- WHY DO GOLF PROS TEE UP THEIR BALLS DIFFERENTLY WHEN USING IRONS? WHEN I WAS CADDYING ON THE EUROPEAN TOUR WITH GOLF TOUR PLAYER DANIEL GAVINS I NOTICED THAT LOTS OF GOLF PROS TEED THEIR BALLS UP HIGHER THAN AMATEUR GOLFERS. WHY DO THEY DO THIS? WHAT DOES IT MEAN? I EXPERIMENT WITH TEEING UP MY BALL USING IRONS TO SEE IF THERE IS A SECRET TO THEIR TEE HEIGHT!

TEE HIGH, LOW OR NONE ? ⬇️⬇️
High
Low until now. I'll give it a go.
I have always teed up my irons high...and if I am hitting a fairway wood, I tee the ball up high. It was how I was taught when I was in college by the PGA Pro who taught the Golf Class.
Always go low or no tee. I hit my irons and woods better of the deck.
@Brian Smith 😂😂
Played once with a pro in Spain, he asked me why I didn’t tee up for iron shots on par 3’s. “More backspin” I told him. “Wrong” he said, “You’ll get more backspin off a tee plus you’re playing from a perfect lie”. He teed it higher just as you said and went on to shoot 6 under par....
Brother Liam....i wont be able to take a full swing for 2 more months ....keep sending this videos to keep my game up....thanks ....from a fellow GolfMate from across the big pond from a fellow GolfMate.....👍👍👍
On short par 4's, I tee it 1/2 inch high and use my driving iron. This strategy has increased my fairways hit 75% from 45% when I was using my driver. My GIR has increased to 40%. A short par 4 to me is any distance under 350-yards. Try it & I'm sure it will help you.
Cheers Jim 👍
Joe is doing a fantastic job with the videos. Good work both of you!
He is
Enjoy watching you play golf. My back went out two days ago. Watching your videos get me through till I'm healed. Week or two, keep putting more videos Liem.👍🌵
I used to tee my irons the same as you but tried this on my last 2 rounds. Has made a huge difference on the par 3s. Im seeing a better strike and less curvature. Great video Liam, glad i watched this.
Been playing 40yrs and always teed it very low. This is a great tip. It makes you shallow the club. You avoid the dreaded fat shot on par 3’s. Just experimented with this yesterday on the range with great results.
I don’t about number 1 caddy, but definitely worlds best presenter/commentator. Love your work mate.
Appreciate that
Most pros I’ve heard talking about tee height, try to recreate a perfect lie in a fairway, so just sitting on top of the grass. I believe DJ doesn’t use a tee on par 3s. If you tee too high, you end up striking it too high in the face and missing the sweet spot. Most manufactures have weight in the bottom of the club and not high in the face therefore a high strike comes up short.
that's for the better players, for the higher hc players where they can't control strike, higher will be better, especially if you hit more thin than fat shots.
@@jedimike118 if you hit thin then change your hitting. You can't tee up on the fairway, then what?
A high strike tends to spin less, so in theory should go further.......???
@@jedimike118 only time I thin a ball is off a tee. I dont bother with a tee now.
@@gertvanderhorst2890 Easier said than done, if it was easy we all be on tour.in my 20 years of playing I've never teed a ball up in the fairway,a thin shot is my miss, always have been but i hit it straight and keep in play.
As a 19 handicap I tee my irons up on a blue castle tee for 4 - 7 irons and the red castle tee for 8 - sw. Cheers for another great video Liam
I have tried this for 3 rounds. I am sold on the idea of the higher tee. Better ball striking. Straighter shots. Works well using a fairway wood or an iron. I don't take divots. Didn't before anyway.
Hi Liam, good video. I am a mid handicapper (12) and have always preferred slightly higher tees for my lower irons (4 - 7). For my other irons and wedges I use a lower tee. I have always felt I get a better strike with the lower irons using a higher tee. Looking forward to seeing the tenerife videos to help us through the (adsurd) no golf lockdown!
