The Tigers were 19-31 in their last 50 games, loosing their last 5 games of the season to lose the division to the twins. The cardinals did not have a good season by any means but there were not a bad team. Game 4 was immediately after a rainout day, hence the wet turf in the outfield.
When the game was rained out originally, they made all the game 5 tickets be for the game 4 shown & the original game 4 tickets became game 5 tickets; that’s how I got to see the clinching game the following night.
My roommate & I at the time got to buy tickets at face value from the Cardinals b/c we had tried & failed to get playoff tickets for both previous rounds through their online site.
Since there were no refunds if you bought tickets for after the series was over, we decided to buy for game 4 to potentially see a sweep, but got to see the 4-1 series victory instead.

06 Cardinals had the worst regular season record of any playoff team ever. Everyone except Pujols got hurt at some point that season. The last week of the season they finally got the offense healthy and were able to squeak out the wins needed to hold off the Astros in the central. The one major injury they still had was Isringhausen, which is why Wainwright became the closer for all of Sept. & had an all time post season run.
The other major lingering injury was with Rolen, who La Russa benched in game 2 of the NLCS & caused a rift between them that was never resolved, & after a failed 2007 led to Rolen leaving for Cincinnati.
The Cardinals would go into a slight rebuild & also traded Edmonds after the 07 season, & part of the package back from San Diego was a young St. Louis native named David Freese.

Canadian born in 94, there were a few years where the Jay's might have slipped in if it werent for them being in the al east growing up. Was done college by the time I saw my first blue Jay's playoff game.

have you noticed that loads of these world series teams include players that are very suspect in their fielding ability? be it that their bat is too important and they justify a hole in defense or that a normally passable or good defender is hurt but still playing. Resulting in the same, a hole in the defense.
I will never understand this from Rangers fans, you would have never elected to sit Nelly Cruz in favor of superior defense. It wasn't going to happen, other teams continue to make the same choice after the rangers did too. The mariners knew he was terrible in the outfield, the bat outweighed it. The same as it was for the rangers. Living in TX at the time and since, I have heard ad nauseum that the Cardinals some how stole the series from the Rangers. This is baffling to me, as if game 6 of the 2011 world series is in anyway comparable to game 6 of the 1985 world series. Both of those series did share something in common, you can only blame the other guy so long, then you have to show up and win game 7, neither the cards in 85 of the rangers in 11 could come out and win after an "emotional event" took place the game before.

One Ton Scout II I’m not crying about Nellie, I’m just saying that series will always hurt. I’m more irritated about Darren Oliver coming in to pitch the 11th after Hamilton had just put them up by 2 (again 😭) in the previous half inning. I couldn’t stand the way Oliver nibbled around the plate, and (surprise, surprise) walked the lead off batter.

such a great play off story from about August 2011 on. The cardinals were unbeatable during that time, to the inverse of Atlanta and their epic melt down. While a mirror situation was happening in the AL with Boston and Tampa.
The NLDS was incredible between the Cardinals and the Media darling Phillies. Not an all-star team of every other team was going to beat the phillies that year according to sports writers. you could not write the conclusion better. I recall the tigers and rangers being exciting as well.
then, Game 6 of the WS was an incredible game to follow
