If it were today, they'd get a OBP guy to pinch hit before Yaz. Bob destroyed the inning for them by swinging at the first pitch.

You guys were talking about Joe Morgan like he was just a pretty good player. I know you know he's a HOFer, but he was the NL MVP in 1975 AND 1976. Joe Morgan was not only a great player, but also a great team leader. That's why everyone thought he'd someday be a manager. Anyway, those Reds teams of the mid-70s, even with all their stars, were MORGAN's teams. And, yes, he was a terrible announcer.

Batting helmets weren't mandatory across MLB until the 1971 season and even then I think players who debuted before that were grandfathered and didn't have to wear one.

just found a biography for jim burton
"Pitching in the low minors with guys who would never even have a sniff of the majors, Burton stood out - he was the guy who gave up the World Series-winning hit to Joe Morgan. Burton recalled warming up on the mound in Salem, Virginia, while the public-address announcer gave the crowd that day’s trivia question, “What pitcher in uniform tonight lost the seventh game of the 1975 World Series?”
    "

Darrell Johnson was in his second year managing the Red Sox, he would get fired the following year while the team was 41-45. He ended up in Seattle, then Texas, managing only 5 more years in MLB. He never had another winning season after 1975.

The "Curse of the Bambino" thing started after 1986 I believe. Dan Shaugnessy wrote a book in 1990 that first advanced the theory. In reality, Harry Frazee selling off Ruth and most everyone else from his early championship teams and then the Sox being the last to integrate was more likely the biggest contributing factors.

Cecil Cooper was in the lineup because rookie left fielder, Jim Rice, broke his arm in the final weeks of the season. Both Rice and fellow rookie, center fielder Fred Lynn, were in the running for rookie of the year in 1975, which went to Lynn. Lynn and Rice also finished 1 and 3 respectively in AL MVP voting. I believe that Fred Lynn was the first, possibly only, player in MLB history to win both Rookie of the year AND MVP?

Human interest story: 1975 Reds at San Diego BP. Johnny bench laces a line drive into the shin of a young boy in the first row on the left field line. It sounded like a dropped melon hitting the concrete. That boy was hurt. After a bit, Dave Conception walked over with a ball to check on the kid,and gave him the ball. Jim Burton was a guy who always struggled with his control in the high minors, but mastered it briefly there in 74 and 75 and got his shot.
After this game, he had a terrible spring training the following year, and never got his control back. Might just have been he was never that good, or that the postseason experience broke him a little like it would with Tom Niedenfuer a decade later. He wasn't some phenom - the Sox had him pegged as maybe a back of the rotation guy or potential middle reliever so maybe it was some idea with the matchup that had him on the mound in that situation. Also wasn't game 6 extra innings? Maybe everyone else on the staff was fried.
On his appearance he said it was cold and he hadn't been able to get loose. He was happy with his pitch to Morgan, it would have gotten nearly anyone else out. Morgan himself said it was 'wicked'. Makes you wonder how things would have gone for him later on had he retired Morgan.

YES THE 1975 WORLD SERIES BABBBYYYY!!!, 1975 Baseball was a special time for Cincinnati, Ohio so I can tell you about the Reds: Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan & Tony Perez, THE MAIN FOUR HEROES OF CINCINNATI REDS HISTORY during the 70s and 80s, While Red Sox is Carlton Fisk, Fred Lynn & Jim Rice which are 3 very good players at the time, so this World Series was a special time for both cities. However, Boston Red Sox still had the Curse of the Bambino at this time before this World Series (which was ended in 2004, which was my favorite baseball moment including the Chicago Cubs ending their curse as well in 2016, including for Philadelphia Philles at 2008, which was also a moment I loved as a kid) so I had tons of fun in my life as a baseball fan and I still love baseball ⚾⚾

  • @Paul-os1fr
    @Paul-os1fr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The Denny Doyle thing was even worse than it sounded. He'd hit .310 in the regular season, his best year.
In game 6, he was thrown out at home in what would have been the winning run for the Red Sox at the time, it was a suicidal attempt, no chance of making it. But the 3rd base coach threw him under the bus:
"However, the play, in both execution and final result, was deemed suicidal, and after the contest was over, Doyle was pestered with the proverbial question asked of all losers (even those bound up in the winning cause that was Game Six): Why?
Third base Don Zimmer had said "Go!", Doyle patiently explained. Disingenuously, Zimmer -- who would wind up in the Red Sox Nation's doghouse for helming two superb teams in 1977 and '78 and bringing them in second-best to the hated New York Yankees -- explained that he had said "No!" to Doyle, who he felt was chomping at the bit. But for that play, Game Six would not be remembered for what it was: The greatest game ever played in post-season competition. And for that, we have keystone sacker Denny Doyle to be thankful for, and perhaps also Red Sox Nation villain Don Zimmer, for issuing the command Doyle either misunderstood or didn't on that cold October night-night so long ago."
So it might have partly been that he was in the doghouse for that controversy. There's no other explanation.

I was in Florida playing in the Roy Hobbs World Series, I think in 1997 & we were watching ESPN Classic. They were showing Game 6 of the 1975 Series, I saw that Fisk homerun & it hurt almost as much then as it did in 1975 when I was watching at home with my Dad ! Even though I knew how the series ended up, it still was a soul crusher :) Man, baseball can give you some of the best highs & lows, but great memories all the same. Dad died in 2002, but I will always have that memory :)

should do more BIG series moments
    Mazeroski's walk-off homer (Game 7 in 1960)
Don Larsen's perfect game (Game 5 in 1956)
    Kirk Gibson's walk-off homer (Game 1 in 1988)
    Carlton Fisk's game-winning homer (Game 6 in 1975)
    Reggie Jackson's 3 hr game (Game 6 in 1977)
    Buckner's error (Game 6 in 1986)
    Joe Carter's walk-off homer (Game 6 in 1993)

I think 1980 was the first time they really cracked down on fans charging the field. There were mounted police lining the field. Read Jim Burton’s bio on Sabr.org. It’ll give you some insight on his experience in the World Series.

What happened with Jim Burton is not a deep mystery. "He only played one game after this!?"
Yeah. He played one game in *1977*. He didn't play at ALL in 1976. Obviously, he had a serious injury. He tried a comeback in 1977 and it didn't work out.

Speaking of fans storming onto the field, you gotta do the Series ('77 or '78) with Reggie Jackson weaving through the fans like a linebacker (and bowling over one of them) on his mad rush to the dugout.