Good advice pal
I always tee up with an iron and I was taught to have it higher, I don’t normally take a divot so I found having the ball to low I always hit it thin and always a bad strike, something I was taught at an early age and very early on in my golfing life, great video and keep up the great work
Thank you sir 🙏
I have always used red castle tees in the winter or orange ones pushed in gently in the summer, always helped me ensure a clean hit off the tee and make sure you get a good follow through and spin. I know a lot of players who just hit off the grass and swear and curse when they catch the ground in the tee box
Cheers pal
Thanks for the tips Liam. You are the best
Same to you sir
I started using a red castle tee peg off tee a few weeks ago as before I used a green, hitting ball much sweeter now.
Liam, try teeing it up like you did in the video AND move the ball back in your stance a couple of ball widths. You may be surprised, this will allow you to hit down on the ball closer to the center of the face.
Takes the chances of a chunk out of it really help with contact. Amazing what you see when your actually there as opposed to on the TV.
Tried the high t for irons today and did so much better off the t-box with irons than when I did the low t height like I used to do!! Thanks for the tip!!
Yes always tee it up on the par threes or hitting irons off the tee. Just something I was taught from the beginning. Winter setting in here in Canada 🇨🇦 prepping for the snow ❄ Have a great day 👍🇨🇦
Was always told to tee it up...but almost never do (even bump the tee ground sometimes with no tee)...I will give this a self test tomorrow's round...Thanks pal, Cheers from the US
Stay safe mitch 🇺🇸
I have always teed it low. I will now tee it higher and see if I hit the center of the face more. Thank you, as I can use help for my iron play.
Started teeing high about a few months ago, played off the lowest plastic tees you can buy and every now and again I’d hit that worn burner or blast a wedge 50 yards further then I wanted over the green, played with a mate who’s lower handicap to me and he mentioned tee slightly higher and I noticed wedges go slightly higher and stop better even in harder greens and the irons feel so much better for feel into the greens
Makes sense
I'm a beginner but have been taught to tee my irons up like that and it works for me.
Hello great video I have just subscribed 😀 please could you tell me which rangefinder do you use?
I use white for driver, blue for 3wood & red for 5wood/irons, all castle tees. Never bought any there’s enough finds to keep me well supplied!
Have had to use a plastic mat recently to protect the course, same result a clean contact for me. Hitting behind the ball is my biggest weakness.
I will give it a try Liam. Iv always tee it up low for irons but will give high tee a wee chance see if it helps any.
I'm gonna try this... may stop the fat shot... and I think it will definitely help decrease the thin shots... Nice chip shots...
Let's us know 🙏👍
Liam when I started playing golf in 96 I bought golf video and the pro on the video said whenever you have the opportunity always use a T peg and he put the T peg at a Height above ground not down as low as you did
I've always teed up low with irons, but I'll have to give this a try tomorrow. BTW, I tried your other tip about picking a club based on the back of green distance, and it worked pretty well. A few times I did end up well past the hole, but I think it did help more than it hurt.
I have always done it and it does help hitting the sweet spot of the iron
I don’t tee my irons because I’ve been trying to get a consistent swing that is the same from the fairway as the tee box. However, it is so much easier to hit the ball clean off the tee.
Good tip which I will try. I was like you and teed it too low and the game is difficult enough.
The next time I play golf which because of lockdown won’t be until December will try it. All the best as always.
My pro has always told me to tee it up using your fingers under the ball. When your fingers are on the ground you have the perfect height. The explanation of Daniel does make a lot of sense!
I tee up low but will try this see how it goes it makes sense luv these tio videos laim keep them coming give us something to work on at the range over the winter
Hi Liam I all way tee up high with a 4 or 5 iron I often use a blue castle tee 6 or 7 iron use a red castle tee. Was told to do it by a pro years ago works for me
I find loads castle tees 🏰😂
@@GolfMates Then,how,come.you're.always.scrounging.for.'em.in.golfvids?
