have a question. I've noticed that you check the wall thickness tactilely. Why not use a caliper? Digital calipers can be found for $30 or less.
The question is not why someone put nails in the tree, the question is why they didn't remove them after they had served their purpose. This is not just a problem for wood turners. The nails are a huge problem for the persons who cut the tree down and then buck it. Nails can do huge damage to a chainsaw, including causing the chain to break. At the speed the chain is turning serious injury can occur. Another is if the tree goes to a mill to be processed. Circular saws aren't hurt too much, but a nail can cause a carbide tip to be knocked off. However, a nail can cause the blade of a bandsaw to break. With the number of home/portable saws out there, nails can cause a lot of lost revenue to the mill operator as they have to fix/replace their equipment. Perhaps a small metal detector would be helpful.

I had access to a neighbor's downed Hickory tree that was approx 18" - 24" in diameter. I've turned a dozen bowls from that tree and three of them are live edge. Yes, I agree the bark stays on the blank very well. I like turning the Hickory but I find the character is a bit lacking in the timber.

Thanks for the tip on using danish oil for the fragile bowls. For anybody else like me who only has the linseed/beeswax mixture, I make it work on live edge bowls without gunking by making use of compressed air (light touch on the air nozzle trigger). It clears all the excess from the crevices so I can wipe it away with a cloth.

Beautiful bowl! I have once discovered a fence staple and a bullet in a blank. The fence staple was predictable because the tree was growing along an old fence line but the bullet was a surprise. Probably ended up in the tree by a deer hunter. Both were not easy to extract.

At 15:25, the sheer scrape is against supported grain regardless of direction of tool movement. The angle between wood direction and cutting edge is essentially the same either way.
I hit my first nail this week, moments after sharpening, of course. It was too deep for my metal detector to find it when I milled the logs. It was a yard tree, and years ago, it held a tree house and a swing. Yard trees are always a gamble for the sawmill and the lathe.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for writing and sharing! Yes, shear-scraping is the only technique that can go against the supported grain without issues. The shave is so light it doesn't pull out end grain fibers. Happy Turning!

I've met up with nails a time or two and found myself regretting all the tree forts and other structures I built as a kid using - you guessed it - nails. Hit a completely buried one once whilst chopping out a mortise late in a build project. Watcha gonna do?

Kent, that is a fine-looking bowl. Enjoyed the nail lesson. I would like to be able to get some of the various woods I have seen you turn ... after all, if it is local wood to you, it is local to me, too.

Great job I was going to say someone was building a tree house. But they were to deep or the tree was way to young. I have never pulled a nail out of a bowl. But I hate to admit it I pounded many a nail into a tree when I was a kid. I guess my day is coming.

When I run across a nail, I chisel around the nail to expose the head and use a pari of Pliers or vice grips by claming down and using the jaw of the plier as a lever. Ususlly puls right out.

Such a beautiful bowl! I've learned so much since I've started watching your videos. I do have a question on the shoulder/foot though. Is there any rule of thumb on what the size of the shoulder/foot should be in relationship to the bowl/platter you turn (similar to the turning speed/size of the bowl)?

Around the 24 min mark you are doing what I call a reverse cut. I do the same thing to cut away the pillar I leave in the middle of my bowls for support purposes. What I find interesting is everytime I make that cut, the surface I leave is like a mirror. Its perfect. I would argue it would even need sanding. BUT I can never get that same insane smoothness when I make my bowl wall cuts. Any idea what makes that backwards cut so dang smooth and shiny?