OK you say not scientific but I think a very valid test and one I'll definitely be trying. What Dan explained makes perfect sense, they are trying to hit from the sweet spot which most of us don't even think about except for the putter. Great video....
Liam It is better to raise the Tee as you are then Striking the ball out of the sweet spot of the Iron or Driver!!! Been watching your Golf mates For ages now and love Them!!! I play off 5 and Have always thought you do strike the ball well and you have a great short game...... BUT you regularly Come over THE TOP!! Hence your divots Point LEFT! and That's Why you Fade the ball so Much. Swing In To Out and try and stop coming over the top and you will get Better results. Keep up the fun and Video's Guys There Great! Nik Bird. West Sussex. Stay safe All.
Love the canadian leaf mention
i push it to the floor if its an 8 iron or lower - if 7 or more i raise the tee. Nice to see theirs a reason for me doing it lol - divot mark off to the left is simply trying to hit the back of the ball as once youve done that bodies rotating hence the left divot for a RH player
Such a simple tip and yes, I’m sure I tee it too low because that’s what I thought I was meant to be doing 🤷😂
I tend to go higher the tee the lower the loft . Works for me 👍 good video
Jack said he learned early in golf that "air had less resistance than dirt". Best golf lesson I ever had was from an old Pro who made me tee the ball up with a 3 wood, hover the club and hit the ball without touching the tee. It forced me not to be steep and promoted a low level sweep through the hitting area. The ball flight was lower and on a links course it ran forever.
I must admit I do the same as you I'll give this a go as soon as lock down is over keep it up Liam great stuff
Nice effort Liam. High for the driver but low for the irons. Li have tried it with irons but I hit it to high on the face - losing distance. But iam not even close to being a tour player. Good question.
Always use a red castle tee on the par 3s this time of year and a green one in the better weather though might try it a bit higher next time out
Try it pal 👍
Will definitely try it
Used to use my fingers to set tee height now use red castle tee for irons utility irons and fairway irons. Tried blue castle tees found lost distance with irons so just stick with reds, tried green c/t tended to thin irons
I have always tee the ball up high with the iron, I agree with what Daniel said it allows a more consistent strike.
For irons it's always been low, never given it another thought, till now. Will give it a go at the weekend. Cheers Liam.
I had a coach a couple of years ago and she told me to use my fingers to plant the tee for an iron as you did in this video.
Liam , the reason they tee the ball higher is that they hit the ball on the upswing like a driver to eliminate spin and minimise direction problems.
Hi Liam about a week ago I used a similar tee height at Trafford driving range and the results were really good better strike, height and carry.
A lot also depends on how windy it is. I tend to tee it lower in high winds and higher when it's calm. Just playing conditions
I was always told to not use a tee on a par 3 because you need back spin .. helps stop the ball ?
I was was told to hit the ball on the 5th groove up the club which is where the vertical sweetspo is in the club face, so that make sense the Pros do that.
I always used to tee it down to low, now I tee it up high like the pro's I find the middle way more often 👍great video Liam.
Hope well pal
@@GolfMates you to Liam
just found Liam. Very fun and entertaining to watch. Thanks for the video
10:30 mark about the divots. When going left like you mentioned it's mainly due to over the top. One of two things usually happens due to this: 1) a fade or big slice. 2) A dead pull left. Happens to me all the time. lol
Dunno but I like the way you make a divot after striking the ball. I struggle to do that hence I'm better at woods/hybrids rather than irons. Thoughts?
Iv been using the blue castle tee for my 2iron off the tee and its made a fair diffrence to using the red one. I use the red with other irons on par 3s tho
I used to Tee up higher in the Winter and Wet weather, and played some great shots. A Pro probably swings across the ball to get a nice controlled Fade
Makes life easier off the Tee, but can effect confidence when you have to hit off a tight lie on a fairway. Still worth it in Winter and soggy days
That's the measurements using the fingers always do. They tee it up high to get 5 to 7 groove center off ball ==sweet spot
Spot on!
I always tee most iron tee shot with a blue castle tee. And i often suck...one of the guys I play with tees up his short irons say a white castle tee high for really short holes. So if we're play a 100 yard par 3 he tees it up about an inch and moves it slightly forward so he gets more height on his golf ball. His old man gave him this tip. He used to play off 3 in his pomp. Thanks for the interesting content. Viva Golfmates!
Hi Liam, I’ve been teeing up higher the last couple of weeks, some of my golfmates have commented on it, with my irons and my 3 wood off the tee. I agree with what Daniel Son said... I have the feeling I’m hitting the sweet spot on the club more often than not, and definitely more than when I was teeing it up lower like everyone else. I think golf is a personal feeling thing, so what works for one person, doesn’t necessarily work for someone else. Keep the vids coming man, love ´em 👍🏻👍🏻
Absolutely
Great video, ikm like most putting the tees in the ground mostly. Probably with the higher tee and still creating a divot you get a better compression on the ball, hitting it further but that’s just my theory. I’ll giving this a try next time i hit the course.
i usually tee up highish but i also loosen the tee in the ground to help with less resistence
Thanks Chops 👍
Red castle tee... 👍 can’t beat our Liam showing us stuff sometimes. What a barn pot! 🤣😂
I was really interested to see this vid because I started teeing it higher for iron shots a couple of months ago, using a blue castle tee, because I’d run out of my normal tees. It sounds far fetched but it has revolutionised my game, stuck 15-20 yards on my tee shots because I hit the sweet spot much more often now, a mishit is very rare, so I have the confidence to swing a little faster which also helps.
I was worried it would affect my shots from the fairway, make me thin them, but it hasn’t at all. I used to tee it barely above the ground, but never again. For the first time in my life I am really confident of sticking an iron tee shot a long way down the middle, so I don’t even have to play a wood on tight holes any more. Even the sound of the shot is amazing compared to what I used to get. I really recommend giving this a serious try.
Typical we have lockdown again when I’m playing the golf of my life. Thanks for the vid!
I'll try it this morning on the practice area before I tee off at 9:00 this morning here in NZ, which is in 3 and ahalf hours. Cheers Liam.
Let us know how you go on pal
@golfmates Red castle tee for irons, blue castle for 3 wood.
Set heights 👍🏼
A great man said one day. When playing golf he said you should always tee the ball up when you can. His name was The Great Arnold Palmer. So can it be wrong?👍👍⛳️🏌️🇨🇦
I never knew. Great tip
Jack Nicholas said that!
🐊🏌️♂️🚩🇺🇸👍
@@Gatorgolfusa Yup, he asked why wouldn't you want a perfect lie if it's available.
@@Gatorgolfusa I always thought it was Jack Nicklaus too. Still a great tip though.....
I actually once heard Lee Trevino at a clinic answer the question "Do you hit off a tee or the ground on a par 3?" Lee answered, "I'm always going to put it on a peg, why wouldn't you take a perfect lie when you can?"
I tee it like that. It helps me not hit thin shots and more center faced ones. Which will help you hit more greens on Par 3s.
An interesting and fun video Liam 😊 I tee up low like you but I’ll give this a try 👍
Same 👍
Do you still hit down on the ball as you would with a ball on the ground? How can you get compression from a tee?
Tee up depending how you want to strike the ball! Heights going to effect distance, where the club hits the ball and spin rate.
Loved this vid. Gonna try it at the range tomorrow. Awesome, insightful comments from the Mates. Question Liam... Why are you always looking for or borrowing a tee?
Since I started playing in June I’ve always had my tees high, playing partners have said to se shorter but I’ve been using either pink, white or yellow tees, for pretty much the reason Dan said, so I can under the ball easier.
I was taught to tee it up that way from the start - 2 reasons - consistent tee height every time - grove count - the ball flies best of irons when hit from the 3rd groove up to the 5th grove up while hitting down and thru
Hi Liam. I found that on par 3s I use a blue castle tee for my irons as i get better contact with the ball and with the small red tees i seem to slice across the ball more
I will have to give it a go once out of lockdown! I know iv always tee it low so it can't be any worse....... 😂. Great videos golf mates 👏👏👏
Liam, you asked about your divots aiming to the left and why. Your club is technically supposed to be square at impact, and your swing goes from your back swing on an ark to the ball, and from impact starts to the left. If you are going over the top your divot will be narrow and sharp left. Try placing your ball with the titleist insignia facing back and turned in a little toward your right foot. When you start your downswing keep your head back just a little and watch your club go by it. Hit the ball square on the insignia and follow through. I have noticed that most of your full shots look like you are hitting a punch shot. There is no follow through, or if there is, it is a lift and deliberate follow through look when it is a nice shot. Not judging, just tips that have helped me. I always used to stop my follow through until a coach that I did not know was there pointed it out to me. A little helpful hint from Canada. Keep the videos coming.
gonna give it a go this weekend
The ball doesn't feel right when I use a tee on iron shots, I lose the bottom of the swing. Should you be taking a divot when its up that high? Keep up the good work. Thanks for the videos!!
Hi golf mates i always use the red castle tees 's on the par three's .
Hi Liam. Well I tried teeing it up as you suggested. I intended to do it on all par 3's, but forgot to do it on the first one, which I bogged. The other three that I did tee up I got par on all of them, and had good birdie putts on all of them too. Funny thing is, you tube pro's advice made me tee it up lower! I'll definitely be teeing higher in future, thanks mate. 👍
TEE HIGH, LOW OR NONE ? ⬇️⬇️
@@chungweiwang7199 Tee'd up about 6-8mm from ground. I get a HUGE amount of height, with very little if no roll. Par 3's have improved as long as its not too windy otherwise...
I have been teeing up high if I want the ball to release and roll more and If I want more spin and the ball to park it immediately or spin back then I tee it low. It seems to be working since I have been hitting more greens this past year. If the green has a false front or the pin is in the back I tee it high. I stumbled upon this one day when all I had was long tees and the ground was so hard at this certain course that I couldn't get the tee to push the ground further; and I didn't want to break the tees so I could use them on my driver shots.
I actually never used a tee on the par 3s always wanted to hit down on the irons but after seeing this I might change that when we get back out 👍
Great video liam played some good shots
My best mate uses blue tees on all iron shots when teeing off me I prefer the little red ones but I've just Invested in some new irons so I'm having to try new ways to get the right ballance
Your chip was played with positive approach👍
Thanks
I tee it up higher than you do Liam as I was told by Alisdair Campbell that to get the perfect centre strike you need to tee higher. Always teed it lower like yourself till he said that to me a few years back.
Been using the green castle tee i seem to get on ok 👌
I've always used red castle tees. Works well.
best golf video on youtube
All the years I golfed , I was never told that it was legal to tee up the ball on anything other than teeing off. Never knew it was acceptable or legal to tee fairway shots ...!
Yes it is!
What if it eliminates the toe of the club face to not be turned slightly by contacting the ground the same time contact with the ball , allowing for a much straighter hit on the ball . By teeing it up 👡 high , optically , you swing through the ball before contact with the ground can microscopicly turn the club face, effectively causing straighter shots .
Entertaining and informative!
The left digits are when they are trying to fade it, softer landing for approach shots.
As a visually impaired golfer, I always use my fingers to set a tee. Second Knuckle on my middle finger for the driver. First knuckle on my index finger for fairways and hybrids. Irons about half the height of the fairways depending on the height of the grass. Following Mr. Barlow's lead, I use 2 Bright yellow wedge tees tied together with doubled 80 lb. braid fishing line. Setting one tee all the way in and setting the other to hitting hieght makes sure the tees stay put. ( I find the any lighter fishing line is not strong enough.) I also find wedge tees are much more tolerant of not being set exactlystraight in the ground.
I use to tee it up low when I was a junior but with the new club technology advances tee it high and let it fly
